Lawyering Peace

release date: Dec 16, 2021
Lawyering Peace
In all but the rarest circumstances, the world''s deadly conflicts are ended not through outright victory, but through a series of negotiations. Not all of these negotiations, however, yield a durable peace. To successfully mitigate conflict drivers, the parties in conflict must address a number of puzzles, such as whether and how to share and/or re-establish a state''s monopoly of force, reallocate the ownership and management of natural resources, modify the state structure, or provide for a path toward external self-determination. Successfully resolving these puzzles requires the parties to navigate a number of conundrums and make choices and design mechanisms that are appropriate to the particular context of the conflict, and which are most likely to lead to a durable peace. Lawyering Peace aims to help future negotiators build better and more durable peace agreements through a rigorous examination of how other parties have resolved these puzzles and associated conundrums.

Communication in Mechanism Design

release date: Jun 02, 2008
Communication in Mechanism Design
Mechanism design is the field of economics that treats institutions and procedures as variables that can be selected in order to achieve desired objectives. An important aspect of a mechanism is the communication among its participants that it requires, which complements other design features such as incentives and complexity. A calculus-based theory of communication in mechanisms is developed in this book. The value of a calculus-based approach lies in its familiarity as well as the insight into mechanisms that it provides. Results are developed concerning (i) a first order approach to the construction of mechanisms, (ii) the range of mechanisms that can be used to achieve a given objective, as well as (iii) lower bounds on the required communication.

Hanshan Deqing, Wang Fuzhi, and Lin Yunming on Zhuangzi

release date: Mar 18, 2025
Hanshan Deqing, Wang Fuzhi, and Lin Yunming on Zhuangzi
This book provides a glimpse into 17th-century Zhuāngzǐ (莊子; ca. 4th through 3rd century BCE) studies by introducing the works of Hānshān Déqīng (憨山德清; 1546–1623), Wáng Fūzhī (王夫之; 1619–1692), and Lín Yúnmíng (林雲銘; 1628–1697), which give a sense of diverse approaches to Zhuāngzǐ during this period. The three commentators represent three distinct orientations as reflected by their respective roles, with Hānshān Déqīng being a Buddhist monk, Wáng Fūzhī a philosopher, and Lín Yúnmíng a literary critic. Their understanding of "carefree wandering" (逍遙遊) is spelled out, followed by a complete translation of the Péng–bird 鵬 passage through their eyes. The author concludes how this amounts to a conception of human flourishing. This is the first monograph on Zhuāngzǐ studies of any of these three thinkers in English. General readers or specialists of ancient Chinese philosophy can gain insight into how Zhuāngzǐ was read in culturally relevant contexts.

Markets of Paris, 2nd Edition

release date: Apr 10, 2013
Markets of Paris, 2nd Edition
The food scene in Paris has changed dramatically since 2006, whenMarkets of Paris was first published. Yes, the same markets are held in the same locales as always—literally, for centuries—but many have undergone a remarkable transformation led by a young generation of purveyors focused, even more than their predecessors, on local and organic ("bio") produce. Markets of Paris, 2nd Edition revisits and updates the entire market scene in Paris, with new entries, including Virtual Markets and Market Streets, Markets Open on Sunday, Artisan Bakers and Artisan Foods, Getting Along in the Food Markets, Brocante Fairs, and more. Updates focus on the most interesting vendors and most unique and enticing offerings to be found at each locale, including prepared food that can be eaten on the spot. One of the biggest changes in the Paris market scene in recent years has been the spike of interest in organic, reflected in the popularity of the Raspail organic market. Often it''s referred to as "Le Marché Bio," and many claim it''s the crème de la crème of all Paris''s markets. Restaurant listings have been updated, too, with 15 new additions that have been chosen because of their new-generation chefs'' approach to fresh ingredients or their proximity to featured markets. A new section titled If You Have Limited Time directs the visitor to the most interesting markets near his or her accommodations. Finally, the book has been reorganized by arrondissement to be more user friendly, and it has a brand-new look with all new photos and a refreshed, modernized design.

States of Cultivation

release date: Aug 22, 2023
States of Cultivation
The final decades of the Ottoman Empire and the period of the French mandate in Syria and Lebanon coincided with a critical period of transformation in agricultural technologies and administration. Chemical fertilizers and mechanized equipment inspired model farms while government officials and technocratic elites pursued new land tenure, credit-lending, and tax collection policies to maximize revenue. These policies transformed rural communities and environments and were central to projects of reform and colonial control—as well as to resistance of that control. States of Cultivation examines the processes and effects of agrarian transformation over more than a century as Ottoman, Syrian, Lebanese, and French officials grappled with these new technologies, albeit with different end goals. Elizabeth Williams investigates the increasingly fragmented natures produced by these contrasting priorities and the results of their intersection with regional environmental limits. Not only did post–World War I policies realign the economic space of the mandate states, but they shaped an agricultural legacy that continued to impact Syria and Lebanon post-independence. With this book, Williams offers the first comprehensive account of the shared technocratic ideals that animated these policies and the divergent imperial goals that not only reshaped the region''s agrarian institutions, but produced representations of the region with repercussions well beyond the mandate''s end.

Removing Financial Stress for Business Owners
"Removing Financial Stress for Business Owners" is an essential guide that dives into the complexities of financial stress affecting entrepreneurs. The book starts with a personal anecdote about the author, Edward, experiencing repeated calls from a distressed client, highlighting the urgent need for effective financial planning among business owners. The narrative focuses on the overwhelming financial anxieties that plague business owners, such as market fluctuations, tax burdens, and investment uncertainties. It emphasizes the importance of having a clear, goal-focused financial strategy to alleviate stress and improve life quality. The book argues that financial stress is not only a common cause of personal strife, including divorce and health issues, but also a significant barrier to business success. Core Themes and Solutions Goal-Oriented Financial Planning: The first step in reducing financial stress is setting well-defined, actionable goals. This chapter uses analogies to medical practice, emphasizing the malpractice of recommending financial products without understanding the client''s specific needs. Market Timing Myths: It challenges the common but flawed strategy of timing the market, advocating for a steady, long-term investment approach. Insights from financial experts like Jack Bogle underline the benefits of staying invested over trying to predict market highs and lows. Navigating Financial Advice: This section delves into the murky waters of financial advisory services, where conflicts of interest and misinformation can prevail. It provides practical advice on distinguishing between genuine advice and sales-oriented pitches from financial salespeople. Practical Steps for Implementation The book provides a roadmap for business owners to develop a financial plan that aligns with their personal and business aspirations. It encourages readers to: Write down their financial goals to increase accountability and clarity. Understand the true motivations behind their financial decisions using the "so that" technique, which links financial goals with personal values and desired outcomes. Engage with fiduciary advisors who are legally bound to act in the client''s best interest, ensuring advice is free from conflicts of interest. The final chapters advocate for a holistic approach to financial planning, urging business owners to ignore the noise of financial news and focus on long-term strategies tailored to their unique circumstances. The book concludes with an invitation to consult with the author''s firm, providing a pathway for readers to apply the principles discussed and achieve financial serenity. Sex In The Head

release date: Jul 01, 2016
Sex In The Head
In Sex in the Head, Linda Ruth Williams uses psychoanalysis and recent feminist film theory to analyze a network of ideas which link looking with sexuality and difference, in the work of a writer who disavowed, yet covertly enjoyed, the pleasures and power of vision. The book is a departure from the long history of feminist readings of Lawrence, in that it discusses his engagement with theories of the gaze and its cultural forms - cinema, photography, painting and the visual dynamics and metaphors of literary texts - as a way of thinking through gender. It shows him arguing, on the one hand, against the evils of cinema and visual sex, while relishing, through the eyes of women, the moving spectacle of those male bodies which populate the pages of his books. It also questions what it is about the work of such an adamant cinephobe which has made it so thoroughly adaptable for film and television.

In Pursuit of Their Dreams

release date: Jan 01, 2007
In Pursuit of Their Dreams
Jerry Williams'' history of Azorean immigration to the United States offers us valuable insight into the experience and culture of Portuguese immigrants and their descendents. This account fills a major gap in American immigration history and gives us a comprehensive overview of how Portuguese-Americans--now numbering close to a million people--have come to constitute a vibrant and highly visible presence within southeastern New England, the areas around San Francisco and San Diego, Hawaii, and the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. Even though Azorean immigrants all came from similar cultural and social backgrounds, Williams shows how regionally specific opportunity structures and social hierarchies have contributed to significant differences within the Portuguese-American experience. Starting with the whaling routes that first connected the mid-Atlantic archipelago with the ports of call in New England and California in the early 1800s, Williams lays out the complex relationship between the Azores and the US that has continued into the present. We learn how particular patterns of poverty, overpopulation and social inequality in the Azores pushed large numbers of the islands'' inhabitants to leave their homes in search of better opportunities for themselves and their children. He tells the story of how the early whalers who jumped ship in New Bedford, San Francisco, or Hawaii were followed by kin and fellow villagers who had heard of plentiful jobs in New England''s textile mills, gold and land in California, or agricultural work on Hawaiian plantations. Williams'' account allows us to understand the importance of family and community connections throughout the immigrants'' arduous transition from peasant life to industrial society.

Wealth Matters for Your Health

release date: Dec 01, 2024
Wealth Matters for Your Health
"Wealth Matters for Your Health" explores the intricate link between financial prosperity and physical health. Drawing on observations from wealth conferences and the author''s personal experiences, the book showcases how wealthy "corporate athletes" maintain superior health, which significantly boosts their professional effectiveness. The text introduces the concept of the Corporate Athlete, emphasizing that maintaining peak physical health is as crucial for high business performance as it is for sports. It argues that wealth provides access to better health resources, enabling longer, healthier lives. Additionally, it discusses the psychological impacts of financial stress, highlighting how economic security is closely linked with mental health, affecting overall life satisfaction and productivity. Economic Disparities: The book points out that higher income not only correlates with better health outcomes but also with a longer life, underlining the stark disparities in health due to poverty and income inequality. Life Expectancy and Income: It details how life expectancy dramatically varies with income, with higher earners typically living much longer and enjoying better overall health than those on the lower end of the income scale. Access to Healthcare: Wealthier individuals generally have better access to healthcare and can afford healthier lifestyles. In stark contrast, those in lower-income groups often struggle with inadequate health insurance and access to basic healthcare services. Socioeconomic Effects in Childhood: The book also explores how socioeconomic status during childhood can have long-term effects on health and economic outcomes, influencing an individual''s future earning potential and health status. The concluding sections reflect on the health habits of successful CEOs interviewed by the author, emphasizing how these high achievers integrate rigorous health regimes into their daily routines to support their business endeavors. The book promotes a comprehensive approach to improving both financial and physical well-being, advocating for a life that balances economic success with physical health. Investing in Health: The narrative highlights that investing in health can yield substantial financial dividends over time, advocating for health to be seen as an investment rather than an expense. Understanding Economic Impacts: The author calls for a deeper understanding of how economic conditions impact health and suggests that addressing these root causes can lead to improved societal health outcomes. Practical Steps for Improvement: Practical advice is offered to help individuals enhance both their health and financial stability, emphasizing the importance of developing a concrete plan that addresses both aspects concurrently. This guide serves as an educational resource, reflecting the expert insights of Edward Williams, and aims to empower readers to make informed decisions about their health and financial futures.
