Paul R. Williams, Architect

release date: Jan 01, 1993
Paul R. Williams, Architect
One of the most important Los Angeles architects, Paul R. Williams'' prolific career extended from the 1920s to the 1970s. His vast body of built work stretches across the world from Paris and Colombia to Washington, D.C., New York, and Memphis. However, the Los Angeles area was his personal and professional focus. Overcoming incredible prejudice in an all-white field, Williams became the first African American admitted to the A.I.A and designed over 3,000 projects, including the Jetsons-like theme building at Los Angeles International Airport, Saks Fifth Avenue and W. & J. Sloane''s department stores in Beverly Hills, the famous Beverly Hills and Ambassador hotels, and renowned celebrity haunts, such as Chasen''s and Perino''s restaurants. He also designed mansions for Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Tyrone Power, William "Bojangles" Robinson, Lon Chaney, and other entertainers. While Williams had extraordinary facility with the historical styles popular in southern California at the time, he was equally adept at modern design, as seen in his work for Fisk and Howard universities, Saint Jude Hospital in Memphis, and several banks, churches, and country clubs. Karen E. Hudson, a third-generation Angeleno, is the granddaughter of Paul R. Williams and director of his archives. She chronicles the African-American experience in Los Angeles in writings and photographs. David Gebhard, the renowned historian, was a professor of architectural history and Curator of the Architectural Drawing Collection of the Art Museum at the University of Santa Barbara. Call-out: The first architectural monograph of Williams'' extraordinary and inspiring achievements.

Celebrating Life Customs around the World
This book documents hundreds of customs and traditions practiced in countries outside of the United States, showcasing the diversity of birth, coming-of-age, and death celebrations worldwide. From the beginning of our lives to the end, all of humanity celebrates life''s milestones through traditions and unique customs. In the United States, we have specific events like baby showers, rites of passage such as Bat and Bar Mitzvahs and "sweet 16" birthday parties, and sober end-of-life traditions like obituaries and funeral services that honor those who have died. But what kinds of customs and traditions are practiced in other countries? How do people in other cultures welcome babies, prepare to enter into adulthood, and commemorate the end of the lives of loved ones? This three-volume encyclopedia covers more than 300 birth, life, and death customs, with the books'' content organized chronologically by life stage. Volume 1 focuses on birth and childhood customs, Volume 2 documents adolescent and early-adulthood customs, and Volume 3 looks at aging and death customs. The entries in the first volume examine pre-birth traditions, such as baby showers and other gift-giving events, and post-birth customs, such as naming ceremonies, child-rearing practices, and traditions performed to ward off evil or promote good health. The second volume contains information about rites of passage as children become adults, including indigenous initiations, marriage customs, and religious ceremonies. The final volume concludes with coverage on customs associated with aging and death, such as retirement celebrations, elaborate funeral processions, and the creation of fantasy coffins. The set features beautiful color inserts that illustrate examples of celebrations and ceremonies and includes an appendix of excerpts from primary documents that include legislation on government-accepted names, wedding vows, and maternity/paternity leave regulations.

Hegel's Ethics of Recognition

release date: Feb 10, 1998
Hegel's Ethics of Recognition
In this significant contribution to Hegel scholarship, Robert Williams develops the most comprehensive account to date of Hegel''s concept of recognition (Anerkennung). Fichte introduced the concept of recognition as a presupposition of both Rousseau''s social contract and Kant''s ethics. Williams shows that Hegel appropriated the concept of recognition as the general pattern of his concept of ethical life, breaking with natural law theory yet incorporating the Aristotelian view that rights and virtues are possible only within a certain kind of community. He explores Hegel''s intersubjective concept of spirit (Geist) as the product of affirmative mutual recognition and his conception of recognition as the right to have rights. Examining Hegel''s Jena manuscripts, his Philosophy of Right, the Phenomenology of Spirit, and other works, Williams shows how the concept of recognition shapes and illumines Hegel''s understandings of crime and punishment, morality, the family, the state, sovereignty, international relations, and war. A concluding chapter on the reception and reworking of the concept of recognition by contemporary thinkers including Derrida, Levinas, and Deleuze demonstrates Hegel''s continuing centrality to the philosophical concerns of our age.

Muhammad and the Supernatural

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Muhammad and the Supernatural
Using four key events in the life of Muhammad to exemplify themes that were important to medieval Islamic civilization, this book examines: the story of Muhammad''s conception; his first public preaching and his alleged choice of ''Alī as his successor; the account of a warning sent by one of Muhammad''s companions to the Meccans of his impending attack; and the failed assassination attempt of two Arab tribesmen who are later killed by God. These stories are used to illustrate the themes of sex, politics, betrayal, and wrath respectively. Examining these events through literary analysis of two genres, prophetic biography (sīra) and Qur''ān exegesis (tafsīr), and employing a comparison between the works of al-Tabarī and Ibn Kathīr, Rebecca Williams demonstrates that both al-Tabarī and Ibn Kathīr used the supernatural to propagate their own interpretation of certain events that were intimately connected to the controversies of their own cultural milieu. Approaching the element of the supernatural in the life of Muhammad from a fresh perspective by convincingly arguing that its presence was vital to the men who included it in their works, despite the Qur''ān''s insistence that Muhammad performed no miracles, this accessible book will be of interest not only to those in the field of Islamic Studies but will also be useful for students of folklore and classical literature.

Goethe's Faust

release date: Jan 30, 2020
Goethe's Faust
Originally published in 1987, this is a thorough and lucid introduction and commentary to the whole of Goethe’s Faust. It gives the student of German and European literature valuable insights into the most important work of Germany’s foremost poet. German quotations are translated or paraphrased in English and a detailed knowledge of German literature is not assumed. The book traces Goethe’s work on the play over 60 years of his creative career and surveys its critical reception over the 200 years since its first appearance. Part One is analysed as a mimetic tragedy, Part Two as an historical and cultural profile of Goethe’s own times. The commentary guides the reader carefully through its subtleties and multi-layered references and provides a broad and coherent structure for the overall understanding of the work. It suggests provocative interpretations of some figures and episodes in Part Two and places renewed emphasis on parts of the work that often receive relatively little attention. An appendix surveys the metres and verse forms of the play.

The Parent-Centered Early School

release date: Nov 26, 2013
The Parent-Centered Early School
This case study of a small independent parent-run program in Milwaukee''s inner city, finds that several factors combine to make the school effective: parental involvement at all levels including governance; a clear and shared sense of mission; and a coherent Montessori curriculum that takes children from preschool through the third grade. The study employed data from several surveys of parents, teachers, interviews with participants, and observation over five years. Begun twenty-seven years ago by parents and community members alienated from dysfunctional public schools and still supported mostly by contributions, Highland today is one of only a dozen schools in the United States receiving some of its revenue under a voucher program that provides state funds to independent schools. After an overview of Highland''s history, demographics, and measures of success, two chapters examine the school''s commitment to diversity, nonviolence, child nurturance, and egalitarianism. Other chapters focus on how Highland involves its parents and how parents alone govern the school, analyze the role of Highland''s trustees, and details the school''s Montessori curriculum. The final chapter explores the possibility of applying some of Highland''s lessons to public school curriculums.

The Mayor of Casterbridge

Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ...rendered him less desirable as a husband than she had at first thought him to be.'' ''I cannot answer, '' said Elizabeth-Jane thoughtfully. ''It is so difficult. It wants a Pope to settle that '' ''You prefer not to, perhaps?'' Lucetta showed in her appealing tone how much she leant on Elizabeth''s judgment. ''Yes, Miss Templeman, '' admitted Elizabeth. ''I would rather not say.'' Nevertheless, Lucetta seemed relieved by the simple fact of having opened out the situation a little, and was slowly convalescent of her headache. ''Bring me a looking-glass. How do I appear to people?'' she said languidly. ''Well--a little worn, '' answered Elizabeth, eyeing her as a critic eyes a doubtful painting; fetching the glass she enabled Lucetta to survey herself in it, which Lucetta anxiously did. ''I wonder if I wear well, as times go '' she observed after a while. ''Yes--fairly. ''Where am I worst?'' ''Under your eyes--I notice a little brownness there.'' ''Yes. That is my worst place, I know. How many years more do you think I shall last before I get hopelessly plain?'' There was something curious in the way in which Elizabeth, though the younger, had come to play the part of experienced sage in these discussions. ''It may be five years, '' she said judicially. ''Or, with a quiet life, as many as ten. With no love you might calculate on ten.'' Lucetta seemed to reflect on this as on an unalterable, impartial verdict. She told Elizabeth-Jane no more of the past attachment she had roughly adumbrated as the experiences of a third person; and Elizabeth, who in spite of her philosophy was very tender-hearted, wept that night in bed at the thought that her pretty, rich Lucetta did not treat her to the full confidence of names and dates in her confessions. For by the ''she'' of Lucetta''s story...
