Fall of the Double Eagle

release date: Dec 01, 2015
Fall of the Double Eagle
Despite the renewed interest in the First World War, the opening campaigns that decided the course of the global conflict remain under-examined; this is especially true for the Battle for Galicia in August 1914. Not only was Galicia, a historical region located in today''s southern Poland and western Ukraine, the site of the bloodiest battle of the conflict, but the impulses that precipitated the engagement and the unprecedented carnage that resulted also effectively doomed the Austria-Hungarian Empire just six weeks into the war. In "The Fall of the Double Eagle," John R. Schindler draws on extensive archival research, memoirs, and diverse secondary sources in a dozen languages to explain how Austria-Hungary, despite military weakness and the inevitable consequences, consciously chose war in 1914. Through close examination of the Austro-Hungarian military, especially its elite General Staff, Schindler shows how even a war Vienna would likely lose appeared a preferable option to the "foul peace" the top generals loathed. The study considers how the polyglot empire was outgunned and unable to subdue Serbia, resulting in a humiliating defeat that generals sought to cover up. Worse was to come, when Austro-Hungarian divisions launched an offensive into Russian Poland in hopes of defeating the numerically superior enemy. By the time the Russians were halted at the gates of Cracow, over 400,000 Austro-Hungarian troops had been lost in just three weeks, a figure equal to the prewar standing army and a loss from which the empire would never recover. While Austria-Hungary''s ultimate defeat and dissolution was postponed until the autumn of 1918, its fate was preordained in in the late summer of 1914 on the plains and hills of Galicia.

Isonzo

release date: Apr 30, 2001
Isonzo
This is the first account in English of a much-overlooked, but important, First World War battlefront located in the mountains astride the border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Not well known in the West, the battles of Isonzo were nevertheless ferocious, and compiled a record of bloodletting that totaled over 1.75 million for both sides. In sharp contrast to claims that neither the Italian nor the Austrian armies were viable fighting forces, Schindler aims to bring the terrible sacrifices endured by both armies back to their rightful place in the history of 20th century Europe. The Habsburg Empire, he contends, lost the war for military and economic reasons rather than for political or ethnic ones. Schindler''s account includes references to remarkable personalities such as Mussolini; Tito; Hemingway; Rommel, and the great maestro Toscanini. This Alpine war had profound historical consequences that included the creation of the Yugoslav state, the problem of a rump Austrian state looking to Germany for leadership, and the traumatic effects on a generation of young Italian men who swelled the ranks of the fascists. After nearly a century, Isonzo can assume its proper place in the ranks of the tragic Great War clashes, alongside Verdun, the Somme, and Passchendaele.

A Primer for Chiral Perturbation Theory

release date: Oct 02, 2011
A Primer for Chiral Perturbation Theory
Chiral Perturbation Theory, as effective field theory, is a commonly accepted and well established working tool, approximating quantum chromodynamics at energies well below typical hadron masses. This volume, based on a number of lectures and supplemented with additional material, provides a pedagogical introduction for graduate students and newcomers entering the field from related areas of nuclear and particle physics. Starting with the the Lagrangian of the strong interactions and general symmetry principles, the basic concepts of Chiral Perturbation Theory in the mesonic and baryonic sectors are developed. The application of these concepts is then illustrated with a number of examples. A large number of exercises (81, with complete solutions) are included to familiarize the reader with helpful calculational techniques.

The Terrorist Perspectives Project

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Terrorist Perspectives Project
This timely book synthesizes the perspectives of Osama bin Laden and his fellow Salafi jihadists on how to wage war on their many enemies. A team of experts from the Institute for Defense Analyses working on the Terrorist Perspectives Project undertook the study in order to help U.S. military and civilian policymakers, planners, and educators better understand terrorists. In assembling strategic and operational perspectives of Al Qaida and Associated Movements (AQAM), they focused on the Salafi jihadists'' intellectual leadership and a sampling of their followers, who together comprise the vanguard of the global jihad and share a common enemy-the United States. This project is sponsored by the United States Joint Forces Command.

Germinal Centers in Immune Responses

Germinal Centers in Immune Responses
In the last few years the study of germinal centers of the lymphoid tissue has progressed at an accelerated pace. Questions about their role and their significance in immune responses that could not be answered, mainly because of tedmicallimitations, are presently approached experimentally from many different directions. Hypotheses, some more than half a century old, receive renewed attention. At this time, members of the Biology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S.A., and of the Institute of Pathology, University of Bern, Switzerland, decided to bring together workers interested in the field. The Conference was held in Bern, June 22-24, 1966, and included fifty-seven contributions which were discussed at length. The range of interest extended from phylogenesis and anatomy to studies on cell proliferation, immunohistochemistry, cancer research and radiobiology. The aim of this broad coverage was to combine all available information on the role of germinal centers in immune responses in a single package, instead of leaving it scattered around in reports dealing with divergent immunological problems. This attempt is reflected in the present book. A rather large space has been devoted to the lively discussions which followed the reports, the volume of most of which had been voluntarily limited. The discussions are not reported verbatim but care has been taken to insure neutrality and objectivity in the necessary adaptation of the shortened transcription. We have been very fortunate indeed, to have Drs.

"Pianos in the Woods"

"Pianos in the Woods"
In this emphatically skeptical poem, Emily Dickinson squarely connects with one of the central issues of romantic and modern literature: the individual''s alienation from the world in which he lives. This ontological separation had its origins in modern thought in the philosophy of Descartes and Hobbes, and was invested with scientific certainty by the revelation of Newtonian physics. Materialism gave way to mechanism, and the universe was reduced to substance and motion; it was emptied of purpose and value, and was thus seen as separate from the vital world of private experience. Inheritors of this world-view, the Romantics turned to the unifying force of the imagination. Through the power of imaginative vision, they sought to heal the breach between subject and object, and find a meaningful connection between man and the universe.

Oxygen Precipitation Studies at Various Impurity Levels Using Thermal Donor Activation
Thermal donor activation and related intrinsic pn-junctions are used to characterize outdiffusion and precipitation of oxygen in silicon wafers. It is found that the depth of the p-layers and the depth of the denuded zones do not coincide. Both are found to depend on the wafer position within the crystal and are not solely related to the oxygen content.

An Intrinsic Gettering Process to Improve Minority Carrier Lifetimes in Mos and Bipolar Silicon Epitaxial Technology
Improvements in silicon epitaxial layer lifetime for CMOS P on P+ and N on N+ as well as bipolar N on P-epi technologies have been observed through the application of a four-step pre-epitaxial heat treatment to activate the intrinsic gettering mechanism in the substrate wafer prior to CVD epitaxial growth. Denuded zones 15 to 70 microns deep with bulk internal gettering sites were achieved and epilayer surface shallow etch pits were not detected on the gettered epi-wafers. Minority carrier lifetime (?) on gettered epi-wafers showed an improvement in ? by as much as three orders of magnitude.
