Taking [A]part

release date: Jul 02, 2024
Taking [A]part
A critical inquiry into the value and experience of participation in design research. In Taking [A]part, John McCarthy and Peter Wright consider a series of boundary-pushing research projects in human-computer interaction (HCI) in which the design of digital technology is used to inquire into participative experience. McCarthy and Wright view all of these projects—which range from the public and performative to the private and interpersonal—through the critical lens of participation. Taking participation, in all its variety, as the generative and critical concept allows them to examine the projects as a part of a coherent, responsive movement, allied with other emerging movements in DIY culture and participatory art. Their investigation leads them to rethink such traditional HCI categories as designer and user, maker and developer, researcher and participant, characterizing these relationships instead as mutually responsive and dialogical. McCarthy and Wright explore four genres of participation—understanding the other, building relationships, belonging in community, and participating in publics—and they examine participatory projects that exemplify each genre. These include the Humanaquarium, a participatory musical performance; the Personhood project, in which a researcher and a couple explored the experience of living with dementia; the Prayer Companion project, which developed a technology to inform the prayer life of cloistered nuns; and the development of social media to support participatory publics in settings that range from reality game show fans to on-line deliberative democracies.

Tales and Tails of a Yorkshire Vet

release date: May 01, 2023
Tales and Tails of a Yorkshire Vet
The UK''s best-loved vet looks back at the funniest, most absurd or heart-breaking animal encounters and situations he has been in over his long and highly successful career. "My mentor and former boss Alf Wight said that the life of a vet is never dull and how true he was. It is funny looking back that he found fame through his James Herriot books, and now his former surgery and myself have been taken to the nation''s heart once again through our show The Yorkshire Vet. "It just shows what a nation of animal lovers we are and these past few years have been particularly challenging for all of us with the Coronavirus outbreak. But what it has shown me is the comfort and support our pets give us in times like these. All the same, it was this, along with recent changes to my working life that gave me an opportunity to reflect, so I want to look back at some of my favourite cases and share them with you."

Experience-Centered Design

release date: May 31, 2022
Experience-Centered Design
Experience-centered design, experience-based design, experience design, designing for experience, user experience design. All of these terms have emerged and gained acceptance in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interaction Design relatively recently. In this book, we set out our understanding of experience-centered design as a humanistic approach to designing digital technologies and media that enhance lived experience. The book is divided into three sections. In Section 1, we outline the historical origins and basic concepts that led into and flow out from our understanding of experience as the heart of people''s interactions with digital technology. In Section 2, we describe three examples of experience-centered projects and use them to illustrate and explain our dialogical approach. In Section 3, we recapitulate some of the main ideas and themes of the book and discuss the potential of experience-centered design to continue the humanist agenda by giving a voice to those who might otherwise be excluded from design and by creating opportunities for people to enrich their lived experience with and through technology. Table of Contents: How Did We Get Here? / Some Key Ideas Behind Experience-Centered Design / Making Sense of Experience in Experience-Centered Design / Experience-Centered Design as Dialogue / What do We Mean by Dialogue? / Valuing Experience-Centered Design / Where Do We Go from Here?

Listening After Nature

release date: May 05, 2022
Listening After Nature
Listening After Nature examines the constructions and erasures that haunt field recording practice and discourse. Analyzing archival and contemporary soundworks through a combination of post-colonial, ecological and sound studies scholarship, Mark Peter Wright recodes the Field; troubles conceptions of Nature; expands site-specificity; and unearths hidden technocultures. What exists beyond the signal? How is agency performed and negotiated between humans and nonhumans? What exactly is a field recording and what are its pedagogical potentials? These questions are operated by a methodology of listening that incorporates the spaces of audition, as well as Wright''s own practice-based reflections. In doing so, Listening After Nature posits a range of novel interventions. One example is the “Noisy-Nonself,” a conceptual figuration with which to comprehend the presence of reticent recordists. “Contact Zones and Elsewhere Fields” offers another unique contribution by reimagining the relationship between the field and studio. In the final chapter, Wright explores the microphone by tracing its critical and creative connections to natural resource extraction and contemporary practice. Listening After Nature auditions water and waste, infrastructures and animals, technologies and recordists, data and stars. It grapples with the thresholds of sensory perception and anchors itself to the question: what am I not hearing? In doing so, it challenges Western universalisms that code the field whilst offering vibrant practice-based possibilities.

Hue and Cry

release date: Mar 26, 2020
Hue and Cry
"Hue and Cry" is a dramatization of the prosecution in 1807 of Aaron Burr for treason, at which U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall presided. This event was for the 1800''s the "Trial of the Century," equivalent in notoriety to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial a century later. In the years following his famous duel with Alexander Hamilton, Burr traveled to the West and recruited men for an expedition of a mysterious nature. He was charged with everything from "filibustering" - private invasion of a foreign power without federal authority - to aiming at the overthrow of the U.S. government and the execution of President Thomas Jefferson. Historians differ in their conclusions about what crimes. if any, he may have hoped to set in motion.

Chivalry

release date: Feb 28, 2019
Chivalry
The importance of chivalry is taught to little girls and boys from the start, outlining for them the various rules of male obligation that will guide sexual relations throughout their lifetimes; i.e., males are here to protect and provide for women. The victories of legendary cinematic heroes whose brave deeds are rounded with applause and happily-ever-afters appears to seal the fate of chivalry as the future path of every man. Those few who do pause to question chivalry''s values however - its rote expectation of male sacrifice, possibility of danger or injury, impacts on mental health, potential for exploitation and abuse, or the question of valid compensations for ongoing sacrifices - may conclude that it serves as a poor life map, or worse that it amounts to a malignant and toxic form of masculinity. This book examines the realities of chivalry beyond the usual platitudes to see what''s really at stake for men. The essays, written by men''s advocates Peter Wright and Paul Elam, survey the roots of the chivalric tradition and examine real life examples of chivalry in action.

The Politics Of Disability: A Guide for Men

release date: Mar 26, 2018
The Politics Of Disability: A Guide for Men
In recent years the disability sector has seen the rise of political ideologies directing the provision of services and supports to disabled persons; Marxist, radical feminist, and social justice extremism being the more obvious among them. Such imposed frameworks have important implications for the quality of care received by service users, and to whom services might be tailored, though few academics have acknowledged their impact on men with disabilities. As described in the following pages the negative impact of such ideologies is disproportionally borne by male service users whose experiences and needs are often neglected. The authors describe some of the more problematic issues and offer positive suggestions for men to both identify and hopefully navigate their way around these biases. The first chapter by Hanna Wallen looks at recent feminist advocacy for people with disabilities, which amounts to a gendering of what are essentially genderless issues. The result of such gendering is to exclude men from important service considerations, creating a selective practice that amounts to an attack on men’s civil rights. The subsequent three chapters by Peter Wright were first published in 2015 at the Men''s Mental Health Network which have been updated for this volume. These essays explore the experience of men with disabilities living in a world that often fails to meet reasonable expectations, particularly in areas of provision of care, and protections against violence and abuse. The articles discuss possible reasons for these failures, in particular the creep of gynocentric attitudes in the disability sector, while offering positive encouragement for men to self-advocate, where possible, in their own best interest.

Feminism

release date: Feb 10, 2018
Feminism
Modeled on the principles of feudal society, the feminist enterprise of designing male and female social classes has been several centuries in the making. Well before Marx and Marxism the feminist tradition was orchestrating its own version of the long march through the institutions of society, agitating for social and legal changes that would ultimately free women of most responsibilities while leaving men''s responsibilities unchanged or increased. Peter Wright explores the nature of political feminism and the rhetorical devices that have proven so decisive for the success of the movement. Among those tactics are appeals to women''s biological vulnerabilities and the necessity of male chivalry to secure women''s protections and rise in status.

A Brief History of The Men’s Rights Movement

release date: Jul 07, 2017
A Brief History of The Men’s Rights Movement
The Men’s Rights Movement consists of groups or individuals fighting for improved human rights for men. The movement is sometimes referred to as the Men’s Human Rights Movement (MHRM), with human rights serving as a central focus that encompasses the same rights called civil liberties or civil rights but also including those rights that are not encoded in law - such as compassionate and respectful behavior toward men and indeed toward all human beings. The purpose of the movement has occasionally been misunderstood, this partly because it has been poorly documented. To correct that oversight this book attempts to provide a brief overview of both the historical beginnings and goals of the movement over the last 150 years. A historical survey reveals that the MRM is concerned with a large array of issues impacting men and boys such as alimony, genital mutilation of male infants, male homelessness, mental illness, false accusations, family court bias, suicide, child custody, low funding for male health issues, educational performance, and misandry in mainstream culture just to name a few. The following pages provide examples of the early MRM in action, focusing in Parts 1 – 3 on the rise of men’s advocacy in the 1800s. Part four provides a sample list of men’s rights initiatives from the 1800s to recent times, and Part five provides a few personal and co-authored essays penned between the years 2012 – 2017 that give a taste of contemporary thinking, with the concluding essay by Robert Brockway giving a general overview of concerns of the modern MRM. With the publication of this material in one volume it is hoped that the historical footprint of the MRM will be set straight.

Putting a Different Spin On It

Putting a Different Spin On It
I began coaching Cricket formally in 1992, yet at the time I merely tutored players in the technicalities that I knew and with the love and the passion that I had for the Game. Soon however, my burning interest in sports and performance psychology rather took over and I became very much a maverick coach, working with players of all ages, yet from an alternative and somewhat Left-field perspective. Along the way I have experienced some very interesting and off-the-wall happenings in the course of my coaching. ""Putting a Different Spin on it"" is a collected Casebook of those encounters along the less-travelled road of Coaching Cricket from an Alternative Perspective.

My Reunion with Love and Innocence

release date: Mar 04, 2017
My Reunion with Love and Innocence
This is the author''s story of profound personal change that took place across a period of eight momentous weeks in the autumn of 2016. Peter describes the build-up to this period thus: ""In September I knew that I was very much at a crossroads, a decisive point, particularly with my career and activity choices going forward. I could have gone on a holiday, perhaps a cruise around the world, to seek some clarity; yet still return and be no further forward. So it was that I found myself making arrangements with a very good friend to visit her for a day of intensive one-to-one personal and business development coaching."" Whilst the business activities were addressed with anticipation and enthusiasm, it was the personal elements of their working together that caused Peter to now view his coach, his good friend, more as his Guide in spirit. What happened next unfolds as an Odyssey of personal transformation that he was not quite expecting or was prepared for.

India During the Second World War

release date: Aug 19, 2016
India During the Second World War
This publication comprises four articles originally published by the (British) Army Bureau of Current Affairs between 1942 and 1945. These provide a fascinating insight into how India was viewed during the Second World War by at least part of the British establishment. The political situation at the time, particularly the drive for independence, is discussed, as well as the country''s economic and social conditions. Not unnaturally, India''s position in relation to the war is also covered, with one article being entirely devoted to the Indian Army, its structure and composition. "India is a far-off country, but it is one which occupies a vital position in our war effort. Not only has it become a bastion against the westward advance of Japanese aggression, it has become a test of the sincerity of our claims to be fighting this war for the freedom of mankind. In India the armed forces of the United Nations - America, Britain and India herself - combine to resist the common enemy of civilisation in the east. In India I had the high honour of placing before the leaders of that great country the British Government''s far-reaching offer of freedom and self-government." - Stafford Cripps. CONTENTS "India Faces Total War" by Colonel D. H. Cole "My Mission to India" by Sir Stafford Cripps "The Indian Army" by An Indian Army Officer "Indian Background" by Captain Peter Wright The cover features the post-independence flag of India because although independence was not finally achieved until 1947 the Second World War was the immediate prelude to it. In the centre is a picture of men from the 4th Indian Division holding a captured German flag in North Africa.

Wrights & Wrongs

release date: Jun 23, 2016
Wrights & Wrongs
Peter Wright has been a dancer, choreographer, teacher, producer and director in the theatre as well as in television for over 70 years. In Wrights & Wrongs, Peter offers his often surprising views of today''s dance world, lessons learned – and yet to learn – from a lifetime''s experience of ballet, commercial theatre and television. Peter started his career in wartime, with the Kurt Jooss company. He has worked with such greats as Pina Bausch, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Marcia Haydée, Richard Cragun, Monica mason, Karen Kain, Miyako Yoshida and Carlos Acosta - as well as today''s generation of starts including Alina Cajocaru, Marianela Nunez, Natalia Osipova and Lauren Cuthbertson. While now regarded as part of the British ballet establishment, for many years Peter developed his career outside London, particularly in Germany with John Cranko''s Stuttgart Ballet. That distance gives him a unique and unrivalled view on ballet companies. His close association with choreographers Frederick Ashton, Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan and David Bintley gives Peter an authoritative perspective on British ballet. Wrights and Wrongs includes black-and-white photographs from Wright''s career, and as Exeunt magazine comments: ''Anyone with an interest in British ballet will find plenty to occupy them in Wright''s book... the many dramas and delights of his life in dance spring forth from the page with brio.''

Deception In The Marketplace

release date: Dec 22, 2015
Deception In The Marketplace
This is the first scholarly book to fully address the topics of the psychology of deceptive persuasion in the marketplace and consumer self-protection. Deception permeates the American marketplace. Deceptive marketing harms consumers’ health, welfare and financial resources, reduces people’s privacy and self-esteem, and ultimately undermines trust in society. Individual consumers must try to protect themselves from marketers’ misleading communications by acquiring personal marketplace deception-protection skills that go beyond reliance on legal or regulatory protections. Understanding the psychology of deceptive persuasion and consumer self-protection should be a central goal for future consumer behavior research. The authors explore these questions. What makes persuasive communications misleading and deceptive? How do marketing managers decide to prevent or practice deception in planning their campaigns? What skills must consumers acquire to effectively cope with marketers’ deception tactics? What does research tell us about how people detect, neutralize and resist misleading persuasion attempts? What does research suggest about how to teach marketplace deception protection skills to adolescents and adults? Chapters cover theoretical perspectives on deceptive persuasion; different types of deception tactics; how deception-minded marketers think; prior research on how people cope with deceptiveness; the nature of marketplace deception protection skills; how people develop deception protection skills in adolescence and adulthood; prior research on teaching consumers marketplace deception protection skills; and societal issues such as regulatory frontiers, societal trust, and consumer education practices. This unique book is intended for scholars and researchers. It should be essential reading for upper level and graduate courses in consumer behavior, social psychology, communication, and marketing. Marketing practitioners and marketplace regulators will find it stimulating and authoritative, as will social scientists and educators who are concerned with consumer welfare.

The Cactus Approach - Building blocks for invincible teams

The Cactus Approach - Building blocks for invincible teams
After nearly sixty years of participating in team and group activities and about half that time spent in coaching and studying the functionality of teams, I feel I''ve come to a conclusive level of understanding about what makes one team work better than another. Yet this all started as an investigation. Starting with the big question - why do some teams look great on paper yet come up short in the reality of performance? For with all great teams, they are always greater than the sum of the skills and attributes of their individual members. Is it mere chemistry - or is there something far more tangible, and therefore accessible, going on? Is it the vision and personalities of the leaders, coaches, mentors and managers - or is there a formula, a template? My conclusion was the six elements that make up the acronym CACTUS, and in this book those elements are explained and explored.

Mind How You Play
No matter what age we are, or what ability we have, or what level we play at - in sport we all encounter the same kinds of inner pressures, and our reactions all follow the same kinds of pathways. Unlike Forrest Gump and ping pong, we all suffer from the things that don''t come easy to us. These complications seem to make our game much harder to play at times. However, virtually all these complications can be traced back to what golfing legend Bobby Jones once described as ""The 6 inch playing field between our ears."" Mind How You Play sets us on a journey - a fascinating search for the real gold of mastering a consistent approach to sporting excellence by gaining an understanding of ourselves. This book will enable you to change your perspectives about your sporting practice and performance, and through that change your way of being in your game!
