Peter 2.0
The incredible book behind the primetime Channel 4 documentary, Peter: The Human Cyborg ''A remarkable account of what it means to be human and what technology can really achieve'' Sunday Telegraph ''Peter''s story is one of the most extraordinary you will ever hear. I urge people to read it'' Stephen Fry ''A remarkable story . . . you''re left desperate to take nothing for granted'' Radio Times __________ Peter, a brilliant scientist, is told that he will lose everything he loves. His husband. His family. His friends. His ability to travel the world. All will be gone. But Peter will not give up. He vows that this will not be the end and instead seeks a completely new beginning . . . Peter has Motor Neurone Disease, a condition universally considered by doctors to be terminal. He is told it will destroy his nerve cells and that within about two years, it will take his life too. But, face-to-face with death, he decides there is another way. Using his background in science and technology, he navigates a new path, one that will enable him not just to survive, but to thrive. The Boy Who Came Walking Home

release date: Jun 01, 2003
The Boy Who Came Walking Home
Author Peter Scott presents a prequel to his popular Something in the Water in a panoramic portrait of an extended Maine island family at the onset of World War I. The Boy Who Came Walking Home is a vivid depiction of a close-knit island society — its morals, bigotry, family strength, and compelling hold on its residents. In particular, it is the story of young Henry Coombs, who abruptly leaves this hardscrabble fishing community to join the army. Within the context of Henry''s journey, the reader learns fascinating details about life in a military encampment, the war''s effect on the Maine home front, and the devastation of the 1918 influenza epidemic. Scott''s gift for period detail, subtle humor, and fully dimensional characters makes this an engrossing and haunting novel.

Lost Crusade

release date: Jul 15, 2014
Lost Crusade
When Peter Scott began a 1968 tour in Vietnam advising ethnic Cambodian Khmer Krom paramilitaries, they shared only an earnest desire to check the spread of communism. It took nearly thirty years and a chance reunion for Scott to realize just how much they had become a part of him. This fascinating chronicle of Scott’s experiences with the secret army of brave, disciplined warriors is by far the most moving and richly detailed account ever published of the deep bonds forged in war between Americans and our Asian allies. Successfully blending intense combat narrative and stirring emotional drama, Scott vividly captures both the unique village culture of a little-known, highly spiritual people and their complex relationship with Special Forces soldiers, who found it increasingly difficult to match their charges’ commitment to the costly conflict. With a novelist’s powers of description and reflection and a professional soldier’s keen insight and analysis, Scott raises the standard for literature about the Vietnam War with this searing portrait of promise and betrayal. Building on his experiences as a Phoenix Program adviser near the Cambodian border, extensive interviews with Khmer Krom survivors, hundreds of hours of research in government archives, and requests for Freedom of Information Act disclosures, Scott seamlessly reconstructs the six-thousand-strong mercenary force’s final crusade against communism, beginning in their ancestral home in 1970 and ending on the U.S. West Coast in 1995. Such a hauntingly evocative and highly readable book will both entertain and shock, and it is assured of a place among the classics on Vietnam.

Physiology and Behaviour of Plants

release date: Apr 29, 2013
Physiology and Behaviour of Plants
Physiology and Behaviour of Plants looks at plants and how they sense and respond to their environment. It takes the traditional plant physiology book into a new dimension by demonstrating how the biochemical observations underlie the behaviour of the plant. In many ways the book parallels courses studied at university on animal physiology and behaviour. The plant has to meet the same challenges as an animal to survive, but overcomes these challenges in very different ways. Students learn to think of plants not only as dynamic organisms, but aggressive, territorial organisms capable of long-range communication. Hallmark features include: Based on a successful course that the author has run for several years at Sussex University, UK Relates plant biochemistry to plant function Printed in four colour throughout Includes a wealth of illustrations and photographs that engages the reader''s attention and reinforce key concepts explored within the text Presents material in a modern ''topic'' based approach, with many relevant and exciting examples to inspire the student An accompanying web site will include teaching supplements This innovative textbook is the ultimate resource for all students in biology, horticulture, forestry and agriculture. The Art of Peter Scott

release date: Jan 01, 1992

The Making of the Modern British Home

release date: Aug 29, 2013
The Making of the Modern British Home
The Making of the Modern British Home explores the impact of the modern suburban semi-detached house on British family life during the 1920s and 1930s - focusing primarily on working-class households who moved from cramped inner-urban accommodation to new suburban council or owner-occupied housing estates. Migration to suburbia is shown to have initiated a dramatic transformation in lifestyles - from a `traditional'' working-class mode of living, based around long-established tightly-knit urban communities, to a recognisably `modern'' mode, centred around the home, the nuclear family, and building a better future for the next generation. This process had far-reaching impacts on family life, entailing a change in household priorities to meet the higher costs of suburban living, which in turn impacted on many aspects of household behaviour, including family size. This volume also constitutes a general history of the development of both owner-occupied and municipal suburban housing estates in interwar Britain, including the evolution of housing policy; the housing development process; housing and estate design, lay-outs, and architectural features; marketing owner-occupation and consumer durables to a mass market; furnishing the new suburban home; making ends meet; suburban gardens; social filtering and conflict on the new estates; and problems of ''mis-selling'' and ''Jerry building''. Peter Scott integrates the social history of the interwar suburbs with their economic, business, marketing, and architectural/planning histories, demonstrating how these elements interacted to produce a new model of working-class lifestyles and ''respectability'' which marked a fundamental break with pre-1914 working-class urban communities.

Iran Contra-Connection

release date: Jan 01, 1987
Iran Contra-Connection
This explosive book lays bare the personalities and institutional relations behind the headlines. It goes beyond the recent events to discern the roots of contemporary U.S. covert activity within the past two decades. The Iran-Contra Connection delves in to the details of CIA and extra-CIA operations, including drug-trafficking, gun-running, government-toppling, and assassination. The Iran-Contra scandal is not merely a plan gone awry, the authors argue, but a consistent outgrowth of a long tradition of U.S. covert activity- from the Bay of Pigs invasion teams to the NSC organizational team; from the CIA and the World Anti-Communist League to the Israeli connection and the State Department.

The New Production of Knowledge

release date: Jul 21, 1994
The New Production of Knowledge
In this provocative and broad-ranging work, the authors argue that the ways in which knowledge - scientific, social and cultural - is produced are undergoing fundamental changes at the end of the twentieth century. They claim that these changes mark a distinct shift into a new mode of knowledge production which is replacing or reforming established institutions, disciplines, practices and policies. Identifying features of the new mode of knowledge production - reflexivity, transdisciplinarity, heterogeneity - the authors show how these features connect with the changing role of knowledge in social relations. While the knowledge produced by research and development in science and technology is accorded central concern, the authors also outline the changing dimensions of social scientific and humanities knowledge and the relations between the production of knowledge and its dissemination through education.

Mosaic Orpheus

release date: Apr 01, 2009
Mosaic Orpheus
Working always to connect the polemical to the personal, Peter Dale Scott''s political poems - from the tear gas of Berkeley protests in the 1960s to the problems of Thai forest monks in an era of drug-trafficking and deforestation - are a process of self-questioning. Self-questioning also marks his meditation poems, including a sequence on the death of his first wife. In opposition to contemporary poems of studied meaninglessness, Scott increasingly recognizes a compulsion in himself to radically reaffirm traditional rejections of the external world and turn to the refuges of poets before him, the enduring commonplaces that are more than cliches.

The Crisis of the University

release date: Oct 11, 2018
The Crisis of the University
Originally published in 1984, The Crisis of the University looks at the way in which changes to intellectual life relate to the development of the different institutions that make up higher education. It examines the evolution of the liberal university that flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries into the modern university that has grown up since 1945. It also looks at the more detailed experience of British higher education, with separate chapters on what the Robbins expansion meant for the universities and why it was thought necessary to construct an alternative in the shape of the polytechnics. Looking to the future, the book argues first that the present structure of British higher education needs reform and speculates on the future intellectual and social demands that may be made of higher education.

Governing Universities

release date: Jan 01, 1996
Governing Universities
The governance of higher education in the UK was regarded until recently as the ''dignified'' element within the constitution of the academy. University councils were trustees rather than directors. But governance is now a contested area and, in particular, lay governors are seen as key change agents, responsible for reforming the old donnish culture of elite higher education. Governing Universities explores who governors are, how they conceive of their new roles, and what they think about higher education policy. It examines whether governing bodies have become more actively engaged in setting institutional policies; and whether governors have changed the old culture or gone ''native''. It sets university governance in the large context of the massification and ''marketization'' of higher education; and draws comparisons both with other parts of the public sector and the private sector, and with governance in North America and the rest of Europe.

Seeds of Western Culture: Universal Chronology, the Exoduses and Archilochus' Odyssey

release date: Jan 01, 2025
Seeds of Western Culture: Universal Chronology, the Exoduses and Archilochus' Odyssey
The book rediscovers two of the main seeds of Western Culture – the Exodus and the Odyssey, which are entwined within the book by both a common link with Egypt and a review of ancient chronology. They were both antecedents to the rise of Christianity, which is at the heart of Western Culture. It was inspired by a desire to understand the spiritual message of the Odyssey, which required both geographical and spiritual interpretations of the poem. Linked to this was a desire to understand the political context of the Trojan story, which required resolving the false hiatus in the archaeology of Troy. This resulted in a new paradigm for understanding ancient chronology, which revealed the stories behind the Exodus and the location of the Garden of Eden. Writing the book has been a long and eventful journey, longer than Odysseus’ 19 years away from home. The book is written in five parts: • Universal Chronology - Based on the identification of Menophres with Thutmose III and of the Bubastite Portal’s reference to Shoshenq’s participation in the Battle of Qarqar, the Egyptian Third Intermediate Period is shortened by 120 years, with a pharaoh ruling from Tanis and subordinate kings at Bubastis and Thebes. • The Exodus - Using the Universal Chronology and genealogical information and dates provided by the Bible, it is demonstrated that the story of the Exodus is a combination of two events, being the exodus of the Hyksos led by Abraham in 1406 BC following the eruption of Thera, and the exodus of the Atenist (Levite) priests led by Moses in about the first year of Tutankhamun - 1204 BC. The story of Abraham also reveals the location of the Garden of Eden in the heartland of the Levant. • Radiocarbon Dating – The process that created the dendrochronology-based radiocarbon calibration curve is demonstrated to be a flawed non-scientific process that relied upon circular arguments. • The Odyssey – By comparing the life and work of Archilochus to both the Odyssey and the Iliad, it is shown that Archilochus must have been the author of the Odyssey. The allegory within the Odyssey is also discussed to provide both geographical and spiritual interpretations of the poem. • Western Culture - The two main streams of Western Culture (Ancient Greece and Christianity) are shown to have had their foundations in the stories surrounding the Trojan War, the spiritual message of the Odyssey and the influences of Egypt on Greece and Judaism. It is shown how Greek and Jewish religions were fused to create the Gospels and contributed towards modern astrology.

Strategies for Postsecondary Education

release date: Oct 11, 2018
Strategies for Postsecondary Education
Originally published in 1975, Strategies for Postsecondary Education looks at how postsecondary education absorbs an increasing proportion of education budgets in developed countries. The book analyses the inequalities in the American postsecondary education system and compares its performance with France and the United Kingdom. The traditional concept of higher education with its preference for the college sector is now being challenged by the notion of postsecondary education which embraces the community colleges and preparatory schools in the United States and the polytechnics in Great Britain. The book argues that the development of the non-collegiate sector, including further education outside a formal educational context, will extend the range of educational opportunity and make much better use of limited resources.
