City of Refugees

release date: May 15, 2020
City of Refugees
Where should they go? 70 million displaced refugees and asylum seekers with no passport, no money, and no worldly goods. In 380 B.C. Plato wrote about the "Ideal City," but it wasn''t until 1516 AD that Sir Thomas More invented the word, "Utopia," translated from Greek as "good place," that is in need of a new, contemporary interpretation. It is within the framework of utopia that the City of Refugees represents a place that transcends the fate of the refugee and the reason they were torn from their homeland and not given safe haven fleeing their country. It is a concept for a new city that welcomes these optimistic people looking for a place to be free from oppression. The City of Refugees is a soft place to land that believes in the future. The University of Houston College of Architecture + Design with 135 students is proposing four cities on four continents as prototypes that represent a real Utopia for housing the unprecedented migration of people moving across borders. This UN-sponsored, free economic zone for the four cities can be funded by small fractions of the defense budgets appropriated by the UN. The innovative cities create a platform for a new, multi-ethnic society based upon justice, tolerance, and economically viable with a net zero energy consumption within a sustainable environment. The new three-dimensional cities redefine the concept of streets by no longer needing cars creating a real utopia for those with no voice.

Thermal Variation and the Built Environment of Jackson, Mississippi

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Thermal Variation and the Built Environment of Jackson, Mississippi
Urbanization and a changing climate have encouraged more discussion as to how the urban heat island affects humans and society. This research examines three temperature variables (air temperature, apparent temperature, and surface skin temperature) across the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area to determine if intra-city thermal variability in select neighborhoods and business districts is connected to the built environment of each location. Using hand-held observation equipment, official weather observations from nearby airports, and land cover data from the United States Geological Survey, this research suggests that the built environment is contributing to the thermal variability around the city; however, the fine scale variations require closer investigation of the built environment around them to confirm or deny their role in the variations. Some sustainable urban design recommendations such as street shading and increasing the tree canopy are included for select areas throughout the Jackson Metro (Lakeland Drive, the Governor’s Mansion, etc.).

Evaluation of Landscape Alternatives for Managing Oak at Tenalquot Prairie, Washington

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Evaluation of Landscape Alternatives for Managing Oak at Tenalquot Prairie, Washington
In recent years, interest has increased in restoring Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana Dougl. ex Hook.) and prairie landscapes in the Pacific Northwest, especially where elements of historical plant communities are intact. We evaluated the effect of alternative management scenarios on the extent and condition of Oregon white oak, the extent of prairie, and the harvest and standing volumes of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) within a 2934-ha portion of Fort Lewis, Washington (named the Tenalquot Planning Area for the purpose of the project). A landscape-level analysis of the scenarios was completed using a geographic information system, a forest growth model (ORGANON), and landscape visualization software (EnVision). The scenarios ranged from no active management to restoration of the historical extent of oak and prairies within the planning area. The results indicate that the window of opportunity for restoring oak and prairie landscapes in the Puget Sound lowlands and other regions is small, and aggressive management is needed to maintain or enhance these landscapes. The project demonstrates the value of landscape-level analyses and the use of new technologies for conveying the results of alternative management scenarios.

How to Build the Ghost in Your Attic

release date: Jan 01, 2007
How to Build the Ghost in Your Attic
Poetry. A book-length narrative poem, or a novella-in-verse if you prefer, HOW TO BUILD THE GHOST IN YOUR ATTIC is a novel-poem with a literary sci-fi bent, a shadow-text to Oedipus written in a style that is up-to-the-minute. With wit, dynamism, and cutting senses of urgency and humor, Iowa Prize winner Peter Jay Shippy tells the tale of Isaac Makepeace Watt, a melancholy man living in a Thebes that is much like contemporary America. The House of Cadmus still rules (and will fall), but they only appear in the poem as media white noise. Isaac''s concerns are personal, his father''s illness and his own moral decrepitude. There are talking monkeys, plagues, oracles, and nano-robots-you know, the usual agoramania.

Piecing Together Modular

release date: Jan 01, 2007
Piecing Together Modular
The primary purpose of this thesis is to explain the benefits and limitations of modular construction as it pertains to primarily wood-frame, multifamily housing in the United States. This thesis attempts to educate the consumer/builder/developer about what the modular construction process entails from beginning to end. Long term demographic trends point to a steady and increasing need for housing production. Decreasing development yields and increasing construction costs and regulations are making it more difficult for the market to meet this need. It is the authors'' goal that the knowledge contained in this thesis helps to introduce developers to the basic issues involved in this relatively underutilized but potentially beneficial process.

Comparative Analysis of Functional Assessment Methodologies and Functional Analysis for Young Children with Or at Risk for Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders

Comparative Analysis of Functional Assessment Methodologies and Functional Analysis for Young Children with Or at Risk for Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders
This study indicated that descriptive assessment results had low consistency with each other, 8/24 (33%) agreements between assessments, and that the outcomes of two of the three descriptive assessments (i.e., the interview and checklist) also had low agreement with the functional analyses with 3/8 (38%) agreements. However, the direct observations agreed with the functional analyses conclusions for all 4/4 (100%) of the participants. These results do not support the concurrent validity of the three descriptive assessments or the construct validity of the checklist or the interview, but do support the construct validity of direct observations.

Thieves' Latin

release date: Apr 01, 2005
Thieves' Latin
“Ah, writ happens.” Like the con men who rely on thieves'' Latin to ply their trade, the poems in Peter Jay Shippy''s award-winning collection don''t play well with other poems. They are difficult. They rave. They are unsettling and blunt. They crash cars and ride tsunamis and hitch rides on tugs. They also provide a contemporary, ironic, and tender view of America, all the while layering wordplay, cleverness, and sentiment.
