The Hive and the Honey
From the beloved award-winning author Paul Yoon comes a spectacular collection of unique stories, each confronting themes of identity, belonging, and the collision of cultures across countries and centuries. Ann Patchett ''A master at finding depth of emotion in formal restraint.'' Hernan Diaz Absorbing...Yoon details fully realized and flawed characters attempting to wade through the complexities of immigrant life...[and] asks urgent questions about what it really means to belong somewhere.'' Time, 100 Must-Read Books of 2023 A boy searches for his father, a prison guard on Sakhalin Island. In Barcelona, a woman is tasked with spying on a prizefighter who may or may not be her estranged son. A samurai escorts an orphan to his countrymen in the Edo Period. A formerly incarcerated man starts a new life in a small town in upstate New York and attempts to build a family. The Hive and the Honey is a bold and indelible collection by celebrated author Paul Yoon, one that portrays the vastness and complexity of diasporic communities, with each story bringing to light the knotty inheritances of their characters. How does a North Korean defector connect with the child she once left behind? What are the traumas that haunt a Korean settlement in Far East Russia? Lauded as a “quotidian-surreal craft-master” (New York magazine), Yoon’s stunning stories are laced with beauty and cruelty, and The Hive and the Honey is the work of an author writing at the very height of his powers.

Run Me to Earth

release date: Jan 28, 2020
Run Me to Earth
From award-winning author Paul Yoon comes a “spellbinding” (The Washington Post) novel about three kids orphaned in 1960s Laos—and how their destinies are entwined across decades, anointed by Hernan Diaz as “one of those rare novels that stays with us to become a standard with which we measure other books.” Alisak, Prany, and Noi—three orphans united by devastating loss—must do what is necessary to survive the perilous landscape of 1960s Laos. When they take shelter in a bombed out field hospital, they meet Vang, a doctor dedicated to helping the wounded at all costs. Soon the teens are serving as motorcycle couriers, delicately navigating their bikes across the fields filled with unexploded bombs, beneath the indiscriminate barrage from the sky. In a world where the landscape and the roads have turned into an ocean of bombs, we follow their grueling days of rescuing civilians and searching for medical supplies, until Vang secures their evacuation on the last helicopters leaving the country. It’s a move with irrevocable consequences—and sets them on disparate and treacherous paths across the world. Spanning decades, this “richly layered” (The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice) book weaves together storylines laced with beauty and cruelty. Paul Yoon’s “greatest skill lies in crafting subtle moments that underline the strange and specific sadness inherent to trauma” (Time) and this book is a breathtaking historical feat and a fierce study of the powers of hope, perseverance, and grace.

Chasseurs de neige
» - Kirkus Review

Panamopolis

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Panamopolis
In recent years, a radical chain reaction of events has pushed Panama into a state of depression - economically, environmentally and socially. A history of negligence and ignorance by the government has resulted in an obsession with tourism and services to build the country''s economy, leaving no support for the rural population, most now subsistence farmers. In need of food to survive, this large population of impoverished rural dwellers desperately practice illegal and unsustainable agricultural techniques that are wiping out the country''s forests at an alarming rate, giving Panama the 9th fastest rate of deforestation globally. Deforestation has destroyed the soil''s ability to absorb carbon and water, and Panama is a major contributor to climate change. The country has experienced major intensification of extreme weather conditions and natural disasters. An increased fluctuation of weather conditions has badly affected the country''s hydroelectric energy sources, and Panama has grown a huge dependency on oil to produce energy, all of which is imported from the USA. As it stands, the nation is in a state of emergency. Alleviation of a hugely agonized country is imperative and Panama demands a new strategy for positive development. Precedents have shown how a new set of government policies, dedicated to infrastructural planning, have greatly contributed to improve the social and economic conditions in south and central America particularly Brazil (Curitiba), Colombia (Medellin), Chile, Venezuela (Caracas) and Costa Rica.

Autrefois le rivage

release date: Apr 02, 2014
» The New York Times

Multiple Attribute Decision Making
Multiple attribute decision making (MADM) procedures, a process for making preference decisions over the available alternatives which are characterized by multiple (usually conflicting) attributes are useful for improving decision making in a wide range of circumstances--from professional to managerial to political. Using real-world case examples, the authors introduce the reader to normative (for optimal decisions) MADM models. Beginning in chapter 2 with and introductions to the various attributes in a decision, the authors explore how MADM methods can be used for descriptive purposes to model the existing decision-making process, noncompensatory and scoring methods, accommodation of soft data, construction of a multiple decision support system, and the validity of methods. The authors also include a presentation of the advanced procedures of TOPSIS and ELECTRE. This manual offers social scientists an encapsulated view of MADM methods, their characteristics, applicability, and the methods for solving MADM problems.
