ABCs of z/OS System Programming: Volume 4

release date: Feb 10, 2011
ABCs of z/OS System Programming: Volume 4
This IBM® Redbooks® publication describes the functions of z/OS® Communications Server. z/OS Communications Server provides a set of communications protocols that support peer-to-peer connectivity functions for both local and wide-area networks, including the most popular wide-area network, the Internet. z/OS Communications Server also provides performance enhancements that can benefit a variety of TCP/IP applications. z/OS Communications Server provides both SNA and TCP/IP networking protocols for z/OS. The SNA protocols are provided by VTAM® and include Subarea, Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking, and High Performance Routing protocols. z/OS Communications Server exploits z/OS UNIX® services even for traditional MVSTM environments and applications. Prior to utilizing TCP/IP services, therefore, a full-function mode z/OS UNIX environment including a Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMSdfp), a z/OS UNIX file system, and a security product (such as Resource Access Control Facility, or RACF®) must be defined and active before z/OS Communications Server can be started successfully. The ABCs of z/OS System Programming is a 13-volume collection that provides an introduction to the z/OS operating system and the hardware architecture. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced system programmer, the ABCs collection provides the information that you need to start your research into z/OS and related subjects. If you want to become more familiar with z/OS in your current environment, or if you are evaluating platforms to consolidate your e-business applications, the ABCs collection will serve as a powerful technical tool. Iraq and the War on Terror

release date: Oct 28, 2005
Iraq and the War on Terror
Since the start of the Iraq conflict, world-renowned security expert Paul Rogers has produced a series of monthly reports scrutinising developments in the occupation and the Iraqi response to it, drawing on the unique range of contacts and material available to the prestigious Oxford Research Group. They have become the standard source material for journalists, policymakers and campaigners writing about Iraq. Now, for the first time, Paul Rogers has brought these reports together to provide a detailed and authoritative analysis of the last year in Iraq. A disturbing picture emerges, in which coalition forces repeatedly misread the direction of the insurgency, in which radical groups gain strength through the ongoing (and underreported) loss of civilian lives at the hands of the occupying forces, and in which the US''s determination to secure the Persian Gulf''s oil and gas resources lock it further and further into a destructive, intractable, and ultimately counter-productive war in the Middle East. Concisely-written and highly accessible, ''Iraq and the War on Terror'' is an indispensable book for anyone interested the Middle East, US foreign policy and international security. Its conclusions about the extent of the damage caused by the war, and how long the occupation looks set to last, will send shockwaves through policymakers in the US and the UK alike.

Forest Health Monitoring in the Interior West

release date: Jan 01, 2001
Forest Health Monitoring in the Interior West
Although forest health may be difficult to define and measure, a strong demand exists for assessment of forest conditions at various state, regional, and national scales. Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) is a national program designed to measure the status, changes, and trends of forest conditions annually. This report presents a broad view of forest health issues affecting the Interior West region of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. We found that the forests of the Interior West have changed considerably in the past century. What is more difficult to assess is whether humans have promoted change that is irreversible, or whether the change we see in the forested landscape is within healthy bounds. Discussions of forest health and forest cover change, the developed and wildland interface, insect and disease disturbances, watershed health, biodiversity, and air quality comprise the body of this report. This initial report sets the stage for more in-depth reports on forest health in the Interior West by introducing the FHM program, defining "the forest" regionally, discussing prominent issues, and displaying summary FHM data taken from 1996-1999. A website address is provided on the inside back cover of this report to solicit reader suggestions for improving future FHM reports.

A Violent Peace

release date: Jan 01, 1992
A Violent Peace
"What does the end of the Cold War mean for world peace? What kind of new world is being constructed out of the former East-West confrontation? The opportunities now exist to create a genuinely peaceful and just new world order. Paul Rogers and Malcolm Dando, widely respected defence analysts, show how this can be achieved." "A Violent Peace begins by examining threats to global stability in the post Cold War era. It looks at the transformation of the nuclear arms race in the 1980s. Do the current arms control processes really curb the development and deployment of the new weapons or will the armaments momentum built up in the last four decades result in more pressure for proliferation throughout the world?" "Recent events have focussed on the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, ballistic missiles and area-impact munitions. As the East-West rivalries appear to diminish, will the industrialised countries of the North slip into a new pattern of confrontation, with the development of military force projection capabilities designed to ''keep the violent peace'' in the Middle East and other parts of the Third World?" "Above all, in a world of finite resources and increased environmental limitations on economic growth, will conflict between the haves and the have-nots usher in a new world disorder just as the ending of the Cold War appeared to be offering a chance of international peace?" "The agenda set by the authors for coping with the challenges now facing the world community includes not only traditional security issues such as arms control but also the wider issues of poverty, the destruction of the environment and the North-South axis of conflict. The intense East-West confrontation over the past 40 years has dominated strategic thinking and excluded large sections of the world''s population from consideration. It is now time to develop new thinking on international security to deal effectively with a changing but not necessarily a less dangerous world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
