How We Can Suffer Our Sorrow

release date: Nov 30, 2023
How We Can Suffer Our Sorrow
In the end, everyone grieves; but most of us do it privately. Underneath the exterior "bucking up," however, there are steps we all take and retake. We slowly let it sink in that life has changed and will never be quite the same. We select what is important to remember even while we fear we will forget. In this unique and compelling book, Pamela Smith, SS.C.M.--no stranger to her own grief and that of others--offers practical ideas to help us "suffer our sorrows" in ways that allow us to become "kinder, better, gentler people" in the process. Using the contemporary American-language translation of the scriptures from The Message Bible translation by Eugene Peterson, especially the Book of Lamentations and the Letters of Paul, Smith offers a biblical and practical pathway to get to the place where "ain''t no one or nobody gonna steal my happy," as one grieving woman put it to the author years ago. Each short chapter offers down-to-Earth insights into the nature of grief, suggestions for dealing effectively with it, a short original prayer, and provocative questions for personal reflection and discussion with others.

We Are Fallen Angels

release date: Nov 07, 2023
We Are Fallen Angels
I have a message for you. However, this message won''t be easy for you to hear. It will likely challenge your very idea of yourself -- the identity you have worked so hard to construct for however many years you have lived past the time of your fall from innocence. I want you to discover through what I have to say that we are indeed fallen angels, which means we are divine creatures, but we live in the face of the death of our mortal bodies and the loss of everything that we have used to piece and hold ourselves together. This is a terrible challenge, yet it has been given to us by a good God. I have written these essays from my own experience. Some of what I have to say may have been classified heretical by whatever faith you have inherited or adopted for yourself. But all real heresy is based in the belief and the need of the human spirit/soul to be equal to its creator. The source of this need is hidden from our view because it comes from the level of ourselves that is beneath our conscious minds. We don''t realize what motivates us from deep inside ourselves, but we always trust it for that very reason. However, it is also the source of self-condemnation. We have designed our religions to alleviate guilt, and to help us believe in our struggle to believe that we are safe in our chosen identities. This solution, however, is based in judgment (the knowledge of good and evil). We use judgment in order to define a self in relation to something outside ourselves -- usually other people. They are "us" or "not us". "Us" is good, and "not us" is evil. This is the essence of what we call love, and also of resentment, hatred, and war. The devil, also known as the satan, is hidden inside us. It is the adversary and accuser both of God and of our mortal selves. Our task here on earth is to win the battle against the divine fallen part of ourselves, and to raise it up along with our bodies of flesh. I hope to prove to you from the Bible and from reason that this is our shared human challenge, and that you can and will win the battle. We are all children of one parent, who is God. As the best possible parent, He loves and intends to save every one of us. The fiery furnace is the power of His love. It is Him, and He burns away the dross. The light at the end of the tunnel of torment on this fallen earth is inner peace, love, and joy, now and forever. The battle is already won in heaven, and heaven already exists. Fear not!

A History of the Diocese of Charleston

release date: Jun 01, 2020
A History of the Diocese of Charleston
In 1820, the Catholic Diocese of Charleston was established, and Bishop John England arrived from Ireland. His new diocese encompassed North and South Carolina, Georgia and, for a time, Haiti. From 1859 to 1885, when Patrick Lynch and Henry Northrop were bishops of Charleston, the diocese included the Bahama Islands. However, the history of Catholics in the diocese--which now covers all of South Carolina--began much earlier. The arrival of Spanish settlers and missionary priests dated back more than 150 years before there was a diocese on American soil. Sister Pam Smith charts the history of the diocese from the first words of prayer uttered on Santa Elena in the sixteenth century through the interfaith singing of a reformed slaveholder''s hymn at a painful funeral in the twenty-first century.

The Wooing of the Father

release date: Aug 15, 2017
The Wooing of the Father
Perhaps the most misunderstood Person among the body of Christ is the Holy Spirit and the role He plays in the life of the Believer. On the night before Jesus'' crucifixion, He made one of the most astounding statements of His whole ministry. "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you." John 16:7 Jesus was saying it was more beneficial for us to have the ministry of the Holy Spirit than it was to have Jesus present with us in His physical body! It is the Holy Spirit of God who brings conviction to the unbeliever and causes him to see the truth of the gospel in a clear light. It is the Holy Spirit who "woos" the sinner to come. He is like a giant magnet drawing you to Christ. He is the One who awakens in man the love of His heavenly Father toward him. This book is about the love of our heavenly Father for all mankind and His desire to fellowship with him. It is about the Holy Spirit''s role in salvation and His ministry in the life of the Believer.

Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace

release date: Apr 12, 2017
Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace
Fiery trials, like a controlled fire, leads to better growth. After a controlled fire, the soil is richer, and the trees are stronger. Likewise, after a fiery trial the Christian is stronger, and their character is richer. Adversity enters the Christian''s life only through, and by, the permission of God. It doesn''t come to weaken us, but to strengthen us. When we learn how to tap into God''s anointing for our breakthrough, we can then be instrumental in blessing others, as God has blessed us. "Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace" is about the struggles Christians encounter during their faith journey, and God''s divine interventions. It will teach you how to walk by faith, and encourage you on this Christian journey. It will inspire you when your light of hope grows dim, and comfort you when despair constrains your progress. Excerpts from "Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace": The anointing is given to empower you for the greater works ahead. Job likened the trying of his faith to that of gold being purged of its impurities. Job was tested to see if he would remain faithful to God when God doesn''t answer, and to reveal unto others the awesome resurrecting power of God to restore double, and even more, what Satan steals.
