release date: Apr 22, 2024
Nancy Kay's Rockin' Recipes
I first got my inspiration to cook at the tender age of 9 when I said to my mother, Dory, "Mommy, can I make soup?" She didn''t hesitate and asked me what kind of soup did I want to make and I responded with "what do we have?" I had a small pot, chicken stock cubes, water and access to whatever was in the fridge. I CUT UP AND PUT EVERY VEGGIE I COULD FIND INTO MY SOUP plus pasta shells...From that moment on, in that Eichler kitchen, on my mother''s stove in Foster City, CA I fell in love with cooking and what I could create just using my imagination and what was in the cupboards... I have learned over the years that if I don''t have a few basic things on hand I couldn''t come up with a new culinary creation when the inspiration struck me and it would drive me crazy. So as a prelogue I would like to outline the ''I gotta have it on hand at all times" pantry list so my creative cooking soul feels safe and content to cook or not to cook...

Selling the Family

release date: Jan 08, 2021
Selling the Family
Selling the Family shares the reflections of a sole surviving family member as she sorts several generations of belongings for a final estate auction, a quintessential experience in rural America. The setting is a 33-acre property in southwestern Wisconsin, a forested coulee on the Mississippi River, but the story is reflective of any rural setting in the Upper Midwest. Nancy Kay Peterson recounts the deaths of her immediate family and watches an auctioneer''s staff organize the sale of what to the family were thoughtfully acquired possessions collected over several lifespans. She sees childhood treasures tossed together for bundled bids, her father''s WWII memorabilia appraised, gifts given laid out for re-sale, unsaleable household goods thrown into the trash. As the staff works, Nancy "saves" what she can by giving items away to friends - "grandmother''s quilts and doilies, never used egg coddlers, silver appetizer forks, Norwegian sweaters." She picks up useful items like poster putty, but also rescues the unnecessary -- her sister''s small wooden puffin and her brother-in-law''s Norwegian bottle opener. As she watches the meaningful property in her relatives'' eyes being transformed into merchandise to be sold or simply trashed, Nancy relives the memories she will never again be able to share with someone else who remembers them, too. Just before the auction, she strews the ashes of her sister and brother-in-law on the land they loved, and as she walks the property one last time, she examines the depth of her grief. While the story is melancholy, it''s telling is honest, rather than sentimental, cathartic, rather than debilitating, and ends, as it must, on a thin note of joy and gratitude for the love once shared.

Jane Austen, Marriage, and Emma

release date: Aug 08, 2017
Jane Austen, Marriage, and Emma
readers came --to remain dependent upon her family as an "old maid" or to attempt to earn a meager salary as a governess-we might conclude that the novel is, at least in part, a tract urging all to marry. But Austen is, in fact, ambivalent about marriage. This ambivalence is present in Emma''s thinking about marriage. Although Emma is eager to do what she can to facilitate the marriages of others, she resists the idea that she should marry. When the novel opens, Emma''s observations of the marriages of others have led her to the conclusion that none of the couples have what she would want for herself in a marriage. This ambivalence is, no doubt, partly the result of Emma''s self-delusions. But it also owes much to the problems which Jane Austen saw with the institution of marriage. If, as I shall argue, Emma''s conclusions are accurate reflections of Austen''s own opinion of marriage and most marriages, why does Austen nevertheless end the novel by having Emma marry Mr. Knightley? The reader of the novel might well like to ask Jane Austen a question similar to Emma''s when she asked her father, "My dear papa, you are no friend of matrimony and therefore why should you be so anxious to pay your respects...

Effect of the 6+1 Trait Writing Model on Student Writing Achievement
The focus of this study was to determine the difference between teaching the 6+1 Trait Writing Model to fifth graders and the traditional writing workshop method of teaching writing on overall student writing achievement according to the data supplied by a writing rubric. The study involved 8 classes of fifth graders in 2 different schools. One school provided instruction according to the 6+1 Trait Writing Model, and the other school provided instruction using the traditional writing workshop method of teaching writing. It was hypothesized that students receiving instruction using the 6+1 Trait Writing Model would exhibit greater gains in writing achievement and quality according to the data supplied by a writing rubric. Significant differences were found in two out of four component areas on the rubric used for scoring student papers. Results indicated that the type of method used to teach writing is not as significant as providing structured instruction as well as time for student writing. Suggestions for further research are also included.

What Love Means to You People
A powerful debut about a young man whose denial of his past nearly destroys the new life he seeks Shaking off his hellish adolescence in a nowhere Nebraska town (and leaving a beloved younger sister to fend for herself in the same hostile environment), Seth McKenna escapes to make a new reality for himself as a struggling artist in Manhattan. When he falls hard for Jim Glaser, an alluring older man who is astonished to find in Seth the second love of his life, it seems simpler to gloss over his old life in Drinkwater and the history he used to have. Jim, who expected to remain alone forever, is happy to start over, too, and theirs becomes a tender, sexy romance. Although Seth seems to have successfully put his past behind him to become the man he wants to be---the kind of man Jim can cherish---his childhood rushes back unexpectedly and with a vengeance. When Seth''s sister, Cassie, arrives in the city with significant secrets and plans of her own, Drinkwater''s intractable demands force Seth to revisit his hidden past. What Jim learns about Seth''s concealments threatens to destroy their new life together. An engrossing contemporary drama of family ties both imposed and chosen, What Love Means to You People presents an indelible, illuminating look at the survival of the human spirit through willful reinvention and the power of love.
