Comparative study using banana peel and male flower as substrates for amylase production using Aspergillus niger in Kerala: an overview

Comparative study using banana peel and male flower as substrates for amylase production using Aspergillus niger in Kerala: an overview
Amylases are well known for applications ranging from starch and food processes industry to medical applications. The increased demand for these enzymes in various industries has led to an enormous interest in developing enzymes with better properties such as raw starch degrading amylases. It is suggested that banana peel and male inflorescence could employ as a promising substrate for the production of amylase by Aspergillus niger. Further, solid state fermentation is a better choice for amylase production. The addition of external growth medium is also found beneficial for increasing enzyme production. The present study was undertaken to isolate, identify and characterize the Aspergillus niger in the culture medium followed by amylase production and extraction. The banana parts used here as substrates are ripe fruit peel and male inflorescence from locally cultivated species Ethan (Nendran), Palayamkodan (Palayanthodan), Rasakadali (Njali Poovan) and Sundari. The result shows that amylase from sundari peel have the best activity followed by Ethan peel. Ethan flower bud shows the least activity among the eight substrates under study.

Morphological, molecular and biochemical characterization of selected banana varieties in Kerala and evaluation of their anticancer activities: an overview

Morphological, molecular and biochemical characterization of selected banana varieties in Kerala and evaluation of their anticancer activities: an overview
Banana is one of the most important food crops all over the world. There are around 365 varieties of bananas available throughout the world. Banana is a traditional medicine for diabetes, cancer, diarrhoea and also highly nutritional food crop. In this study, commonly used varieties of banana are taken for characterization by morphology and genotype which is based on International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and RAPD analysis. Five varieties were morphologically similar in parameters such as leaf habit, pseudo stem appearance and peel color. RAPD analysis proved that these varieties of banana are closely related which coincides with the morphological characterization. Also, this study is aimed at examining the anticancer activity of Musa acuminata variety of banana which is commonly consumed in southern part of India. Anticancer examination of the sample was performed for the hexane extract using DLA and MG-63 cell lines which showed a high degree of anticancer activity which was proved by the cytotoxic effect on the tumor cell lines. Phytochemicals present in the plant concentrate provoked cell apoptosis and smoother cell expansion to quickly partitioning malignancy cell lines. Among the five varieties analysed, Musa accuminata Colla variety shows increased level of anticancer activity in both cell lines. So it is anticipated that this variety can be used as medicine orally for cancer treatment.

Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Glyphosate Resistant Bacteria from Agricultural Soils in Kerala

release date: Apr 28, 2017
Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Glyphosate Resistant Bacteria from Agricultural Soils in Kerala
Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1.5, Mar Augusthinose College, language: English, abstract: Glyphosate (N-phosphonomethylglycine) is a herbicide that is used worldwidely. Its common trade name is Roundup. Its non-targeted species action makes it most popular herbicide. It was developed by Monsanto company. The primary target for glyphosate is the enzyme EPSPS (5-enolpyruvoylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase). When glyphosate binds to EPSPS it forms a very stable complex that essentially permanently disables the enzyme and hence affect the metabolic activity of the plant and results in its death. Finding Glyphosate degrading microorganisms from soil is an interesting topic since glyphosate is non- targeted in its toxicity. Microorganisms were isolated from soil samples, which were then identified by molecular method. Isolation of DNA, its amplification using 16s rRNA gene and its sequencing are the major steps involved. Bioinformatics tool helps to identify the microorganisms. Two microorganisms identified are Pseudomonas sp. and Achromobacter sp. In the phylogenetic analysis also the two organisms are grouped as separate clads. In these, strain 1 showed highest growth in the Glyphosate containing medium than strain 2. These results show that the bacterial strain may possess potential to be used in bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated environments.
