Examining the Relationships Between Violent Media Programming, Aggression and Prosocial Behaviors Among Black College Students

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Examining the Relationships Between Violent Media Programming, Aggression and Prosocial Behaviors Among Black College Students
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between violent media programming, aggression and prosocial behaviors among Black college students. The study included 108 Black college students from a historically Black college/university on the East Coast. The researcher evaluated the participants’ aggression using Buss & Warren’s (2000) Aggression Questionnaire and evaluated the participants’ prosocial behaviors using Penner’s (1995) prosocial personality battery. The researcher then used an independent samples t-test to analyze the data and test the hypothesis that a relationship between the variables exists. Furthermore, the researcher employed discriminant analysis to determine if group membership could be predicted, based on scores on the aggression questionnaire. The independent samples t-test produced results that indicated a statistically significant difference in mean scores on the aggression questionnaire, between light viewers and heavy viewers of violent media programming. The discriminant analysis produced results which indicated the predictor variable, scores on the aggression questionnaire, predicts group membership in either heavy or light viewers, at a statistically significant level (p= .024). Additionally, visual inspection of the scores on the prosocial personality battery indicated participants who reported engaging in violent media programming scored significantly lower on the prosocial personality battery than those who reported engaging in light viewing of violent media programming. Results contribute to literature, research, practice and theory in the field of counseling.

American Liberation Mythologies

release date: Jan 01, 2012
American Liberation Mythologies
A myth of liberation saturates the cultural landscape of the United States, structuring the collective consciousness, guiding political action, and disguising the nation''s patterns of domination. This study grew out of a concern over the United States'' engagement in two wars with the stated aims of liberation and the spread of democracy. Anthropological theories of myth assert a reciprocal relationship between political action and creative expression; through myths we reflect upon culture, in culture we enact myths. Popular media is a prominent realm for the creation and performance of contemporary myths. By analyzing performances of popular culture as expressions of the myth of liberation (Bruce Willis'' "Tears of the Sun," "American Idol," and Clint Eastwood''s "Gran Torino"), this dissertation delineates the parameters of the national myth that declares an identity of the U.S. as liberator to the world''s oppressed, sanctifies the democratic ideal, and valorizes consumer capital. Analyses also reveal a U.S. identity of dominator in the global community, the betrayal of the democratic ideal through the commoditization of the democratic gesture, and the implementation of segregation and terrorization to support the exploitation of consumerism. Myths are paradoxical, and this study asserts that U.S. culture exhibits a societal tension between liberty and domination. In the form of popular culture, myths attempt to mediate this social paradox. Drawing from the methodologies and theories of cultural anthropology, folklore, sociology, media studies, performance studies, U.S. history and international relations this dissertation offers insights into four issues of vital importance: the role of the U.S. in globalization, the recent national crisis in democracy, the violence of consumerism, and the dialectical relationship between popular culture and political action. This research is grounded in the anthropological understanding that cultural products are both models of, and models for, cultural action. Following such an understanding, it concludes by asserting, through reference to the variations of the myth explored, that the producers and consumers of culture have the ability to reconstruct the myth of liberation and move U.S. culture out of its socio-historic patterns of violence and domination and toward a mythic construction of creative intervention and cross-cultural dialogue.

A Case Study of Virtual Physical Education Teachers' Experiences in and Perspectives of Online Teaching

release date: Jan 01, 2013
A Case Study of Virtual Physical Education Teachers' Experiences in and Perspectives of Online Teaching
The 21st century has brought changes to education [mdash;] changes that include greater distance learning options for middle and high school students. While distance learning has been around for a century, the progressive ways in which students are able to select and complete virtual courses through the internet in nearly every secondary content area are increasing. Physical education courses at the secondary level are among the courses offered online to students across the United States and Canada. One question that prevails in communities and particularly in physical education circles is, "How do you teach PE online?" In an effort to address that very question, this study sought to describe online secondary physical education instruction through the lived experiences of four teachers who were doing just that. This was a 12[ndash;]week qualitative case study that included data from two interviews with each of the four online PE teachers, interviews with two distance education administrators, virtual classroom observations, field notes, and the researcher''s reflections. Analysis of the data showed that these online PE teachers had similar pathways to the online setting, they provided individualized instruction to their students, they offered students choices in the online PE classes, they facilitated student success in the online PE classes, and they each implicitly ascribed to constructivist educational theories and practices as online PE teachers. The results of this study support the premise that online secondary[ndash;]level PE instruction has been a viable option for some teachers in the U.S. and Canada.

Museums of the Mind

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Museums of the Mind
This dissertation project, "Museums of the Mind: The Ekphrastic Imagination in the African American Literary Tradition," at its core is a project of redress and reclamation that seeks to uncover the connection between the non-inclusive spaces of museums, galleries, lyceums, menageries, and exhibition halls in which black artists find themselves working and the creativity with which writers sympathetic to the difficulties encountered by visual artists confront this reality in their ekphrastic work. It explores the relationship between early antebellum moments of cognitive estrangement, wonder, and jubilation when black subjects are confronted with pictorial and other plastic arts in the Americas and the development of a painterly ekphrastic aesthetic in literature, which exists in a loving antagonism with traditional museum culture and emerging media technologies. This dissertation project argues that African American writers revise and extend traditional ekphrasis in order to create spectral art spaces to hang their imagined artworks.
