Pacifism as Pathology has long since emerged as a dissident classic. Originally written during the mid-1980s, the seminal essay “Pacifism as Pathology” was prompted by veteran activist Ward Churchill’s frustration with what he diagnosed as a growing—and deliberately self-neutralizing—”hegemony of nonviolence” on the North American left. The essay’s publication unleashed a raging debate among activists in both the U.S. and Canada, a significant result of which was Michael Ryan’s penning of a follow-up essay reinforcing Churchill’s premise that nonviolence, at least as the term is popularly employed by white “progressives,” is inherently counterrevolutionary, adding up to little more than a manifestation of its proponents’ desire to maintain their relatively high degrees of socioeconomic privilege and thereby serving to stabilize rather than transform the prevailing relations of power. This short book challenges the pacifist movement’s heralded victories—Gandhi in India, 1960s antiwar activists, even Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights movement—suggesting that their success was in spite of, rather than because of, their nonviolent tactics. The aim of this Research Topic for Frontiers in Psychology under the section of Cognitive Science and Frontiers in Neurorobotics is to present state-of-the-art research, whether theoretical, empirical, or computational investigations, on open-ended development driven by intrinsic motivations. The topic will address questions such as: How do motivations drive learning? How are complex skills built up from a foundation of simpler competencies? What are the neural and computational bases for intrinsically motivated learning? What is the contribution of intrinsic motivations to wider cognition? Autonomous development and lifelong open-ended learning are hallmarks of intelligence. Higher mammals, and especially humans, engage in activities that do not appear to directly serve the goals of survival, reproduction, or material advantage. Rather, a large part of their activity is intrinsically motivated - behavior driven by curiosity, play, interest in novel stimuli and surprising events, autonomous goal-setting, and the pleasure of acquiring new competencies. This allows the cumulative acquisition of knowledge and skills that can later be used to accomplish fitness-enhancing goals. Intrinsic motivations continue during adulthood, and in humans artistic creativity, scientific discovery, and subjective well-being owe much to them. The study of intrinsically motivated behavior has a long history in psychological and ethological research, which is now being reinvigorated by perspectives from neuroscience, artificial intelligence and computer science. For example, recent neuroscientific research is discovering how neuromodulators like dopamine and noradrenaline relate not only to extrinsic rewards but also to novel and surprising events, how brain areas such as the superior colliculus and the hippocampus are involved in the perception and processing of events, novel stimuli, and novel associations of stimuli, and how violations of predictions and expectations influence learning and motivation. Computational approaches are characterizing the space of possible reinforcement learning algorithms and their augmentation by intrinsic reinforcements of different kinds. Research in robotics and machine learning is yielding systems with increasing autonomy and capacity for self-improvement: artificial systems with motivations that are similar to those of real organisms and support prolonged autonomous learning. Computational research on intrinsic motivation is being complemented by, and closely interacting with, research that aims to build hierarchical architectures capable of acquiring, storing, and exploiting the knowledge and skills acquired through intrinsically motivated learning. Now is an important moment in the study of intrinsically motivated open-ended development, requiring contributions and integration across a large number of fields within the cognitive sciences. On the morning of September 11 2001 Pasquale Buzzelli was working on the 64th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. His wife Louise was at home, seven months pregnant with their first child. She was woken that morning by a call from Pasquale who asked her to put on the television as his building was on fire. As Louise watched in horror, the events of 9/11 unfolded over the next few hours. Pasquale called her again and told her he was about to evacuate the building but, just minutes later, Louise watched as the North Tower collapsed with Pasquale still inside. She was sure she had watched her husband and father of her unborn child die in front of her eyes... Pasquale was in the middle of evacuating and reached the stairwell on the 22nd floor when the North Tower collapsed. He remembers thinking "this is how Im going to die" as he fell with the building. Miraculously, he survived the fall and awoke three hours later perched on a pile of rubble on a concrete slab 4ft by 4ft sticking out over a huge 60ft drop. Eventually, firemen managed to get him down and he was taken to the hospital. Louise was at home being consoled by family and friends, still thinking he was dead, until late that afternoon, when the phone rang, and it was him on the other line! Pasquale was one of only 16 people to have survived the collapse of the North Tower. Although Pasquale escaped with bruising and a fractured foot, virtually unscathed, the mental scars took a lot longer to heal. In the months after 9/11 Pasquale found it hard to come to terms with what happened that he had survived and his friends and colleagues had not. He became distant from his wife and newly born baby as the guilt made it impossible for him to be happy. At the same time Louise was experiencing her own PTSD. As joyous as she was to find out her husband survived, she equally felt pain and sorrow for those whose husbands were not as fortunate. Stories in the press would show widows and babies of men who had died in the attacks. "It is hard to imagine the pain they suffered and the strength they needed to carry out their pregnancy." Louise wrote A Song for Hope (named after their newborn daughter) and the money from the sale of the CD was shared among the widows and their babies born after 9/11. 'We All Fall Down: The True Story of the 9/11 Surfer' is the story of how Pasquale dealt with the horrific events of 9/11, with the PTSD and survivor guilt that followed, and ultimately with his road to recovery. For Pasquale, 9/11 will always be with him and he thinks about it every day but now, 10 years on, he has realised the best way to respect the memory of those who died, he needs to live for his life again ... "I could not control what had happened to me but now I can control how I would lead my life. How I would be the father and husband that my family deserved and to help and respect my fellow man as I was taught to do by my father".

This study considers how a significant variable, namely level of literary education (enkuklios paideia), might affect an ancient hearer''s interpretation of Revelation 9. This volume focuses on how two hypothetical ancient hearer-constructs, with very different "mental libraries", may interpret the rich cosmological imagery of Revelation 9. The first, ancient hearer-construct (HC1), the recipient of a minimal literary education, retains a Homeric cosmological model. The second ancient hearer-construct (HC2), by contrast, utilises a tertiary-level knowledge of Aratus and Plato to allegorically reinterpret the cosmological imagery of Rev 9 (cf. ''Hippolytus'', Refutatio IV.46-50). The volume concludes by critically comparing the hypothetical responses of HC1 and HC2 with the early reception of Revelation 9 by Victorinus, Tyconius and Oecumenius (3rd-6th century CE), attentive to the educational attainment of each commentator.
