Downsize This!

release date: Aug 12, 1997
Downsize This!
Americans today are working harder, working longer and yet for most of us, in this time of ruthless downsizing and political cronyism, job security, a decent standard of living and a comfortable retirement are becoming harder and harder to find. In this brilliantly funny and right-on-target diatribe, irreverent everyman Michael Moore gives his own bold views on who''s behind the fading of the American dream. Whether issuing Corporate Crook trading cards, organizing a Rodney King Commemorative Riot, sending a donation to Pat Buchanan from the John Wayne Gacy fan club (which was accepted) or trying to commit former right-wing congressman Bob Dornan to a mental hospital, the in-your-face host of TV Nation and director/star of Roger & Me combines an expansive wit with biting social commentary to make you think and laugh at the same time. In hardcover, Downsize This! stormed the bestseller lists of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle and others. Given Michael Moore''s enormous -- and growing -- constituency, this trade paperback edition brings his unique perspective on the nation to an even greater audience.

Will They Ever Trust Us Again?

release date: Jul 07, 2005
Will They Ever Trust Us Again?
Will They Ever Trust Us Again? brings together hundreds of never-before-published letters that Mike has been sent - from GIs serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, from troops in US bases, from their mothers, wives and friends back home, from veterans who''ve fought around the globe - to show the reality beneath the political spin and TV propaganda. Their politics may vary from the Bushwhacked to the patriotic, but they all feel let down and lied to by government, they know the human cost of waging wars for the rich - and now they''ve had enough. Explosive, angry, moving and funny, this book shows who''s really winning the battle for hearts and minds on the front line.

Here Comes Trouble

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Here Comes Trouble
This is not a ''memoir'' or an ''autobiography''. It does not begin with ''I was born eleven days after Bill Haley and the Comets recorded the first rock-n-roll song, and two hours before Hank Aaron hit his first major league home run.'' Though both facts happen to be true, Michael Moore has stopped taking credit for either of them. Before he became an Oscar-winning filmmaker and all-round thorn-in-the-side of corporate America, it turns out that throughout his life Michael Moore had an uncanny knack for showing up just where history was being made. One moment he''s a lost eleven-year-old boy being found by Bobby Kennedy; the next, he''s in a cemetery with a dazed and confused Ronald Reagan. He begins his first underground newspaper in fourth grade; sixteen years later, the police are raiding his printing office. On top of all that, he becomes one of the youngest elected officials in the country at eighteen - but not before planning a ''dry-run'' escape to Canada with his stoner friends in case they get drafted to Vietnam. Fast-forwarding to 2003, his Oscar acceptance speech leaves audiences open-mouthed. And none of that even comes close to the night a friendly priest decides to show him how to perform his own exorcism. Here Comes Trouble takes readers on an unforgettable, take-no-prisoners ride through the life and times of Michael Moore. It might just be the most hilarious, provoking, poignant and inspiring non-autobiography you ever read. Michael Moore is an Oscar-winning film maker and bestselling author. He was born in Flint, Michigan.

Stupid White Men
In the winter of 2002, Stupid White Men took America -- and the world -- by storm. Tired and skeptical of George W. Bush''s high approval ating, frightened by the implications of the Enron scandal -- and generally just looking for a voice of honest dissent in the thick atmosphere of jingoism that followed 9/11 -- book buyers from coast to coast swiftly embraced Michael Moore''s in-your-face anti-Bush-era manifesto, making it one of the bestselling nonfiction books of the year. Whether he''s demanding U.N. action to overthrow the Bush Family Junta or calling on African Americans to place whites only signs over the entrances of unfriendly businesses, Stupid White Men is a pitch-perfect skewering of our culture of Malfeasance and Mediocrity.

Six Strands of the Web
This book is designed for the serious student of Chinese medicine. Both the beginner and advanced practitioner will find this information useful from school to everyday clinical practice. The first section of the book covers a basic history and evolution of the six stages of disease. Chapter Two reviews various theoretical concepts related to the six stages. Symptoms and treatment concepts, according to the Chinese classic Shang Han Lun, are examined in Chapter Three. In Chapter Four complications of combined and overlapping stages of disease show how disease many times will not follow the normal progression of the Six Stage Model. An in- depth study of conformations and the basic treatment concepts for each of the stages are presented in Chapter Five. A quick overview of the twenty-four basic classifications of Chinese herbal formulas will be found in Chapter Six. Primary herbs for each stage and their related formulas are examined in Chapter Seven. Chapter Eight deals with differential diagnosis of syndromes and treatment. Conformations for formulas and a comparison to other formulas from the Classic Shang Han Lun (Treaties on Fever and Chills) and the Jen Kuei Yao Lue (Perceptions from the Golden Chamber) are the main emphasis in Chapter Nine. Practitioners will find Chapter Ten a very useful clinical reference of all ninety herbal formulas (in table form) found in this book. In Chapter Eleven, there are four major lists dealing with the names of individual herbs. The first three lists are a cross reference for herbs listed by the Pin Yin, Pharmaceutical, and Common names. The fourth list gives the classification and function of the 118 herbs used in this work.

Northampton State Hospital

release date: Oct 27, 2014
Northampton State Hospital
Northampton State Hospital, established in 1856, was built with the optimistic spirit of humanitarian reform. For many years, it was run by Dr. Pliny Earle, a champion of treatment that combined individualized care with manual labor, religious worship, recreation, and amusement. This vision was overwhelmed as the hospital was called upon to care for ever-larger numbers of people with varying needs. By the mid-20th century, the hospital was an isolated small city, with hundreds of employees caring for more than 2,000 patients in overcrowded and inadequate conditions. It became a nationally important center of political and legal struggle over the role of state hospitals in the care of the mentally ill. After being gradually phased out, the hospital was closed in 1993, and the buildings, though listed in the National Register of Historic Places, were demolished in 2006. This volume brings to life the 135-year story of Northampton State Hospital through beautiful and haunting photographs drawn from the collections of Historic Northampton, the citys local history museum.

Magruder''s Warwick-Yorktown Line fortifications and the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia. Despite outnumbering Magruder almost four to one, McClellan was tricked by Magruder''s bluff of strength and halted his advance. Yorktown, the scene of Washington''s 1781 victory over Cornwallis, was once again besieged. It was the Civil War''s first siege and lasted for twenty-nine terrible days. Just as McClellan was ready to bombard Yorktown, the Confederates slipped away because of his delays, McClellan lost the opportunity to quickly capture Richmond and end the war. Historians John V.
