Crown of Crowns

release date: Dec 06, 2024
Crown of Crowns
Incepted into his Neo-Trinity at birth, Andy showed strong divergent capabilities as a small child. Belonging to a respected family, he is raised to be loyal, patriotic, and resilient. After the wool industry collapsed in Australia and farmers were stripped of their water rights, things looked scarily grim for Andy. As a result, Andy wound up in a strict Christian brothers’ college in Adelaide, which has a reputation. Caught in a pre-existing football rivalry, he is stubborn and infuriates some, as they can’t seem to compete on a level playing field. This causes diabolical incidents of skulduggery from some of his peers to come into play. Startling many, Andy revolts against society and runs with the devil, who has seduced him. Aware of his mischief, his parents do whatever it takes to secure their son’s safety. While enduring decades of suppression from every direction, the belief and love for Andy is far too great for his foes to befall. Thus, through the power of his Neo-Trinity, Andy finds his deliverance.

Max Guy

release date: Aug 05, 2023
Max Guy
A catalog of an exhibition by contemporary artists Max Guy that uses The Wizard of Oz as a way to ask questions about society and culture. This book accompanies Max Guy''s exhibition "But tell Me, is it a civilized country?," an installation of new works centered on The Wizard of Oz. The title is drawn from a conversation between the Witch of the North and Dorothy in which the Witch defines "civilized" as not including magic. Anchored in Chicago--where L. Frank Baum''s novel was written and first published, and home to enduring monuments to Oz fandom--the exhibition and book bridge the parallel universes of the Emerald City and its birthplace, drawing out the traces each carries of the other. A number of latent currents course underneath the work: critical perspectives on modernist urbanism, the peculiar products of fan culture, and the transformative power of storytelling and other acts of world-making. This catalog features essays by artist and writer Brit Barton and the exhibition''s curator, Michael Harrison, as well as a transcription of a conversation between Guy and artist and writer Irena Haiduk. The book will also include a new artist project made specifically for the book in the form of an annotated bibliography created by Guy of writings and images that relate to and inspire his practice.

The London that was Rome

release date: Feb 14, 2023
The London that was Rome
First published in 1971 The London that was Rome is both a detective story and a tale of buried treasure. Some years ago, Michael Harrison set out to discover the truth about Roman London. Did it survive the Saxon onslaught in the fifth century or (as many historians have claimed) did it lie sacked, ruined, and abandoned for about a century and a half? Searching for an answer, Harrison forged himself a new ‘truth detecting’ method of discovery; but even he could not anticipate the immense success of this method. With ‘New Archaeology’ he has not only recovered the street plan of Roman London, but also replaced the buildings-temples, barracks, banks, baths, picture-galleries, treasuries and so on – which lined those streets. In many cases he has been able to name the streets and at the same time vividly describe for us the social and economic life of a London, which under the Caesars, ranked among the principal cities of the Empire. This book is an interesting read for students of archaeology, history, and for general readers interested to know about London.

The Believer's Marriage with Christ

release date: Sep 08, 2020
The Believer's Marriage with Christ
What does it mean to offer the Gospel freely to sinners? In this work Harrison brings the blessed Gospel offer in all its power in the outward indiscriminate preaching of the word of God. Yes, God offers Christ to poor sinners that they may find rest, and that without money and without price. In this expanded work from a sermon that Harrison delivered faithfully to his church, he expounds Matthew 22:2-14, “The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son…” He divides the teaching, as all good puritan preachers were accustomed to do, into three sections. He first opens the text, then provides the doctrine of the text, and then applies the text. His main doctrine, faithfully developed, is that God in and by the Gospel freely offers Jesus Christ, with all the benefits of his death, to all that are willing to come to him and receive him on Gospel-terms. As much as this work is a plea to sinners on behalf of Jesus Christ, ministers of the Gospel today, even those of the reformed flavor, would do well to listen to Harrison, and learn of him in his presentation. If more preachers would follow his doctrine, style and fervor, the Spirit would look kindly on such endeavors, and there would be more Christians today made by God’s grace, and for Christ’s glory. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Reborn of Crisis

release date: Aug 09, 2020
Reborn of Crisis
This book examines the dominant popular culture convention of the superhero, situated within the most significant global event of the last 20 years. Exploring the explosion of the superhero genre post-9/11, it sheds fresh light on the manner in which American society has processed and continues to process the trauma from the terrorist attacks. Beginning with the development of Batman in comics, television, and film, the authors offer studies of popular films including Iron Man, Captain America, The X-Men, Black Panther, and Wonder Woman, revealing the ways in which these texts meditate upon the events and aftermath of 9/11 and challenge the dominant hyper-patriotic narrative that emerged in response to the attacks. A study of the superhero genre’s capacity to unpack complex global interplays that question America’s foreign policy actions and the white, militarized masculinity that has characterized major discourses following 9/11, this volume explores the engagement of superhero films with issues of authority, patriotism, war, morals, race, gender, surveillance, the military industrial complex, and American political and social identities. As such, it will appeal to scholars and students of cultural and media studies, film studies, sociology, politics, and American studies.

On the Road to Victory

release date: Feb 19, 2020
On the Road to Victory
The story of a revolution in moving troops and supplies: “A rare gem that will fill a gap in your World War I library. Highly recommended.” —Indy Squadron Dispatch The Great War produced many innovations, in particular the spectacular development by the British and French armies of motor transport. The age-old problem of moving soldiers and their supplies was no different in 1914 than it had been some 2,400 years ago, when the great Chinese military thinker Sun Tzu informed his readers that the further an army marched into enemy territory, the more the cost of transport increased, even to the point that more supplies were consumed by the transportation of men and their horses than was delivered to the troops. Using many previously unpublished illustrations, including artists’ impressions, this book tells the story of the men and women who made motor transport work for the victorious British Army on the Western Front, so that in 1918, the humble lorry did indeed help propel the British Army forward on the road to victory.

Killing a Colored Man's Pedigree

release date: Mar 15, 2019
Killing a Colored Man's Pedigree
Killing a Colored Man''s Pedigree is a provocative look at why it is neither cool nor an honor to be a "baby mama." As Harrison compellingly argues, it does not take a village to raise a child; it only takes two married parents. This confrontational in-depth look at the numbers documenting the increased poverty and violent crime blacks are experiencing is proof to Michael Harrison that black American''s chickens have come home to roost and that black America is reaping what it has sown for decades. Required reading for anyone who wants to understand the problems plaguing the black community, Killing a Colored Man''s Pedigree asks questions and provides answers about issues that are seldom if ever discussed because of political correctness. Things you''ll learn: - How the high unmarried birthrate among blacks relates to the poverty and crime that plague large parts of the black community and how, as Harrison argues, it may permanently destroy black culture in America - Clinical and scientific research that explains the importance and presence of the alpha male role model, which is woefully absent for the majority of young blacks - How our culture at large, both black and white, tends to worship "baby mamas" and "bad boy black actors," sports stars, musicians, rappers, and the like and how this utterly exacerbates the problem - How modern culture encourages what Harrison terms a "phony victim status" in the black community (which trickles down into poor white culture), particularly among unwed black mothers - How corrupt black politicians whose personal agendas far outweigh the greater good have taken over black leadership and are leading black America astray - Practical solutions to these problems using education, media, and community outreach programs - Harrison''s dream of starting a national grass roots effort promoting greater personal responsibility, which could reverse this self-destructive trend and lead to a healthier black community and greater prosperity for all Ringing with passion, anecdotes, and a poignant plea for black America to do an all-around better job of behaving itself and raising kids, Harrison ultimately argues for greater responsibility as the answer to the pervasive problems facing the black community.

High Wood

release date: Jun 30, 2016
High Wood
Bois de Fourcaux, a luxuriant woodland covering 75 acres, set in the area of the battlefields of the Somme, dominates the surrounding landscape today, as it did in the summer of the year 1916. Known to the British Army as High Wood, the invading Germans had occupied the wood as it proved to be a natural field fortification and a menace that had to be neutralized if the British were to find a way forward in their attempts to breach the trench systems of the German Army and break out into the Green Fields Beyond. This insightful publication will take the battlefield visitor, and also those who are unable to visit the site, on a journey through the history of the battles for High Wood and its environs. It covers the most significant dates in the British Armys struggle to eject the invader and the Germans determination to hold that which they considered to be their new National Frontier. This is the story of the largely amateur British Army of 1916. Lessons were learned in the roaring furnace of the Somme that would transform the fighting ability of the British irrevocably: High Wood was at the epicentre of that learning process. The book contains detailed maps from the time of the High Wood battles using the excellent British Trench maps and, importantly, an explanation on the use of the numbered grid system, which enables the visitor to locate, to within 5 yards, the site of an action that took place 100 years ago. Photographs are also included to enhance the visitor experience. Join us for the journey

Christ’s Righteousness Imputed, the Saint’s Surest Plea for Eternal Life

release date: Jun 27, 2016
Christ’s Righteousness Imputed, the Saint’s Surest Plea for Eternal Life
Is the doctrine of justification important for today’s church? Assuredly and emphatically, YES. Harrison covers this topic in six points beginning with his main text of Isaiah 45:24-25, “Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength,” etc. He covers, 1. Who are the people that shall be made partakers of this blessed privilege of justification? 2. The nature of justification; what it is. 3. What that righteousness is, for, and by which we are justified at God’s judgment seat. 4. The time when God’s children are made partakers of this blessed privilege. 5. How are we justified by faith? 6. Objections against the doctrine of justification answered. And finally he gives the reader an application. Harrison felt the critical need for his congregation to understand that the righteousness, by and for which, we are esteemed righteous at God’s judgment seat is only available through Jesus Christ. He biblically proves that it is the active and passive obedience of Jesus Christ, performed by him in our stead, imputed to us, and received only by faith, that gives us the privilege of the doctrine of justification. Harrison’s work is a breath of theological fresh air, and it should be to every true believer who ponders the biblical nature of this most important doctrine. If you stand, on the Day of Judgment, before the judgment seat of God, in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, you will have wrapped around you the saint’s surest and only plea for pardon and eternal life. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

James Wilson

release date: Jan 01, 2016
James Wilson
James Wilson''s life is an entry point into the events of the latter half of the 18th century and the impact of the Scottish Enlightenment on American society, discourse, and government. Previous research has focused, primarily, on his tenure as a member of the first Supreme Court of the United States and his time teaching law at the University of Pennsylvania. This work is not an attempt to present a complete biography, instead, it examines several key points in his life and afterwards. The year 1768 is pivotal to any reassessment of James Wilson''s contributions. He worked with William White on The Visitant. This series provides insights into the literature culture of 1760s Philadelphia and how it fits within the larger framework of the Enlightenment. In the latter half of 1768, Wilson wrote, "Considerations on the Nature and Extent of the Legislative Authority of the British Parliament." Though groundbreaking, it was not published until 1774. This hesitation will be explained within the broader context of his career and social relations. His contributions to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and time as a Supreme Court Justice will be examined. As a federal justice riding circuit, Wilson and his colleagues were the face of the new federal government for many Americans. In the early years of the twentieth century, James Wilson''s ideas were resurrected by leaders, particularly President Theodore Roosevelt and industrialist Andrew Carnegie, to justify expansion of federal powers. The attention garnered by the movement of Wilson''s remains from Edenton to Philadelphia in November of 1906 is singularly unique for a founding father and demands further attention. Further, a new Wilson/Roosevelt Doctrine of interpretation of the Constitution appeared in legal and political science textbooks until the New Deal. James Wilson''s story had no Hollywood ending. His is a very human story of a Scottish immigrant who experienced success and acclaim for his public activities, but in his personal affairs, and particularly financial life, he experienced great successes and deep lows worthy of a Greek tragedy. His quest for financial security led to land speculation, debt, and pursuit by his creditors.

Decoupling 2

Decoupling 2
This report explores technological possibilities and opportunities for developing and developed countries to accelerate decoupling and reap environmental and economic benefits of increased resource productivity. It examines policy options successful in helping different countries improve resource productivity in various sectors of their economy, avoiding negative impacts on the environment. It does not seem possible for a global economy based on the current unsustainable patterns of resource use to continue into the future. Economic consequences of these patterns are already apparent in increases in resource prices, increased price volatility and disruption of environmental systems. The environment impacts are also leading to potentially irreversible changes to the world''s ecosystems, often with direct effects on people and the economy - for example: damage to health, water shortages, loss of fish stocks or increased storm damage. This report shows that much of the policy design ''know-how'' needed to achieve decoupling is present in terms of legislation, incentive systems, and institutional reform. Many countries have tried these out with tangible results, encouraging others to study and where appropriate replicate and scale up such practices and successes

Brownian Models of Performance and Control

Brownian Models of Performance and Control
Direct and to the point, this book from one of the field''s leaders covers Brownian motion and stochastic calculus at the graduate level, and illustrates the use of that theory in various application domains, emphasizing business and economics. The mathematical development is narrowly focused and briskly paced, with many concrete calculations and a minimum of abstract notation. The applications discussed include: the role of reflected Brownian motion as a storage model, queuing model, or inventory model; optimal stopping problems for Brownian motion, including the influential McDonald-Siegel investment model; optimal control of Brownian motion via barrier policies, including optimal control of Brownian storage systems; and Brownian models of dynamic inference, also called Brownian learning models or Brownian filtering models.

Mathematics for Economics and Finance

release date: Mar 31, 2011
Mathematics for Economics and Finance
The aim of this book is to bring students of economics and finance who have only an introductory background in mathematics up to a quite advanced level in the subject, thus preparing them for the core mathematical demands of econometrics, economic theory, quantitative finance and mathematical economics, which they are likely to encounter in their final-year courses and beyond. The level of the book will also be useful for those embarking on the first year of their graduate studies in Business, Economics or Finance. The book also serves as an introduction to quantitative economics and finance for mathematics students at undergraduate level and above. In recent years, mathematics graduates have been increasingly expected to have skills in practical subjects such as economics and finance, just as economics graduates have been expected to have an increasingly strong grounding in mathematics. The authors avoid the pitfalls of many texts that become too theoretical. The use of mathematical methods in the real world is never lost sight of and quantitative analysis is brought to bear on a variety of topics including foreign exchange rates and other macro level issues.

Cents and Sustainability

release date: Sep 23, 2010
Cents and Sustainability
Cents and Sustainability is a clear-sighted response to the 1987 call by Dr Gro Brundtland in Our Common Future to achieve a new era of economic growth that is ''forceful and at the same time socially and environmentally sustainable''. The Brundtland Report argued that not only was it achievable, but that it was an urgent imperative in order to achieve a transition to sustainable development while significantly reducing poverty and driving ''clean and green'' investment. With some still arguing for significantly slowing economic growth in order to reduce pressures on the environment, this new book, Cents and Sustainability, shows that it is possible to reconcile the need for economic growth and environmental sustainability through a strategy to decouple economic growth from environmental pressures, combined with a renewed commitment to achieve significant environmental restoration and poverty reduction. Beginning with a brief overview of some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, the book then explains ''decoupling theory'', overviews a number of factors that can undermine and even block efforts to decouple in both developed and developing countries, and then discusses a number of key considerations to assist the development of national ''decoupling strategies''. The book then focuses on presenting evidence to support greater action, not just on climate change, but also on decoupling economic growth from the loss of biodiversity and the deterioration of natural systems, freshwater extraction, waste production, and air pollution. In the lead up to the 2012 United Nations Earth Summit and beyond, Cents and Sustainability will be a crucial guide to inform and assist nations to develop strategies to significantly reduce environmental pressures, strengthen their economy, create jobs and reduce poverty. ''I commend the team from The Natural Edge Project and their partners for undertaking to develop a response to ''Our Common Future'' to mark its 20th anniversary.'' Dr Gro Brundtland.
