Global climate change will increase the risk of conflict over shared international freshwater resources. Treaties and other cross-border agreements can help reduce those risks, but existing agreements are inadequate for dealing with the impacts of climate change. This analysis for the United Nations identifies these growing risks and proposes methods for reducing them.

This thesis will demonstrate that the pursuit of a ''comic aesthetic'' in superhero films is deployed through an ''aesthetic of artifice.'' This thesis will examine Batman, (1989), Dick Tracy (1990), The Crow (1994), and The Shadow (1995) and compare the elements of film production with examples of pages and panels taken from comic books and comic strips to establish the influence of the comic medium on the films. I will also analyse Tank Girl (1995), Hulk (2003), Unbreakable (2000), and Batman: the movie (1966), because each has a different approach to developing the style of a comic. With all of these films I address the argument that an ''aesthetic of artifice'' is a combination of formal strategies that are used in these films as a stylistic strategy for overcoming the ontological differences between these two media. I will examine the creation of artificial cinematic worlds using production design, the use of framing and composition to create ''panelling'' that mimics panels in comics, ''cartooning'' as a form of artifice in the depiction of characters and actions, as well as the framing and posing of the superheroes. Although other researchers have examined the relationship between comics and the cinema, little attention has been paid to the influence of superhero comics on films with the same characters. This thesis addresses the need of understanding the formal relationship between superhero films and comics by demonstrating the development of a ''comic aesthetic.''

Parents of children with holoprosencephaly often have been told that their children will die within days or weeks. When this does not happen, they are distrustful of the information they have received and want to know what they can really expect and how they can cope with the many problems these children have. We have recorded our experiences and gleanings from the literature with regard to survival and performance of these children. Survival data were obtained from 62 cases of alobar holoprosencephaly known to us or to our colleagues. Performance data were obtained on 35 survivors, by direct examination and/or detailed parent questionnaires and interviews.
