Bouvard and Pécuchet - Flaubert
"Bouvard and Pécuchet" is one of Gustave Flaubert''s most well-known works. With its meticulously crafted sentences and precise words, the novel has endured the test of time without losing its impact and expressive power. The narrative focuses on two credulous characters, the copyists, and friends, Bouvard and Pécuchet, who, upon receiving an inheritance, decide to swap Paris for life in the countryside. The result is a series of mishaps, narrated with refined humor and laden with criticism. The structure of the narrative depicts the very obsession with the pursuit of truth as a wheel spinning in vain, amusingly and pathetically involving its two protagonists and all the encyclopedic knowledge of the 19th century. The work " Bouvard and Pécuchet" is part of the famous collection: "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die."

Madame Bovary Illustrated
Seven years ago, the incomparable Lydia Davis brought us an award- winning, rapturously reviewed new translation of Marcel Proust''s Swann''s Way that was hailed as "clear and true to the music of the original" (Los Angeles Times) and "a work of creation in its own right" (Claire Messud, Newsday). Now she turns her gifts to the book that defined the novel as an art form. When Emma Rouault marries dull, provincial doctor Charles Bovary, her dreams of an elegant and passionate life crumble. She escapes into sentimental novels but finds her fantasies dashed by the tedium of her days. Motherhood proves to be a burden; religion is only a brief distraction. She spends lavishly and embarks on a series of disappointing affairs. Soon heartbroken and crippled by debts, Emma takes drastic action with tragic consequences for her husband and daughter. When published in 1857, Madame Bovary was embraced by bourgeois women who claimed it spoke to the frustrations of their lives. Davis''s landmark translation gives new life in English to Flaubert''s masterwork.

Madame Bovary
Madame Bovary is the debut novel of French writer Gustave Flaubert, published in 1856. The eponymous character lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. When the novel was first serialized in La Revue de Paris between 1 October 1856 and 15 December 1856, public prosecutors attacked the novel for obscenity. The resulting trial in January 1857 made the story notorious. After Flaubert''s acquittal on 7 February 1857, Madame Bovary became a bestseller in April 1857 when it was published in two volumes. A seminal work of literary realism, the novel is now considered Flaubert''s masterpiece, and one of the most influential literary works in history. The British critic James Wood writes: "Flaubert established, for good or ill, what most readers think of as modern realist narration, and his influence is almost too familiar to be visible."About Flaubert: Gustave Flaubert was born December 12, 1821, in Rouen, France, and died May 8, 1880. He was the fourth child of a distinguished doctor who was the head of the hospital in that city. Gustave was a sensitive and quiet boy; he read a lot, and since the family lived in a house on the hospital grounds, he early gained a knowledge of scientific techniques and ideas. He attended a secondary school in Rouen, and in 1841 was sent, against his will, to study law in Paris. In the capital he made new friends and moved in literary circles. His talent for writing was stimulated by these experiences. In 1844, Flaubert became the victim of a serious nervous illness, which cannot be identified precisely, but which was probably related to epilepsy

Gustave Flaubert - Salammbo
An historical novel that interweaves historical and fictional characters. The action takes place immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt against Carthage in the third century BC. This book, which Flaubert researched painstakingly, is largely an exercise in sensuous and violent exoticism. The Carthaginian costumes described therein even left traces on the fashions of the time. Nevertheless, in spite of its classic status in France, it is practically unknown today among English-speakers.

Madame Bovary By Gustave Flaubert
We were in class when the head-master came in, followed by a "new fellow," not wearing the school uniform, and a school servant carrying a large desk. Those who had been asleep woke up, and every one rose as if just surprised at his work. The head-master made a sign to us to sit down. Then, turning to the class-master, he said to him in a low voice— "Monsieur Roger, here is a pupil whom I recommend to your care; he''ll be in the second. If his work and conduct are satisfactory, he will go into one of the upper classes, as becomes his age." The "new fellow," standing in the corner behind the door so that he could hardly be seen, was a country lad of about fifteen, and taller than any of us. His hair was cut square on his forehead like a village chorister''s; he looked reliable, but very ill at ease. Although he was not broad-shouldered, his short school jacket of green cloth with black buttons must have been tight about the arm-holes, and showed at the opening of the cuffs red wrists accustomed to being bare. His legs, in blue stockings, looked out from beneath yellow trousers, drawn tight by braces, He wore stout, ill-cleaned, hob-nailed boots.

Madame Bovary (1857)
Madame Bovary (1857) By Gustave Flaubert Flaubert''s first and much debated novel, which took him six years to write, and was threatened with legal extinction when it appeared in 1857, here it appears in an admirable version by the late Eleanor Marx-Aveling. Despite the early antagonism it aroused on moral grounds, it has been called one of the most salutary novels ever written. Henry James even said it might have been conceived as a Sunday-School tract, and the fate of Mme. Bovary, that ''would-be sybarite without a soul, '' bears him out. But all critics of the art of fiction are agreed that in form and finish Bovary is one of the world''s greatest novels. ''It remains, '' says Mr. Peter Lubbock in The Craft of Fiction, ''perpetually the novel of all novels which the criticism of fiction cannot over look as soon as ever we speak of the principles of the art, we must be prepared to engage with Flauber
