Planet Earth, Past and Present

release date: Oct 18, 2023
Planet Earth, Past and Present
The Earth is not the world it once was, and it is not the world it will always be. This book describes the exciting, complex, and occasionally baffling history of our own planet. Over the course of its 4.5 billion years, Earth has undergone astonishing changes to its surface and atmosphere, at times more closely resembling other planets in our Solar System than the habitable, teeming biosphere of today. Through these otherworldly analogs, author-illustrator Michael Carroll teaches readers about different aspects of our own planet’s past. Our nearest cosmic neighbor, Venus, offers insights into Earth’s own young atmosphere and surface, while Saturn’s moon Titan may offer a window into the genesis of life on Earth. Planet Earth, Past and Present explores these and many more connections. Original art accompanies each chapter, depicting major stages of the Earth’s evolution and providing vivid comparisons to other planets or moons. Come along on this journey through the Solar System—a journey that ultimately leads us home.

Vatican II & the Hermeneutic of Deification

release date: Aug 15, 2023
Vatican II & the Hermeneutic of Deification
This book sets out conclusive evidence that the teaching of the three stages and three conversions of the spiritual life are the correct interpretation, and true hermeneutic of continuity, pertaining to the Universal Call to Holiness, as requested in the Documents of Vatican II. As such, it is the Doctrine of Acquiring Christian Perfection, which is a phrase written in the Council Documents, but so far this phrase has not been explained to the laity in relation to the Second Vatican Council. It is in effect, the Hermeneutic of Deification. This work also contains practical teachings for those unfamiliar with the three-fold path. There has been a clarion call from Cardinal Sarah and Cardinal Burke for this generation to finally provide correct interpretations of what the Documents of Vatican II actually requested. As such, this work illuminates key teachings concerning the 2000-year-old tradition of the Three Stages and Three Conversions of the Spiritual Life, as evidenced from scripture, the doctors of the Church, mystical theologians, & the Summa Theologica. This evidence has subsequently been cross referenced with the documents of the Second Vatican Council, the Catechism, and recent papal documents. As such this work is epiphanic in that it finally applies the authentic traditional spirituality of the Church Fathers into the life of the Church by answering Vatican II''s call for Christian perfection. By finally cross referencing the traditional spiritual language with the conciliar documents it presents a true hermeneutic of continuity, and the only solution to reignite spiritual vitality within the Church, and therefore the Universal Call to Holiness. The Three Stages and Three Conversions of the Spiritual Life are more than just a spiritual teaching. This is because they teach us how to restore the Divine Order. The Divine Order supersedes all orders. It heals man''s imperfection and replaces it with God''s perfection. Schism, and more recently confusion, have come about within the Church, and worldwide the original perfection has been replaced by that which was not in the original design. This has caused a crisis within the Church, the world, and the family. This Divine Order was created by God and involves all baptised Catholics practicing ''the way of perfection''. It is the spirituality of the Church in which all spiritualities are contained. This perfect order can be formed in all those who wish to co-operate with actual and sanctifying grace, so that the perfection of charity can be practiced more abundantly throughout the world. It efficaciously draws the Church deeper into true discipleship, so as to follow Christ with one mind and one heart, from the beginning to the end. We thus hear the words of Our Lord, ''Be you perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect''. Whilst many Church initiatives have concentrated on what is known as the First Conversion, which takes place at the beginning of the spiritual journey, this work now looks at the true nature of the spiritual life and moves us forward to the Second and Third Conversions. Without a Christian moving through the Second Conversion it is not possible to love both God and neighbour with the Christian perfection that is requested fifty-seven times in the Documents of the Second Vatican Council. This Second Conversion is also highlighted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Catholics often state that the three ways of the spiritual life follow on from the kerygmatic stage, but now it is time to finally set forth this reality. The antidote to the current crisis in the Church is to state that the future vitality of the Catholic Church lies in the Three Stages and Conversions of the Spiritual Life. Only here do we discover an intrinsic formation in the Divine Order of Christian perfection, which above all leads us to the perfection of charity and love of neighbour, as was repeatedly requested in the documents of the Second Vatican Coun

Edmund White’s A Boy’s Own Story: The Graphic Novel

release date: Mar 29, 2023
Edmund White’s A Boy’s Own Story: The Graphic Novel
A landmark American novel, hailed by the New York Times as J.D. Salinger crossed with Oscar Wilde, is masterfully reimagined as a timeless graphic novel. A Boy’s Own Story is a now-classic coming-of-age story, but with a twist: the young protagonist is growing up gay during one of the most oppressive periods in American history. Set in the time and place of author Edmund White’s adolescence, the Midwest of the 1950s, the novel became an immediate bestseller and, for many readers, was not merely about gay identity but the pain of being a child in a fractured family while looking for love in an anything-but-stable world. And yet the book quickly contributed to the literature of empowerment that grew out of the Stonewall riots and subsequent gay rights era. Readers are still swept up in the main character’s thoughts and dry humor, and many today remain shocked by the sexually confessional, and bold, nature of his revelations, his humorous observations, the comic situations and scenes the strangely erudite youthful narrator describes, the tenderness of his loneliness, and the vivid aching of his imagination. A Boy’s Own Story is lyrical, witty, unabashed, and authentic. Now, to bring this landmark novel to new life for today’s readers, White is joined by co-writers Brian Alessandro and Michael Carroll and artist Igor Karash for a stunning graphic novel interpretation. The poetic nuances of White’s language float across sumptuously painted panels that evoke 1950s Cincinnati, 1980s Paris, and every dreamlike moment in between. The result is a creative adaptation, in collaboration with Closure Creative, of the original 1982 A Boy’s Own Story with additional personal and historical elements from the authors’ lives.

The South Side of Queen

The South Side of Queen
Set in the first half of the twentieth century in Toronto and framed as a murder mystery, the book is the saga of two burlesque theatres (the Roxy and Casino) and the family that owned and operated them. In 1935, the proprietor and the family patriarch, Avner Appleby was murdered - one of Toronto''s unsolved homicides. The Casino opened in 1936, changing its program from burlesque to vaudeville and family entertainment acts several times before closing in the early 60s. Notable burlesque performers included such greats as strippers Sally Rand, Ann Corio, and Gypsy Rose Lee, as well as funnymen Red Buttons, Phil Silvers, Henry Youngman, Chico Marx, and The Three Stooges. Big-name acts featured Victor Borge, Pearl Bailey, Eartha Kittening, The Mills Brothers, Johnnie Ray, Louis Armstrong, and Rudy Vallee. The author, a retired neurologist, is the grandson of the Avner Appleby and the book traces the histories of his family and the two theatres.

La face cachée de l'univers

release date: Jan 01, 2022

Ice Worlds of the Solar System

release date: Oct 23, 2019
Ice Worlds of the Solar System
Although there is a chance that certain planets may be habitable for life, the moons of planets might have even more to offer. The icy moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune have taught us important lessons about new volcanic forms—cryovolcanism—and the bizarre landscapes sculpted by those erupting geysers. Glaciers, ice mountains, and vast canyons mold the faces of these worlds of ice and thunder. Yet, many ice moons and dwarf planets, including Ceres and Pluto, are in fact sea worlds, hiding deep oceans beneath their ice crusts. This book explores the frozen worlds beyond Mars, delving into the interior forces of migrating ice diapirs, seafloor volcanism and tidal friction, which help form the landscapes found above and biologically friendly environs buried below. It covers the latest research in the field and includes interviews with today’s foremost authorities, including astrobiologists Chris McKay (NASA Ames), Ralph Lorenz (Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory) and Karl Mitchell (Jet Propulsion Laboratory). Original art by the author enhances the concepts explored in the text, recreating some of the most remarkable landscapes on icy planets and moons.

Antarctica: Earth's Own Ice World
In 2016, scientist Rosaly Lopes and artist Michael Carroll teamed up as fellows of the National Science Foundation to travel to Mount Erebus, the world’s southernmost active volcano in Antarctica. The logistics of getting there and complex operations of Antarctica''s McMurdo Station echo the kinds of strategies that future explorers will undertake as they set up settlements on Mars and beyond. This exciting popular-level book explores the arduous environment of Antarctica and how it is similar to other icy worlds in the Solar System. The bulk of this story delves into Antarctica’s infrastructure, exploration, and remote camps, culminating on the summit of Erebus. There, the authors explored the caves and ice towers on the volcano’s flanks, taking photographs and generating original art depicting scenes in Antarctica and terrestrial analogs on other planets and moons. Readers will see an intimate side of Mount Erebus and Antarctica while surveying the region’s history, exploration, geology, and volcanology, which includes research funded by the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Programs. Richly illustrated with photographs and stunning paintings showcasing the beauty of the harsh continent, the book captures the spirit and splendor of the authors’ journey to Erebus.

Greece
''If in the library of your house you do not have the works of the ancient Greek writers then you have a house with no light'' -George Bernard Shaw There is so much in the modern world which has its origins in Greece, most notably language and literature. As Shelley once said, ''We are all Greeks''. This small, rugged, sea-girt country has the longest written history in Europe. Her myths and legends, so deeply embedded in Western consciousness, and her sublime landscapes, so infused with history, have been muse for writers, artists and travellers for millennia. Travelling from Athens to the scattered islands of the Ionian and Aegean seas, the words of literary titans in the West echo through the centuries: from Homer and Plato to Byron, Flaubert and Twain; Henry Miller to John Fowles; the Durrells to Patrick Leigh Fermor and Cavafy, Kazantzakis and Seferis. Their luminous portraits of Greece - poignant, provocative, always entertaining - enrich our own experiences of the country and shed light on a dramatic and often tragic past.
