Surveillance Law, Data Retention and Human Rights

release date: Sep 16, 2024
Surveillance Law, Data Retention and Human Rights
This book analyses the compatibility of data retention in the UK with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The increase in the use of modern technology has led to an explosion of generated data and, with that, a greater interest from law enforcement and intelligence agencies. In the early 2000s, data retention laws were introduced into the UK, and across the European Union (EU). This was met by domestic challenges before national courts, until a seminal ruling by the Court of Justice in the European Union (CJEU) ruled that indiscriminate data retention was incompatible with EU law. Since then, however, the CJEU has revised its position and made certain concessions, particularly under the guise of national security. This book focuses on data retention in the UK with the principal aim of examining compatibility with the ECHR. This is explored through a variety of ways including providing an account of democracy and why secret surveillance poses a threat to it, a history of data retention, assessing the seriousness that data retention poses to fundamental rights, the collection of rights that are affected by data retention which are crucial for a functioning democracy, the implications of who can be obligated to retain (and what to retain), the idea that data retention is a form of surveillance and ultimately, with all things considered, whether this is compatible with the ECHR. The work will be an invaluable resource for students, academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of privacy, human rights law and surveillance.

Essays on the Economics of Mental Illness and Belief Formation

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Essays on the Economics of Mental Illness and Belief Formation
This thesis consists of three chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 study questions relating to the economics of mental illness, while Chapter 3 contributes to the literature on the behavioral economics of belief formation. The first chapter studies why people who live in poverty are disproportionately affected by mental illness. Gautam Rao, Frank Schilbach, Vikram Patel and I review the interdisciplinary evidence of the bidirectional causal relationship between poverty and common mental illnesses---depression and anxiety---and the underlying mechanisms. Our review shows that mental illness reduces employment and therefore income and that psychological interventions generate economic gains. Similarly, negative economic shocks cause mental illness, and anti-poverty programs, such as cash transfers, improve mental health. A crucial step toward the design of effective policies is to better understand the mechanisms underlying these causal effects. In the second chapter, I study discrimination against people with common mental illnesses in labor market settings -- one important mechanism through which mental illness may (indirectly) cause lower employment and income. In an online experiment, I find that people pay to avoid depressed or anxious coworkers in a simple communication-based problem-solving task---paying as much to avoid them as they do to work with the college-educated. A model of earnings-maximizing statistical discrimination with correct beliefs cannot explain these preferences: depressed or anxious coworkers are equally productive when exogenously assigned. Instead, I find evidence that discrimination is driven by incorrect beliefs about such coworkers as well as an increase in costly effort when working with them. A major motivation for tackling discrimination is often to encourage revelation of mental illness (thereby perhaps improving access to treatment or support); however, I find that people pay to hide mental illness in my setting even when insulated from rejection or any financial consequence of discrimination. In the third chapter of my thesis, John Conlon, Malavika Mani, Gautam Rao, Frank Schilbach and I study social learning between spouses using an experiment in Chennai, India. We vary whether individuals discover information themselves or must instead learn what their spouse discovered via a discussion. Women treat their `own' and their husband's information the same. In sharp contrast, men's beliefs respond less than half as much to information that was discovered by their wife. This is not due to a lack of communication: husbands put less weight on their wife's signals even when perfectly informed of them. In a second experiment, when paired with mixed- and same-gender strangers, both men and women heavily discount their teammate's information relative to their own. We conclude that people have a tendency to underweight others' information relative to their own. The marital context creates a countervailing force for women, resulting in a gender difference in learning (only) in the household.

Riddle Creek is really Ridley, and is a true-enough stream, flowing through one of the most charming regions in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The railroad trestle which plays such an important part in the first chapter forms a picturesque feature of the landscape, in full view of a home where I was wont to spend many a joyous holiday-time and which I had in mind whenever I mentioned the Pellery."

A Man Like Moses Walking In the Path of Joseph
Everyone has a story to tell. It doesn't matter what nation, town, city or country. Everyone has a story to tell. It doesn't matter whether you are rich or poor, young or old. No matter the race. Everyone has a story to tell. Stories have been written, told and passed along starting from the beginning of time. Some had truth, many had untruth and others had a little of both. Numerous stories that were told have been looked upon as fairy tales or old folk tales but none-the-less, telling stories was a form of entertainment for many grownups and exciting story times for countless children who dared not to go to bed without hearing one or two of the stories. Jesus, even in the bible days, told stories or parables that had powerful meanings to the by standers. These stories were told to the hearers to help them better understand life and its many wonders. I have come to enjoy a good story or two myself and I'm sure many of you have too.

Defiance has become the flash point for Humanity's First Contact War. A short story and introduction to the MissionSRX universe.1. Confessions of the First WarIn the near future, humanity has overcome the bonds of earth and begun to explore the galaxy. The alien first contact was everything the world's greatest scholars could have hoped for; the Aquillians were advanced, intelligent and peaceful until ships and colonies turned up missing. Having previously no military capacity, the alien's ability to reverse engineer humankind's technologies of war proved to be a great equalizer. The aliens grew increasingly brazen, culminating in a series of devastating attacks on the populations of earth. It quickly became clear that the military leaders had greatly underestimated their numbers, proficiency, and reach throughout the galaxy.Commander Prime Jefferson Grant has nothing left to lose. Left alone without a home or family, he enlists in the United Space Corps to give the only thing he has left: His life. To avenge the lost he must carve a path of destruction beyond compare to secure humanity's future. From the Earth to the stars, across countless alien battlefields, the war must be fought. To succeed, Grant must take a descent into madness, give up all that he knew, and realize his destiny as a hero or a monster. The enemy is coming. Is the will of one soldier enough to save it?2. Ephemeral SolaceHumanity's First Intergalactic War is over but only after testing the resolve, patience and skill of a civilization. The Aquillians have been defeated, but their threat has not been eliminated.Commander Prime Jefferson Grant's life has been spared, but only in exchange for a life of servitude. No sooner had the dust settled and the dead buried before the last of the Aquillians would emerge. Allied with a strange, new enemy and armed to the teeth, these are not the creatures that allowed their race to be destroyed by the humans in years past. They're attacking Earth and her colonies without method or mercy, leaving the leaders of the United Space Corps scrambling to react. The best hope lies with the soldiers, tradesmen and service members in the field, thrown into the fire to survive or otherwise.Driven by forces he does not understand, Commander Prime Grant must lead his forces through the assault, to a goal even he doesn't believe. 3. Deep UnknownLeft on the drift after escaping Earth, the crew of a single ship awakes amidst an alien civilization with an engrossed interest in their success and survival. Realizing a purpose greater than any of them can individually understand, the chosen few take up their call to save both races from annihilation. With every strike against the darkness, the questions pile up, the perfect become fallible and the trusted seek betrayal. Placing grievances aside, Commander Grant along with his team must stand united not just for humanity, but for all life in the universe.4. Commander's WrathCommander Grant stands at the helm of the most powerful interstellar armada ever assembled; a force measuring in the thousands stands ready to defend earth and her new allies. Unfortunately, their greatest weapon system, an immense capital starship, has been compromised, leaving them scrambling to react. Unable to execute their mission across the stars without their most powerful asset, the team must scour the galaxy for its trail if they are to have any hope of defeating the brutal alien menace.

Deep Unknown
And behold the children reached into the darkness, and drew those who are pure into our sky. In our stead, they did defend us, wrapped in the armor of our spirit and wielding the swords of our fathers. Their bodies dust, their souls resolute; with the blessing of The One we shall not perish from the Universe. Commander Grant and his crew have escaped from Earth into deep space, dragging behind them a fleet of invading alien ships in a desperate attempt to give humanity's beleaguered defenses a chance to regroup. With their enemy closing in, they plunge headlong into the abyss and find themselves on the far side of the universe, face to face with an oddly familiar alien ally who is intently interested in their survival. The Lyran race has spent millennia conquering the stars but have finally met a foe which they cannot face. They have not been idle, however, and have made ready for the time when a warrior would emerge from the darkness and lead their civilization to victory. But nothing in war is as simple as it seems.

Attachment Styles and Trust Propensity in Females with Borderline Personality Disorder

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Attachment Styles and Trust Propensity in Females with Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most frequently encountered and complex disorders in mental health care. Interpersonal impairment is a central issue for individuals with BPD. This complex disorder has received negative stigma along with historically more females than males receiving this diagnosis (Linehan, 1993). Therefore, this study examined a clinical sample of 30 females diagnosed with BPD. Through the collection of data this study used the following measures: a basic demographic questionnaire gathering specific age, ethnicity, current relationship status, parental relationship status, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR; Brennan, Clark & Shaver, 1998), and the Propensity to Trust Scale (PTS; Frazier, Johnson, & Fainshmidt, 2013). The data was evaluated through descriptive statistics, a Shapiro-Wilk's Test of Normality, a Kurkal-Wallis H test, and a Spearman's rho correlation. Two tailed Cronbach's a=.05 level was used as the significance standard for all statistical procedures. As hypothesized, rs(28) = -.375, p = .041, the data indicated a significant negative correlation between avoidance and propensity to trust in females with BPD. Additionally, congruent with previous meta-analytic research findings (Agrawal, Gunderson, Holmes, & Lyons-Ruth, 2004), the majority of participants 93% reported an insecure style of attachment with preoccupied as the most frequent style of attachment reported. The following manuscript examines attachment styles and propensity to trust in females with BPD; clinical implications and future research are discussed.

O Grande Livro das Coisas Horríveis

release date: Jun 01, 2013

Come confrontare misfatti avvenuti in tempi e contesti tanto diversi?

Atrocities: The 100 Deadliest Episodes in Human History
“An amusing (really) account of the murderous ways of despots, slave traders, blundering royals, gladiators and assorted hordes.”—New York Times Evangelists of human progress meet their opposite in Matthew White’s epic examination of history’s one hundred most violent events, or, in White’s piquant phrasing, “the numbers that people want to argue about.” Reaching back to the Second Persian War in 480 BCE and moving chronologically through history, White surrounds hard facts (time and place) and succinct takeaways (who usually gets the blame?) with lively military, social, and political histories.

The Great Big Book of Horrible Things

release date: Oct 25, 2011
The Great Big Book of Horrible Things
A compulsively readable and utterly original account of world history—from an atrocitologist’s point of view. Evangelists of human progress meet their opposite in Matthew White's epic examination of history's one hundred most violent events, or, in White's piquant phrasing, "the numbers that people want to argue about." Reaching back to 480 BCE's second Persian War, White moves chronologically through history to this century's war in the Congo and devotes chapters to each event, where he surrounds hard facts (time and place) and succinct takeaways (who usually gets the blame?) with lively military, social, and political histories. With the eye of a seasoned statistician, White assigns each entry a ranking based on body count, and in doing so he gives voice to the suffering of ordinary people that, inexorably, has defined every historical epoch. By turns droll, insightful, matter-of-fact, and ultimately sympathetic to those who died, The Great Big Book of Horrible Things gives readers a chance to reach their own conclusions while offering a stark reminder of the darkness of the human heart.

Atrocitology

release date: Oct 20, 2011
Atrocitology
Was the twentieth century the most violent in history? Are religions or tyrants, capitalism or communism the cause of most human suffering? Has violence increased or decreased over the course of history? In this wholly original and remarkably ambitious work, 'Atrocitologist' Matthew White considers man's inhumanity to man across several thousand years of history. From the First Punic War and the collapse of Mayan rule, to the reign of Peter the Great and the cataclysmic events of the Second World War, White's epic book spans centuries and civilisations as it measures the hundred most violent events in human history. While sceptical of any grand theory for the causes of human violence, White does share three big lessons gleaned from his careful statistical analysis: one, chaos is more deadly than tyranny; two, the world is even more disorganised than we realise; and three, wars kill more civilians than soldiers (in fact, the army is usually the safest place to be).If we study history to avoid the mistakes of the past, then there can be no more important place to start than this eye-opening and entertaining book.
