Soil Biology

release date: Oct 01, 1989
Soil Biology
There is currently great interest in the biology of soil, stimulated by an increased concern to conserve natural resources, not only in agriculture but also in natural ecosystems. Recent developments in molecular biology have increased the possibilities of manipulating soil organisms and the processes they carry out, to improve food production and the quality of the environment. But important environmental questions associated with the application ofthis new biotechnology to soils are still to be resolved. Issues such as the desirability of using genetically-engineered microorganisms in soil can be discussed sensibly only in the light of an understanding of naturally-occurring organisms in soil. Although on a global basis food production continues to increase, man''s current relationship with the soil in many parts ofthe world is characterised by decreasing soil fertility and increasing population pressure. Soil Science has an important role to play in the future, helping to solve these problems. Although not all areas of this large and expanding subject are covered in this book, I hope that I have been able to present the principles of soil biology in such a way that will interest the reader.

Whistler

Whistler
In ''Whistler,'' T. Martin Wood delves deep into the life and psyche of the American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler, whose aesthetics and larger-than-life personality left an indelible mark on the art world. Wood''s biography is more than an account of Whistler''s life; it explores the painter''s philosophy of "art for art''s sake," examining how it played out in his work and personal interactions. The book is carefully structured, resonating with Whistler''s own approach to his paintings as ''arrangements'' and ''harmonies'', thus contextualizing Whistler within the broader literary movement of Aestheticism, and providing a thoughtful examination of the ways in which his art mirrored his beliefs. The literary style combines meticulous research with a reflective narrative, creating a vivid portrayal within the setting of the Gilded Age. Wood is adept at unraveling the complexities of Whistler''s character, from the elegance captured in the butterfly signature to the contentious public controversies he engaged in. The comprehensive and scholarly approach by T. Martin Wood examine the influences and experiences that shaped Whistler into a pivotal figure of modern art. A historian and biographer, Wood''s extensive study is evocative of not only the intricate personality of Whistler but also the zeitgeist of a transitional period in art history. Readers might conjecture that Wood''s own captivation with the era''s cultural dynamics fueled his quest to represent Whistler authentically, suggesting parallels in the evolution of both their creative expressions. Such dedication underscores the narrative, imbuing it with a diligence that only someone with a profound connection to their subject can provide. ''Whistler'' by T. Martin Wood is an essential read for aficionados of art history and those interested in the societal shifts of the late 19th century. The book draws the reader into the paradoxical world of a man whose life was as enigmatic as it was public. It promises insights not only into Whistler as an artist but as an epitome of the aesthetic, intellectual, and social ferment of his time. Engaging and enlightening, Wood''s work is a commendable contribution to the literary corpus on iconic historic figures and will no doubt enrich the reader''s understanding of the period and its enduring impact on contemporary perspectives on art and artists.

Design to Value
What opportunities does Design to Value afford the built environment? Design to Value is a commitment to process above all else. Well understood and applied in the manufacturing industries, its potential is only now starting to be realised in architecture, engineering and construction. It challenges designers to lead the way in creating more innovative and stakeholder-centric analyses, workflows, construction techniques and products. Through architectural thinking, value in the built environment can be maximised. Seeking to create deep and lasting impacts on industry, society and the planet, Design to Value rejects architecture’s current professional services model. The design and delivery stages of traditional procurement routes are not sustainable, and Design to Value outlines a new path for informed design processes. Bryden Wood, leading international expert in Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and the Platform approach to Design for Manufacture and Assembly (P-DfMA), has spent the last fifteen years developing Design to Value as part of a new framework for the future of the design and construction industry. In this essential book, the practice challenges architects and the wider industry to think differently about how value is generated, enhanced and retained in the built realm, providing a method that will improve outcomes for architects, clients, industries and society. Architects must bend and break habitual processes to build better systems, better buildings and better futures. Features: Over 125 images, including photographs, sketches and diagrams Over 20 international case studies, including those from Canada, France, India, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia and USA Projects from leading practices, such as Atelier Bow-Wow, BIG, David Miller Architects, Kieran Timberlake and Lacaton & Vassal, as well as Bryden Wood.

The Family and Descendants of St. Thomas More

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Family and Descendants of St. Thomas More
"This book, weaving together the history and genealogy of the More family and of the other families to which they allied themselves by marriage, provides an illuminating sequel to the various lives that have been written of St Thomas More. It tells the story of what happened to his family in the wake of his heroic witness against the tyranny of Henry VIII and how his descendents, inspired by his faith, were affected by their refusal to conform to the Church of England as, under successive monarchs, England was forcibly transformed from a Catholic into a Protestant country." "This is a story of a line of laymen and women, and of priests and nuns, all of whom had a deep faith and a firm resolve that makes them worthy of being listed among the ''Confessors of the Faith'' - minor Confessors, maybe, but Confessors nonetheless."--BOOK JACKET.
