John Fowler

release date: Oct 18, 2007
John Fowler
John Fowler was an interior decorator who set fashions and changed tastes. The English country house style, which he developed with Sibyl Colefax and Nancy Lancaster, his partners in the firm of Colefax & Fowler, has proved a source of continuing inspiration to decorators and home-owners on both sides of the Atlantic and indeed across the world. Today, a hundred years after his birth, his influence is almost as powerful as it was in the mid 20th century, when he was working on many of Britain's finest and most famous houses, including Uppark, Chequers and Buckingham Palace, as well as dozens of more modest projects. Fowler's style has been so widely imitated that it is easy to forget what an innovator he was. In the 1930s and 1940s his style was a breath of fresh country air, sweeping away heavy velvets and damasks in favour of crisp cotton chintzes, replacing glossy mahogany with painted Regency furnishings, elaborate porcelain and glitzy ormolu with modest pottery and painted tin. Even after the war, when he came to specialize in the decoration of architecturally important interiors, he continued to prefer 'humble elegance' and 'romantic disrepair' to pomposity.

The Fallacy of Misplaced Leadership

release date: Jan 01, 2005
The Fallacy of Misplaced Leadership
The leadership literature typically talks about the discrete individuality of its subject and particularly the personal qualities and capabilities of a few key people occupying top positions in a hierarchy. Current leadership research now has begun to generate new knowledge about leadership practice in relations of interpersonal exchange. Nevertheless, there is an urgent need for the ramifications of this insight to be more sufficiently developed. The current discussion explores how a perspective of process studies challenges the dominance of the field by individual social actors and discrete schemes of relations. Its aims are twofold. First, it will show how both of these latter epistemologies are lacking and suggest that current leadership research and development activities must rise to the ontological challenge of processes rather than things. Second, it looks at some methodological implications of this way of thinking as a productive incitement to future management studies.

Marketing to Consumers Undergoing Life Transitions

release date: Jan 01, 1999
Marketing to Consumers Undergoing Life Transitions
This dissertation focuses on the impact that major life transitions (e.g., marriage, divorce, first job, retirement) have on consumer response to marketing communications. Household life-cycle models have revealed reliable classifications of purchase behavior across stages in the life course, but no models to date have attempted to address the points of transition between life stages where purchase decisions for the next life stage are being made. In particular, there is a need in the marketing literature for research that describes the nature of the mechanisms and processes associated with consumer adjustment to life transitions, and how these processes influence consumer preferences for new role-related products and attitudes toward advertising. This dissertation advances and tests a general model of life transitions which proposes that a consumer's appraisal of the role transition is a key mediator of subsequent response to marketing activities for role-related products. The results are expected to make contributions to marketing practice, theory development, and public policy. An experimental design was used to test the hypotheses presented. The main study examined and compared the response of two groups to new products and advertisements with positive and problem-focused tone executions. One group consisted of consumers in the midst of adapting to the career entry transition (9 months or less on the job since graduation), and the other group consisted of consumers who had completed and adapted to the transition (on the job 2-6 years since graduation). The results of the analyses provide support for the basic premise for research in this area of marketing that consumers undergoing a life transition respond differently to marketing communications than do consumers of like age, income, education, and gender who have already completed and adapted to the transition. Support is also found for the mediating role of appraisal in predicting the differential response of transitioning consumers and more experienced consumers. A significant transition group x appraisal group interaction was found to predict the level of consumer interest in role-related products. Also, a three-way (transition group x appraisal group x advertisement tone) interaction was as found to predict overall consumer response to advertisements for role-related products. The results also provide support for role acquisition frameworks and prior research in the appraisal and mood literatures, and pave the way for future marketing research on this important phenomenon.

Decision-making in Civil Litigation

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Decision-making in Civil Litigation
The current study examined the relationship between juror cognitive processing (measured by need for cognition [NFC]), attorney credibility, evidence strength, and civil litigation verdicts (liability, likelihood of causation, and compensatory damages). Participants viewed a videotaped mock civil trial in which the credibility of the attorneys and the strength of the plaintiff's evidence were manipulated. There was a three-way interaction between plaintiff attorney credibility, defense attorney credibility, and strength of evidence for liability verdicts. For participants exposed to strong evidence and a non-credible defense attorney, the likelihood of a liable verdict (compared to a not liable verdict) was higher for a credible plaintiff attorney than a non-credible plaintiff attorney. Participants exposed to ambiguous evidence and a credible defense attorney had a higher likelihood of a liable verdict when the plaintiff attorney was credible versus non-credible. Participants' NFC also interacted with the plaintiff attorney credibility. For high, but not low, NFC participants, the likelihood of a liable verdict was higher for a credible plaintiff attorney than a non-credible plaintiff attorney. Levels of NFC also interacted with plaintiff attorney credibility for likelihood of causation estimates. For high, but not low, NFC participants, the likelihood of causation estimates were higher for a credible plaintiff attorney than a non-credible plaintiff attorney. With regard to compensatory damage awards, there was a higher probability of obtaining the damage award amount requested, or more than the amount requested, for a credible plaintiff attorney than a non-credible plaintiff attorney. A credible plaintiff attorney also led to a lower probability of obtaining a damage award that was less than the amount requested. These findings suggest that the credibility of attorneys is influential to verdict decisions; however, the credibility of the plaintiff attorney has a more direct influence than the credibility of the defense attorney. The findings also suggest that case evidence is not always the primary determinant of verdicts. The heuristic-systematic model's additivity, attenuation, and bias hypotheses were also tested. None of these hypotheses were supported across any verdict decisions. Practical, theoretical, and policy implications of these findings are discussed.
