The Rights of Nature and the Testimony of Things

release date: Jul 15, 2024
The Rights of Nature and the Testimony of Things
The Rights of Nature and the Testimony of Things begins by analyzing the ethical debates and political contexts relating to Latin American “rights of nature” legislation and the political ontology of nonhuman speech within a framework of intercultural and multispecies diplomacy. Author Mark Anderson shows how Latin American authors and thinkers complicate traditional humanistic perspectives on nature, the social, and politics, exploring how animals, plants, and environments as a whole might be said to engage in social relations and political speech or self-representation. Drawing Native Amazonian thought into productive tension with a variety of posthumanist theoretical frameworks—ranging from Derrida’s conceptualization of passive decision and hospitality to biosemiotics, Karen Barad’s theorization of intra-activity, and Isabelle Stengers’ proposal for cosmopolitical diplomacy—Anderson analyzes literary works by Julio Cortázar, Clarice Lispector, José Eustasio Rivera, and Davi Kopenawa that reframe environmental ethics in terms of collective, multispecies work and reciprocal care and politics as a cosmopolitics of friendship rooted in diplomacy across difference. Finally, Anderson examines the points of connection and divergences between Latin American relational ontologies and Euro American posthumanist theories within Indigenous Latin American remodernization projects that reappropriate and repurpose ancestral practices as well as develop new technologies with the goal of forging alternative modernities compatible with a livable future for all species.

Drafting Patent and Know-How Licencing Agreements

release date: Aug 14, 2023
Drafting Patent and Know-How Licencing Agreements
This book provides a focused and detailed discussion of one specific type of intellectual property (IP) transaction: the patent and know-how licence agreement. It analyses and explains the legal and practical issues that arise when drafting, negotiating, and advising this kind of agreement. The work discusses issues of law and practice relevant to IP licensing, including legal issues affecting international IP transactions, the nature of a licence, commercial law and practice affecting patent and know-how licence agreements, and the role of other areas of law, such as data protection and privacy, competition law, insolvency, and sale-of-goods law. It provides a detailed overview of patent and know-how licence agreements, including international business practice and trends, valuation of technology and financial terms, key elements, structure, and how they differ from other IP transactions. Later chapters examine in detail the terms commonly found in patent and know-how licence agreements, and each chapter includes samples of wording to illustrate the points under discussion. The work focuses on English and European Union-wide law, considering selected differences between English law and the law in other jurisdictions, such as the United States, to illustrate the different approaches the court may take on particular issues. Drafting Patent and Know-how Licence Agreements is an authoritative and practical guide to this area of law, providing detailed coverage of everything the legal practitioner should consider when drafting this kind of agreement.

The Best Grilling Cookbook Ever Written By Two Idiots
If we can grill it, you can grill it. We''re Mark Anderson and Ryan Fey, better known as the Grill Dads, and often seen on Food Network, Today Show and across social media. We live and cook by a very simple mantra: You can make literally anything on a grill. We like to joke that people at home can look at us and say, “If these two idiots can do it, I can too.” We’re not trained chefs. We never attended culinary school. We’re home chefs. Backyard connoisseurs. Grill enthusiasts. Weekend warriors. Grilling and barbecue are different. See, grills are a tool, a versatile heat source. BBQ, on the other hand, is a cuisine. We don’t concentrate on making great low-and-slow BBQ, although we do enjoy doing that from time to time. We’re here to show people how to use grills to cook anything and everything. From soups and salads to mains and appetizers—the grill is a multifaceted tool you can use to turn out inventive and delicious food with a kiss of smoke and fire. We are incredibly proud to offer this cookbook as a roadmap to express yourself and experiment with different types of grills, cooking methods and cuisines—with recipes designed to help you grow into an outstanding home chef. We’ve filled it with simple, fun, delicious recipes that you can make as written or use as a guide to experiment on your own. This cookbook was written for everyone, based on our philosophy that you, yes YOU, can make everything and anything on a grill.

From Boas to Black Power

release date: May 07, 2019
From Boas to Black Power
From Boas to Black Power investigates how U.S. cultural anthropologists wrote about race, racism, and "America" in the 20th century as a window into the greater project of U.S. anti-racist liberalism. Anthropology as a discipline and the American project share a common origin: their very foundations are built upon white supremacy, and both are still reckoning with their racist legacies. In this groundbreaking intellectual history of anti-racism within twentieth-century cultural anthropology, Mark Anderson starts with the legacy of Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict and continues through the post-war and Black Power movement to the birth of the Black Studies discipline, exploring the problem "America" represents for liberal anti-racism. Anderson shows how cultural anthropology contributed to liberal American discourses on race that simultaneously bolstered and denied white domination. From Boas to Black Power provides a major rethinking of anthropological anti-racism as a project that, in step with the American racial liberalism it helped create, paradoxically maintained white American hegemony. Anthropologists influenced by radical political movements of the 1960s offered the first sustained challenge to that project, calling attention to the racial contradictions of American liberalism reflected in anthropology. Their critiques remain relevant for the discipline and the nation.

Water Purification Efforts and the Black-white Infant Mortality Gap, 1906-1938

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Water Purification Efforts and the Black-white Infant Mortality Gap, 1906-1938
According to Troesken (2004), efforts to purify municipal water supplies at the turn of the 20th century dramatically improved the relative health of blacks. There is, however, little empirical evidence to support the Troesken hypothesis. Using city-level data published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for the period 1906-1938, we explore the relationship between water purification efforts and the black-white infant mortality gap. Our results suggest that, while water filtration was effective across the board, adding chlorine to the water supply reduced mortality only among black infants. Specifically, chlorination is associated with an 11 percent reduction in black infant mortality and a 13 percent reduction in the black-white infant mortality gap. We also find that chlorination led to a substantial reduction in the black-white diarrhea mortality gap among children under the age of 2, although this estimate is measured with less precision.

Marriage Equality Laws and Youth Suicidal Behaviors

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Marriage Equality Laws and Youth Suicidal Behaviors
Since the landmark ruling in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health in 2004, the legalization of same-sex marriage (SSM) has proliferated throughout the United States via either legislative action or court order. Advocates of SSM laws argue that marriage equality will generate important health benefits not only for adult same-sex couples, but also for LGBQ-identifying youths. Using data from the State Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, we explore the relationship between marriage equality and suicidal behaviors among LGBQ-identifying youths. Despite previous research suggesting otherwise, we find little evidence that SSM laws have reduced suicide attempts among teen sexual minorities, nor have they decreased the likelihood of suicide planning, suicide ideation, or depression. Instead, we find some evidence that SSM legalization via judicial mandate is associated with worse mental health for these individuals, consistent with a story of social backlash.

Answer for Cancer
Answer for Cancer Death came knocking on his door -- but Anderson refused to open. Stage 4 inoperable cancer crept away in defeat. In Part One, Anderson tells the story of his trauma, his near-death experiences, his ignorance and naivete regarding medical treatments, his foray into alternatives, and finally his happy outcome. Through it all, Anderson''s "funny bone" survived intact. (Have you ever heard of this home remedy for cancer? Drink your own urine! Seriously!) Part Two relates nine keys that anyone can use to overcome most cancers. Some keys may surprise you. "Get a health coach, but not your doctor." (Chapter 1) "Chew your way to recovery." He outlines eight parallels between natural medicine and the medicine of God''s Word. "Just take your medicine and faith will be there when you need it." "God''s very nature is healing. Fish swim, birds fly, God heals," asserts Anderson. (Chapter 16) "Healing is not only God''s will -- it is His pleasure." (Chapter 17) Answer to Cancer: 9 Keys tells more than one man''s story. No matter where you are on the road to health (or even if you''re not on the road, but helpless and hopeless by the roadside), here''s the practical information you need to overcome this killer disease.
