Mary Isabella Rouse (Maybelle) was born on the family farm in East Galena, Illinois. Maybelle taught piano lessons and in 1937 opened Maybelle''s Tea Room. Maybelle''s Tea Room moved into the Old Stockade in the 1940''s. Maybelle''s Tea Room closed in 1947 and Maybelle began researching and providing history of Galena, Illinois.

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of social support on the experiences of Black students at predominantly white institutions. Utilizing a narrative inquiry methodology, the study addresses how Black students define social support along with the structures that facilitate or hinder feelings of mattering and belonging for Black students at predominantly white institutions. A review of the literature includes a look at the pathway to college, a picture of the Black experiences in college, an examination of marginality and mattering, along with the capacity of social support to buttress individuals against stressors common to all students and those unique to Black students in the post-secondary environment. Data for this qualitative study was collected at a large, public, predominantly white, research institution in the southeastern United States. The primary source of data was in-person participant interviews with Black undergraduate students. Six proverbial and thematic findings emerged. Utilizing Critical Race Theory and a transformative theoretical paradigm, this study reveals the multidimensional presence of racism and links research findings to actions intended to mitigate disparities. The resulting discussion of findings offer implications for practice and present a profound counter-narrative to dominant culture positions, deficit orientations, and conventional wisdom about Black students in higher education.

Common lore is that you cannot sail the northwest coast - the winds are too fickle so you must motor along the Inside Passage. The author knows that is not true because in 7 years she traveled over 10,000 NM along the northwest coast in her 38'' sailboat, sailing about 2/3 of the time under way. This guide will help you understand how you can do the same. There are two features of the northwest coast inland waters that you must understand. First, the regions you will pass through have unusual wind patterns that seem completely erratic until you understand the common summer weather patterns and how land affects wind. Then, the winds are predictable and comprehensible, and you will know when and where to sail. Second, the tidal currents can be so strong that a narrow channel becomes a raging white water rapid, complete with whirlpools and strong eddies. With two tide cycles a day, and a height difference of up to 23 feet (7 meters), anyone traveling in a sailboat must take the extreme tidal conditions seriously. If you don''t know when your travel must coincide with the appropriate current flow, you may go backwards (or worse). This guide is not a memoir, doesn''t focus on anchorages, and won''t try to teach you how to sail. Instead it is a practical guide about how to take advantage of the characteristic winds and tidal currents of each area so you can enjoy sailing, rather than motoring, along this uniquely beautiful temperate wilderness coastline. Here are more details about the very-well researched guide. It begins with a brief part on planning and a general overview of the currents and wind. It then provides 19 reference chapters divided into three parts: "Cruising in Civilization" from Seattle to Johnstone Strait; "Cruising in Wilderness" through Johnstone Strait, Queen Charlotte Strait and the north BC coast to Prince Rupert; and "Cruising the Big Water" from the Southeast Alaska border to Glacier Bay. E-bikes are bicycles that are fitted with an electric motor to provide the rider with power-assistance. While e-bike use is growing around the world, there is still limited research directed at this mode of travel. This study investigated the safety implications of e-bike use in Victoria, Australia, including perceptions of safety at various on-road and off-road locations along with the crash experiences of e-bike riders. The study includes a literature review on perceptions of safety, a review of the current infrastructure design standards and a survey of e-bike riders exploring their experiences and perceptions of safety. The survey found that hill climbing capability and spot speed are two potential e-bike performance capabilities that are different to pedal bikes in terms of how a rider interacts with on-road and off-road infrastructure. Wider lanes and paths, smooth and flat surfaces, adequate sight distance and better connectivity are some of the main requirements identified for e-bike riders. There is no significant difference between e-bike and pedal bike riders in perceptions of comfort, including safety, or on riders'' perspective of cycling infrastructure. E-bike riders were found to be older riders with less riding experience and potentially lower cycling proficiency. It was found that priority should be given to the development of education materials or rider training programs, particularly for older e-bikes riders and potential e-bike riders.

What drives these archaeologists is not the money (meager) or the jobs (scarce) or the working conditions (dangerous), but their passion for the stories that would otherwise be buried and lost.

Cyclists are vulnerable road users and the most severe injury outcomes for on-road cyclists are from collisions involving a motor vehicle. Research undertaken in this thesis aimed to identify contributing factors in unsafe cyclist-driver events to inform efforts to reduce the incidence of cyclist-driver crashes and cyclist injury severity outcomes. The research was conducted in three stages, primarily in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and is presented as a thesis by publication.The Safe System Framework was used as the theoretical model for the research and the research stages included i) an observational study using a covertly positioned video camera at signalised intersections across metropolitan Melbourne; ii) a naturalistic cycling study using a compact video camera attached to commuter cyclists'' helmets which recorded their trips to and from work; and, iii) a national online survey of drivers and cyclists of their cycling-related behaviours, knowledge and attitudes. The role of driver behaviour in cyclist-driver crashes and near-crash events was identified and was the most significant finding of this doctoral research. In-depth analysis of near-collision events revealed that drivers'' behaviour immediately prior to an event contributed to the majority of unsafe interactions between cyclists and drivers. The most frequent driver behaviour associated with near-collision events was turning left across a cyclists'' path. Three important components of this behaviour were: indicating (signalling) before turning, driver head checks before turning left and clearance distance when overtaking cyclists.These three behavioural components were investigated further, with a particular focus on the influence of cycling-related knowledge and attitudes. Findings supported the concept of safety in numbers which proposes a positive association between cycling participation and cyclist safety. A significant finding was that drivers who were also cyclists (driver-cyclists) were more likely than drivers who were not cyclists to report safe driving behaviours. Driver-cyclists also reported more positive attitudes towards cyclists and good knowledge of road rules for cycling facilities.Cyclist behaviour had also been identified as a potential crash risk factor, particularly red light running behaviour. Encouragingly, however, only a small proportion of observed cyclist infringed and predictive factors included direction of travel (left turn) and gender (male). The presence of other road users (cross traffic and in the same direction) had a deterrent effect.Last, the presence of cycling facilities was associated with cyclist-driver interactions. Cyclist and driver behaviour at two cycling facilities at intersections (bike boxes and continuous bike lane) was measured. Despite the high level of knowledge of bike boxes, many drivers were non-compliant at this type of facility. In contrast, both cyclists and drivers were more likely to be compliant at the facility that provided a continuous parallel bike lane compared with the bike box facility.Findings of this research provide new insights into the influence of behavioural factors and presence of cycling facilities on cyclist safety. Greater cyclist-related driver education and training are essential to improve cyclist safety. It is anticipated that the findings from this research will inform programs and initiatives that will improve the safety of on-road cyclists.

This report is a review of the literature on cyclists who ride in large groups or bunches on public roads. The research was conducted following the Victorian State Coroner''s investigation into the death of an elderly pedestrian, following a collision with a cyclist who was riding in a bunch. The aims of the review were to understand the behaviour of bunch riders, particularly the behaviours that may contribute to increased risk of collision and to make recommendations for effective enforcement and countermeasure strategies for this road user group.
