An Experimental Approach to Sherd Variation

release date: Jan 01, 2019
An Experimental Approach to Sherd Variation
Ceramic sherds are one of the most abundant artifactual remains in the archaeological record. They have been used in the past to address technological, typological, and chronological questions. However, less research has focused on whether non-production related behaviors contribute to sherd variation. An experimental data set of 30 replica vessels-that were modeled from those found in the Late Woodland period of Northern Ohio were created. Thus, the vessels were then subjected to one of two simple conditions: dropped while empty or dropped while full of corn. The Number of sherds produced, sherd weights, and sherd shape were all recorded in order to determine whether these variables were influenced by the difference in the experimental condition.
