Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors

release date: Nov 01, 2020
Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors
A lively, richly illustrated family biography of pioneering Boston tattoo artists Edward "Dad" Liberty and his sons Frank, Harold, and Ted. Accompanied by a lush catalogue of historic tattoo flash art. Through the complex, deeply human story of an iconic family of Boston tattooers, Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors forges a deeper understanding of the history of a vernacular art form and the folk who made a living from its subversive attractions. From the 1910s until 1962, when Massachusetts banned tattooing statewide, Edward "Dad" Liberty and his three sons held a near-monopoly on the Boston tattoo scene from their shops in Scollay Square, the city''s gritty entertainment district. Over their lifetimes, the Liberty men accumulated an unmatched collection of hand-painted tattoo flash art, photographs, machines, shop signs, correspondence, ephemera, and family memorabilia. Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors brings together this evocative, sometimes eye-popping material to create a groundbreaking visual and narrative history of tattooing in Boston. It is an appealing work for general readers and tattoo enthusiasts, as well as a definitive resource for tattoo artists and historians of popular culture. Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors presents nearly 700 never before published tattoo designs, known as "flash," passed down through the Liberty family. Painted on sheets, boards, books, window shades, and scraps of repurposed paper, these works represent nearly a dozen tattoo artists who plied needle and ink from the first years of the 20th century through the early 1960s. Highlights include artwork by early Boston tattoo artist and showman Frank Howard, Ed Smith, and tattoo luminary Ben Corday. Also featured are over 70 illustrations of newly-discovered art and artifacts owned by the Libertys and many of the tattooers in their orbit, including Detroit''s Percy Waters; Portland, Oregon''s "Sailor" George Fosdick; Los Angeles'' Ben Corday; Honolulu''s "Long Tom" and "Sailor" Jerry Collins; and Boston''s Fred McKay, James Fraser, Lawrence Davis, Oscar Bouchard, Jack Redcloud, Harvey Chanarkar, and Frank Harrington. Also represented is a host of material from Ted Liberty''s time in Baltimore and later Vancouver, Canada and Harold Liberty''s time in Salem, New Hampshire.

Saint Georges et le Dragon

release date: Mar 22, 2014

Mandela's Children and Youth Day: Representations of National Identity in South African News Media

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Mandela's Children and Youth Day: Representations of National Identity in South African News Media
ABSTRACTFollowing the demise of apartheid, legislative, political and social practices were dramatically changed to promote equality and shared access for all South Africans. Newspapers and other mass media texts give insight to the co-construction of ethnic identity post-apartheid and evidence the emergence of a new dominant cultural narrative. In this new dominant cultural narrative, the trope of a colorblind national identity is frequently referenced. Another key component in this narrative construction is the memorialization of past traumatic events. This dissertation examines the news coverage of the 30th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings, which occurred on June 16, 2006. The Soweto Uprisings will be framed as a "cultural trauma" (Alexander et al., 2004) and methods of critical discourse analysis will be used to examine the public construction of national identity in the post-apartheid era. The following questions guide the analysis of news media discourse: What changes to the South African national identity are evidenced in news stories covering the anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings? Do racially distinctive communities participate equally in the creation of this media discourse? In what ways are South African ethnic minorities "othered" in news features? How did/does the dominant cultural narrative evidenced in the media discourse influence the construction and management of racial identities in the larger context of South African society? The examination of the co-construction of national and racial identities in these news features draws upon an amalgamation of CDA methodologies outlined in Fairclough (1995, 1999), van Dijk (1988, 1991), and Wodak (Wodak & Weiss, Eds., 2003). The creation and re-creation of a shared history from the collective trauma of forcefully imposed, restrictive racialized communities is a dimension of national identity construction saliently evidenced by changes in the public discourse or dominant/counter narratives. Media discourse illustrates the emergence of colorblind national identity as the desirable, or default, national identity in post-apartheid South Africa and highlights the journalistic role in the creation and management of racial and national identities, liberation narratives, and reconciliatory discourses.

Then Offero''s name is changed to Christopher. / Author Margaret Hodges retells with power and simplicity this unforgettable tale of the man who became known as the patron saint of travelers. And illustrator Richard Jesse Watson has created hypnopompic paintings that dramatically capture Offero''s journey and the brilliance of his discovery of the One he sought. / Based on old nursery rhymes, the poetic text by Newbery Honor winner Kathi Appelt and the beautiful light-filled paintings of Debra Reid Jenkins combine to make this gentle bedtime story a perfect illustration of God s abiding love.

When an unknown stranger visits the castle and asks Kin Arthur''s favor, he is allowed to serve in the kitchen for his meat and bread. The True Tale of Johnny Appleseed

release date: Jan 01, 1997
The True Tale of Johnny Appleseed
This is a lovely version of an eccentric bit of American history. The text describes a man with a different outlook on life-a man who believed that other creatures have just as much right to be on the earth as humans. Johnny Appleseed lived his life true to his philosophy; he carried news between the settled East and the newly settled West and planted groves of apple trees in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Every other page presents a full-page illustration closely related to the text, and the paragraphs on the facing pages are decorated with more beautiful artwork. Johnny Appleseed became a legend and left a legacy that is still remembered and enjoyed. The author says some people thought he was crazy, but this book emphasizes the good he did.
