To the One I Love the Best

release date: Mar 07, 2023
To the One I Love the Best
A witty and charming account of the wildly entertaining Elsie de Wolfe in 1950s Hollywood, recounted by her dear friend, the beloved creator of Madeline Ludwig Bemelmans’ charming intergenerational friendship with the late-in-life “First Lady of Interior Decoration” provides an enormously enjoyable nostalgia trip to the sun-soaked glamour of Los Angeles, where de Wolfe surrounded herself with classic movie stars and a luminous parade of life''s oddities. With hilarity and mischief that de Wolfe would no doubt approve, To the One I Love the Best lifts the curtain on 1950s Hollywood--a bygone world of extravagance and eccentricity, where the parties are held in circus tents and populated by ravishing movie stars. Bemelmans, who was working at MGM, had originally come to the California home of de Wolfe just for cocktails but by the end of the night, he was firmly established as a member of the family: given a bedroom in their sumptuous house, invitations to the most outrageous parties in Hollywood, and the friendship of the larger-than-life woman known to her closest friends simply as ''Mother''. To the One I Love the Best (which refers to de Wolfe’s dog) is a touching tribute to a fabulously funny woman and an American icon. Be pretty if you can, be witty if you must, but be gracious if it kills you. - Elsie de Wolfe

El Danubio azul

release date: Apr 01, 2007
Bemelmans escribió también novelas como El Danubio azul (1945), Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (1943) o The Street Where the Heart Lies (1963), textos humorísticos como Life Class (1938) y Hotel Splendide (1941), y libros de viajes como The Donkey Inside (1941), The Best of Times: An Account of Europe Revisited (1948) o Italian Holiday (1961).

When You Lunch with the Emperor

release date: Jan 01, 2004
When You Lunch with the Emperor
Ludwig Bemelmans - legendary bon vivant, raconteur and self-mythologiser - lived life like a character from a novel. Thankfully for us he was there to write about it himself. After an idyllic Tyrolean childhood followed by an equally rebellious adolescence, Ludwig was shipped off to America by his family. He spent years working in New York''s hotel and restaurant demimonde and a period in the US Army before eventually becoming a celebrated artist and writer. He moved seamlessly from below stairs to mixing with the rich and famous. He spent time in Hollywood, designed sets for Broadway, opened restaurants and travelled on endless adventures through South America and Europe. Wherever Ludwig went and whatever he did -letting Parisian criminals baby-sit his daughter, getting caught with his toenails painted red by the Gestapo or discovering the only restaurant with toilets in the Amazon jungle - you were guaranteed magic and pure entertainment. When You Lunch with the Emperor paints an enchanted picture of this life less ordinary through Bemelmans'' finest tales.
