Softspoken
“Shepard takes ordinary, grubby people and makes them interesting sounding boards for bigger ideas concerning morality, ethics and personal redemption.” – Publishers Weekly “Shepard manipulates genre elements in order to transcend genre expectations.” – The New York Review of Books A chilling and mysterious voice becomes audible to Sanie shortly after she and her husband Jackson move into the decaying antebellum mansion that is the Bullard ancestral home in rural South Carolina. At first, she wonders if the voice might be a prank played by Jackson''s peyote-popping brother Will or his equally off-kilter sister Louise. But soon Sanie discovers that the ghostly voice is merely a single piece in the decadent, baroque puzzle that comprises the Bullard family history rank with sensuality, violence, repression and madness.

L'Homme qui peignit le dragon Griaule

release date: Sep 01, 2011

Abimagique
« C’EST LA FILLE coiffée style Halloween. » THE TIMES

Crows and Silences

release date: Dec 31, 2024
Crows and Silences
The late Lucius Shepard was one of his era''s best and most quintessentially American writers. His dark yet grudgingly hopeful worldview gave birth to a treasure trove of fiction that could have been written by nobody else. Crows and Silences collects four select short novels, each totally unlike the others. In Kalamantan, jewel merchant Barnett follows the trail of the expat American fool Curtis MacKinnon deep into the jungles of Borneo, only to discover that the ancient gods of the Dayak have been awakened in soul-maddening form. In Skull City, the junkie Larson, the Satanist Cooge, and a woman stuck in two worlds at once have a fateful confrontation in what may be Hell--or possibly someplace worse. In Louisiana Breakdown, faithless musician Jack Mustaine meets Vida Dumar, a small-town woman with a dangerously sordid past, and each seeks in the other more than either is prepared to give. And in Colonel Rutherford''s Colt, gun dealers Rita Whitelaw and Jimmie Ray Guy are thrust into conflict with white supremacists, armed only with a pistol and Jimmie''s preternatural ability to invent stories. A combination of misfortunes prevented Lucius Shepard from breaking out into the literary world beyond SF and his elevation to the Pantheon of writers remains always a breath and a wish away. In the meantime, here are four tales of people hoping to survive the daily trauma of their lives. All caught in a world of crows and silences and trying to make the best of it.

Beautiful Blood

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Beautiful Blood
"...Beautiful Blood begins in the 1850s in the town of Teocinte, in a world "separated from our own by the thinnest margin of possibility." It is a landscape whose dominant feature is the massive, long-dormant body of an ancient dragon that has lain there motionless, for millennia, exerting a powerful but mysterious influence on the surround area. The novel tells the story of Richard Rosacher, an ambitious young medical student who becomes fascinated by the properties inherent in the dragon''s blood. His exploitation of those properties launches him on a career that leads him from the shabbiest quarter of Teocinte to a morally ambiguous position of power, wealth, and influence. Beautiful Blood takes us through the entire length of that career, which is marked throughout by the invisible agency of Griaule, who may well be the driving force behind Rosacher''s astonishing ascension. The novel also encapsulates the events of the initial Griaule story, events that dovetail neatly with the current tale. Meric Cattanay, the eponymous protagonist of "The Man Who Painted the Dragon Griaule," makes a welcome reappearance here. Meric''s decades-long involvement with the dragon begins at roughly the same time as Rosacher''s. Their stories proceed along parallel but independent lines that occasionally intersect, providing us with a view of familiar events wider and deeper than any we have had before. The result is a colorful, involving narrative with profound metaphysical overtones, one that raises - but does not answer - significant questions. Is the dragon merely a bizarre but entirely natural phenomenon? Or is he/it the manifestation of some divine purpose? And to what extent are the actions of men like Meric and Rosacher the reflections of its implacable but enigmatic will? Quesions such as these animate the narrative at every turn, adding an extra level of resonance to one of the most original and important fictional creations of recent years." -- dust jacket inside flaps.
