And in Colonel Rutherford''s Colt, gun dealers Rita Whitelaw and Jimmie Ray Guy are thrust into conflict with white supremacists, armed only with a pistol and Jimmie''s preternatural ability to invent stories. A combination of misfortunes prevented Lucius Shepard from breaking out into the literary world beyond SF and his elevation to the Pantheon of writers remains always a breath and a wish away. In the meantime, here are four tales of people hoping to survive the daily trauma of their lives. All caught in a world of crows and silences and trying to make the best of it.

Auteur à succès, Thomas Cradle se découvre par hasard un homonyme romancier dont il ne savait rien. En 1853, dans un lointain pays du Sud, en un monde séparé du nôtre par la plus infime marge de possibilité, la vallée de Carbonales, une région fertile entourant la cité de Teocinte et réputée pour sa production d’argent, d’acajou et d’indigo, était placée sous la domination d’un dragon nommé Griaule. Il y avait d’autres dragons en ce temps-là, vivant pour la plupart sur des îlots rocheux à l’ouest de la Patagonie — de minuscules créatures irascibles, dont la plus grande avait à peine la taille d’une alouette. Mais Griaule était l’une des Bêtes géantes qui avaient régné sur un âge antique. Au fil des siècles, il avait grandi jusqu’à mesurer sept cent cinquante pieds au garrot et plus de six mille pieds de la queue au museau. (Il convient de préciser ici que la croissance des dragons n’était pas due à l’apport de calories, mais à l’absorption d’une énergie engendrée par le passage du temps.) N’eût été un charme mal jeté, Griaule aurait péri depuis plusieurs millénaires. Saisi de crainte à l’instant décisif, le sorcier dont la mission était de l’occire — et qui savait que l’effet de ricochet magique mettrait sa vie en péril — avait raté sa cible d’un pouce du fait de cette minuscule défaillance. Bien que l’on ait perdu toute trace du thaumaturge, Griaule était demeuré en vie. Son cœur avait cessé de battre, son souffle s’était tu, mais son esprit continuait d’écumer, d’émettre les sinistres vibrations qui asservissaient tous ceux qui restaient trop longtemps dans son champ d’influence.

During his annual solo spring holiday in Teocinte, maritally disgruntled numismatist George finds the scale of a young dragon. When he starts cleaning the scale he''s briefly on a hot, grassy plain. When he does it again, pressing harder, he and the young hooker "Sylvia" are both transported, then chased by a 25-foot dragon. The dragon Griaule has gathered them and some 60 others to witness something.
