Travels with G

release date: May 01, 2023
Travels with G
This is my story of a once in a lifetime trip. It gives a feel for what America is really like after the tumultuous years of President Trump and the Covid pandemic. After years of planning, the adventure can finally start. This is a story of two ordinary Brits on a road trip, coast to coast, across the USA. I go on this journey with G, my wife of 30 years, Ginette. The book is about travelling across the continental USA and includes routes taken and places we visited, but it is also about our own personal situation leading up to the trip. I''ve taken inspiration from "Travels with Charley" by John Steinbeck, a favourite of mine. The story covers our travels from the east coast starting in Washington DC, across to Nashville & Memphis, north following the Mississippi River to St Louis, through Kansas taking the loneliest road to Denver, up through Yellowstone National Park and then the long stretch across to Portland, Oregon, down the Pacific Coast Highway to our final destination, Huntington Beach, California. Travelling through 15 states, covering over 6,000 miles. My thoughts and reflections detailed as the trip unfolds. Along the way I mention people we meet, my own observations of life in America including how divided the country has become. We visit some incredible national parks, settle into long drives on roads that reach to the horizon, get held up by snow in Wyoming, stopped by the police and meet lots of interesting people. Along the way we stop at world famous attractions such as Graceland, home of The King, Elvis Presley. Some parts of this vast country seem to have hardly changed since the first emigrants arrived. While some of the cities and towns have seen better days. Some of the places we visit are beautiful, some are extremely dangerous. Emotional, exciting and sometimes shocking. See y''all down the road!

The Art of Humorous Song: Examining Humorous Songs Through the Lens of Selected Song Sets
Humor is a universal human emotion, with many proven positive effects. These proven positive effects are invaluable to a vocal artist in reaching an audience. This document starts with an introduction to humorous art song. Following this is a critical defense of its inclusion in modern concert programming by exploring the effective use of humor in entertainment, clinical psychology, and business.Specific humorous art song sets are analyzed to validate this repertory as effective and legitimate. Performance options, text analysis, form, and score analysis were included. In the first section, Craigslistlieder by Gabriel Kahane (2009) and Another Reason I Dont Keep a Gun in the House by Tom Cipullo (1998) are explored. The second section introduces a compositional pattern that I have termed the short pithy song. These songs contrast other traditional art songs as they are extremely brief. The song sets explored are two collections, 19 Short Songs about Chuck Norris by David Harned Johnson (2016) and Do you sing, Mr. Twain? by Gordon Myers (1999). This study is informed through direct score analysis, online interviews, literature review, video performance analysis, and a phone interview with Dr. David Harned Johnson..

The Emperor's Cool Clothes

release date: Oct 01, 2018
The Emperor's Cool Clothes
The emperor can never find the perfect outfit until he meets the Rogue brothers, who can make clothes so special that only the coolest people are able to see them. But what happens when no one in the emperor''s court can see the clothes-and the emperor can''t either? Is no one cool enough or perhaps...there are no clothes to see? This funny, clever adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale is captured by Lee Harper in watercolor and pencil. There is an author''s note about the tale''s origin and Lee''s choice to create an imaginary kingdom where emperor penguins, walruses, albatross, seals, and polar bears all live-and shop-together. The author of The Emperor''s Cool Clothes has donated this book to the Worldreader program

To Kill a Mockingbird

release date: Feb 02, 2016
To Kill a Mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was instantly successful and has become a classic of modern American fiction. The novel is loosely based on the author''s observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old. The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with serious issues of rape and racial inequality. The narrator''s father, Atticus Finch, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. One critic explained the novel''s impact by writing, "In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism." As a Southern Gothic novel and a Bildungsroman, the primary themes of To Kill a Mockingbird involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence. Scholars have noted that Lee also addresses issues of class, courage and compassion, and gender roles in the American Deep South. The book is widely taught in schools in English-speaking countries with lessons that emphasize tolerance and decry prejudice. Despite its themes, To Kill a Mockingbird has been subject to campaigns for removal from public classrooms. Often the book is challenged for its use of racial epithets, and writers have noticed that regardless of its popularity since its publication, some readers are displeased by the novel''s treatment of black characters. Lee''s novel was initially reviewed by at least 30 newspapers and magazines, whose critics varied widely in their assessments. More recently, British librarians ranked the book ahead of the Bible as one "every adult should read before they die." The book was adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1962 by director Robert Mulligan, with a screenplay by Horton Foote. Since 1990, a play based on the novel has been performed annually in Harper Lee''s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. To date, it is Lee''s only published novel, and although she continues to respond to the book''s impact, she has refused any personal publicity for herself or the novel since 1964.

Go Set a Watchman

release date: Jul 18, 2015
Go Set a Watchman
To Kill a Mockingbird taught us one thing: even though hatred will follow us, everywhere, until the books of history run red-the tide can be turned back by simple goodness. Those are the two forces at work in the world. It shouldn''t be hard to reconcile the Atticus of Mockingbird to the Atticus in Watchman. He was born only twenty years after the end of the Civil War and raised in a strictly segregated society... so, anyone who would expect him to wholeheartedly embrace integration and full civil rights for blacks would want to read a fairy tale. In Watchman, Atticus reacts like we''d expect him to when outside forces threaten the social structures of his world. Having been born and raised in the South myself, I''ve known many people like Atticus: kind and fair to black people on an individual basis, but very uneasy when considering them on the whole. Atticus'' noblesse oblige which we admired in Mockingbird should not be mistaken for a true belief in equality for all. Watchman is a fine book and I was able to read it without impacting the tenderness I''ve always felt towards Mockingbird.

Portuguese Piano Music

release date: Jan 10, 2013
Portuguese Piano Music
As the first book of its kind, Nancy Lee Harper’s Portuguese Piano Music: An Introduction and Annotated Bibliography fills the gap in the historical record of Portuguese piano music from its start in the 18th century to the present. While although Spanish piano music is well documented owing to the reputation of such composers as Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, and Manuel de Falla, our knowledge of compositions in the tradition of Portuguese piano music has not fared as well, barring the work of Carlos Seixas (1704–1742). This obscurity, however, reflects poorly on the history of early piano music in light of the many compositions written for fortepiano on behalf of the Portuguese court during the first half of the 18th century. Indeed, it was in the royal halls of King John V during his reign from 1706 to 1750 where the early fortepiano was frequently heard. In Portuguese Piano Music, Harper explores this rich musical tradition, offering a brief introduction to the pianistic history of Portugal and overviews of Portugal’s contributions to solo piano music, piano in instrumental chamber music, piano concerti, piano for multiple pianists including with works with electronics, and didactic piano. While paying close attention to female composers, Harper adds an annotated and graded bibliography that presents readers with a comprehensive inventory of compositions. Appendixes include a selected discography, list of publishers, and other types of critical source information. To further illustrate its contents, Portuguese Piano Music contains a CD on which Harper performs representative repertoire, some of which are world premieres. This work is aimed at pianists, teachers, pupils, musicologists, and music lovers seeking to discover the remarkable world of Portuguese piano music.

Coyote

release date: Jan 05, 2013
Coyote
Author''s Note: COYOTE is based on the real events of the morning I learned of my brother Chase''s unexpected death - a morning when I actually saw and rode with a coyote - then returned home to learn that Chase was gone. Retold through the eyes of a child, COYOTE is a gentle and lyrical picture book dealing with the subject of loss. It is my hope that COYOTE will help children talk about loss and to show how art can be used to help heal the hurt of losing someone you love. In Chase''s memory, my wife Krista and I will donate our share of the proceeds to help the children of Sandy Hook. ~Lee Harper

Kiss, Kiss

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Kiss, Kiss
"The poems in Kiss, Kiss aspire, with feistiness and wit, to isolate, reclaim, memorialize, and reexamine those significant but ordinary longings, daydreams, people, and locations we too-often take for granted. Using the South''s lush landscapes as their settings, these poems celebrate family, talk frankly about loss, desire, and healing, mourn for those no longer with us, and find, in the mundane, that which is truly marvelous and transcendent."--BOOK JACKET.

The Use of Computer Algebra Systems in a Procedural Algebra Course to Facilitate a Framework for Procedural Understanding

release date: Jan 01, 2007
The Use of Computer Algebra Systems in a Procedural Algebra Course to Facilitate a Framework for Procedural Understanding
Analyses of covariance and independent samples t-tests were used to compare treatment and control groups based on the quantitative measures. The treatment instructor and students were able to integrate CAS technology into the classroom without difficulty. The instructor implemented the curriculum with fidelity but the discourse in the classroom did not reach the desired level. No significant difference was found between treatment and control students on the skills-based final exam, indicating that the introduction of CAS did not diminish procedural skill levels. No difference in procedural understanding based on the Framework was observed. The data indicated that the students viewed mathematics as learning how to do procedures. This philosophy of mathematics and the limited classroom discourse impeded progress towards learning other aspects of the Framework. Recommendations include changing classroom norms to foster more discussion and placing more emphasis on Framework-based understanding in the assessment structure and course grade.

Manuel de Falla
Drawing extensively on primary sources, this study in three parts provides a detailed biography, examines the most prominent aspects of Falla''s character as they pertained to his relationships with other composers and his own music, and sheds light on his creative process as a composer through examination of many of his works with reference to original scores and correspondence, many of which are published here for the first time. A chronological photo section rounds out this offering of great significance for music teachers and students as well as those with an interest in Spanish culture.
