Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Kulturwissenschaften - Sonstiges, Note: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Fachbereich für Sprache, Kultur, Translation), Veranstaltung: Nationalismus als erfolgreiches Identitätskonzept, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Darstellung des nationalen Arminius/Hermann Mythos in Denkmälern zu Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts im Rahmen des Nationsbildungsprozesses. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt bei der Symbolik und der Ikonografie, d.h. sie fragt einerseits, was symbolisiert Hermann für die Angehörigen der Nationalbewegung, und andererseits, wie wird er dargestellt. Dieser Zeitraum wurde ausgesucht, weil er den Anfang des deutschen Nationalbewusstseins und des Nationsbildungsprozesses darstellt. Für die Analyse der Ikonografie in Denkmälern werden folgende Beispiele herangezogen: das Detmolder Hermannsdenkmal und die Darstellung der Arminiusschlacht im nördlichen Giebelfeld der Walhalla. Dabei muss man zunächst auf die Frage eingehen, was nationale Mythen sind und welche Rolle sie in der Nationalbewegung zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts spielen. Es wird der aktuelle Forschungsstand zum Mythos anhand von Autoren wie Miroslav Hroch, Monika Flacke, Etienne François, Hagen Schulze und Hans Ulrich Wehler berücksichtigt. Danach stellt die Arbeit die Geschichte des Arminius vor und beschreibt, wie er zum Mythos und am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts ein Teil des nationalen Selbstbewusstseins wurde. Sie zeigt auch, wie Hermann Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts durch die Vertreter der Nationalbewegung in der Literatur dargestellt wurde. Die Symbolik wird anhand verschiedener Gedichte aus der Zeit der Napoleonischen Kriege und der Revolution von 1848 analysiert, um die Bedeutung des Mythos zu diesem Zeitpunkt zu zeigen. Da in der Lyrik die Emotionen am deutlichsten gezeigt werden, werden daraus die Beispiele für die Bedeutung des Hermannsmythos herangezogen. [...] Diese Arbeit soll an die Rolle der Mythen und insbesondere an den Hermannsmythos im Nationsbildungsprozess der Zeit erinnern, als das Nationskonzept nach und nach entstand und durch gemeinsame Vergangenheit, Werte, Kultur und Symbolfiguren, z. B. Nationalhelden, legitimiert werden musste. Sie wurden als Nationsväter identifiziert, und ihre Tugenden, z. B. ihre Intelligenz, Listigkeit oder Tapferkeit gegen die „Unterdrücker“ und Feinde des Vaterlands, egal ob Römer oder Franzosen, dienten als Verhaltensmuster.
