Montgomery''s mother died when she was an infant, and she was raised by her maternal grandparents. She attended a one-room schoolhouse from age 6 to 19, then earned a teacher''s license and studied literature at a university. Montgomery worked as a teacher for two years until the death of her grandfather. Following her grandfather''s death in 1898, Montgomery returned to her childhood home to care for her grandmother. She lived with her grandmother for the following 13 years and began her writing career.
