Set in the sixteenth century, this novel tells the story of Mari, a young Spanish-Indian servant girl in the Spanish colonial city of St. Augustine, in Florida. While searching the forest for one of the Spanish governor's missing goats, Mari sees a mysterious Indian shaman drinking from a cavern spring.
