Shuttling of Ions for Characterization of a Microfabricated Ion Trap

Shuttling of Ions for Characterization of a Microfabricated Ion Trap
In this thesis, I present experimental results demonstrating the characterization of a planar Paul trap. I discuss the theory of ion trapping and analyze the voltages required for shuttling. Next, the characteristics of a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) are calibrated, and this instrument is integrated into trapping experiments to test the viability of the analytic model. Combining theory with the capabilities of the DAC, I calculate that the new experimental system is capable of 3 nm-precision control of the ion. Taking advantage of this ion control, I present initial results for a lock-in micromotion detection method which minimizes stray fields around an 88Sr+ ion using Fourier analysis on the ion fluorescence to detect resonance at the secular frequencies. This method drives the ion oscillator across resonance using a superimposed radiofrequency electric field, which allows for off-axis field measurements as well as trap characterization. With this method, the secular frequencies of the trap are measured and are observed to fall within 3.50[sigma] of the analytic prediction.

Super Stocks

release date: Oct 12, 2007
Super Stocks
Target the Super Stocks that deliver huge returns One of the most successful investing books ever published, Super Stocks showed investors how to use innovative techniques and fundamental analysis for valuing stocks and predicting future profit margins. You''ll gain valuable insight into Fisher''s original thinkin for valuing stocks and predicting future profit margins. A pioneer in the use of the Price Sales Ratio-a powerful analytical tool-Fisher regales readers with instructive tales of the businesses he invested in and profited from. Super Stocks gives a historical perspective on how Fisher successfully researched companies and stocks—who he saw and what he asked—to get a better read on profitable returns. “As rich in investment war stories as it is in knowledge.”-The Motley Fool

Entropy Bounds and Entanglement

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Entropy Bounds and Entanglement
The generalized covariant entropy bound, or Bousso bound, is a holographic bound on the entropy of a region of space in a gravitational theory. It bounds the entropy passing through certain null surfaces. The bound remains nontrivial in the weak-gravity limit, and provides non-trivial constraints on the entropy of ordinary quantum states even in a regime where gravity is negligible. In the first half of this thesis, we present a proof of the Bousso bound in the weak-gravity regime within the framework of quantum field theory. The bound uses techniques from quantum information theory which relate the energy and entropy of quantum states. We present two proofs of the bound in free and interacting field theory. In the second half, we present a generalization of the Bousso bound called the quantum focussing conjecture. Our conjecture is a bound on the rate of entropy generation in a quantum field theory coupled semiclassically to gravity. The conjecture unifies and generalizes several ideas in holography. In particular, the quantum focussing conjecture implies a bound on entropies which is similar to, but subtly different from, the Bousso bound proven in the first half. The quantum focussing conjecture implies a novel non-gravitational energy condition, the quantum null energy condition, which gives a point-wise lower bound on the null-null component of the stress tensor of quantum matter. We give a proof of this bound in the context of free and superrenormalizable bosonic quantum field theory.
