The Woodlanders of Walden Hut

release date: Jan 01, 2023
The Woodlanders of Walden Hut
Claude Kinane, E. Brooke Nicholls and Charles Barrett rented a cottage on the Olinda Creek on the edge of Mt Evelyn, Lilydale and Mooroolbark between 1903 and 1907. The three men dubbed their cottage ''Walden Hut'' and called themselves ''The woodlanders''. Their writings appeared in detail in the New Idea. The aim of this book is to detail their place in the contexts of their initial obeisance to Thoreau; of their interactions with other Australian naturalists, particularly in Victoria; of their writings; and of their efforts to inspire the coming generations. In doing so, themes pertaining to nature writing in general are addressed. -- (p.4-5)

Glass Houses and Other Stories

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Glass Houses and Other Stories
"A crash site memorial for a daughter is disturbed by road workers, a son goes missing after an earthquake, a husband struggles with his wife going into dementia care, grandparents meet-up with a grandchild they lost contact with when his parents divorced, a late-in-life relationship is broken apart when his health declines, a couple who lease out their basement flat discover a former tenant has been linked to a murder ...Each of Karen Phillips’ stories is like the glass houses in the title story – small pieces, some opaque and some translucent, that offer glimpses of ordinary families whose lives are coming apart, sometimes in ways imperceptible to the outside eye. Memories of a kinder past are one way to pull things back together and simple humanity is another, but sometimes the answer is where you least expect it."--Publisher information.

Sweetness Begets Sweetness

release date: Mar 08, 2019
Sweetness Begets Sweetness
Mom taught me many valuable lessons, some of them having to do with daily tasks, some about relating to others, some about being self-determined and others just for fun. She was one of the most efficient and independent people I have ever known. She set the example for me about living and ultimately about dying. In her final years, she presented a strong front as that same woman who instructed us, disciplined us, and cared for us when we were young, began to lose her memory. This proud and capable woman was a victim of Alzheimer''s. The tables turned and this strong, independent woman was forced to become dependent in her final years.

It's All about Us (... Especially Me!)

release date: Feb 11, 2013
It's All about Us (... Especially Me!)
A write-right-in-it book to share with your friends. A Canadian Toy Testing Council 3-Star Award winner! A while back, we published a little book called It''s All About Me, a collection of personality quizzes for girls. Clearly we hit a sweet spot because today, half a million copies later, that book is still going strong. And now it''s getting a new best friend. It''s All About Us is a journal of super-nosey surveys for girls to fill out right in the book. Subjects range from food to fashion to friendship to the very tween "total randomosity." More than 300 different questions reveal everything you never thought to ask yourself, let alone anyone else. Since everything is better when you share, each survey is repeated three times, in three different colorways. Once you''ve taken a survey, turn the page and pass the journal and its matching pen to a friend. Or a relative. Or a brand-new acquaintance. Basically, anyone willing to share just a little too much information. Then compare results. The beauty of it is, even if the answers are different, everyone will still be right. Especially you. Previously published as What About You?

Coin Blasters Arcade
If any single, universal truth binds the brotherhood of man, it is this: Kids love hitting targets. Or at least aiming for them. Celebrate that shoot-''em-up energy with Coin Blasters, a collection of competitive table-top target games in a book. The coin blasters themselves are sturdy plastic chutes we''ve painstakingly custom-molded to hold a coin steady and upright on its edge. With a simple flick of a finger, and a smidgen of practice, anyone can send that coin zooming with surprising speed and accuracy straight at the target. And what targets! The book is full of awesome paper engineering, resulting in a wide array of games. Take slap shots at a hockey goalie, shoot baskets at the Hot Shot Blaster Hoop, knock the teeth out of a monster''s mouth, flick a nickel field foal, and rescue pennies from a well-protected, uber-fortified, piggy bank prison. Ten different games test your coin-blasting mastery and let you dominate the kitchen table. Now that''s how you manage your money.
