L'ours ! L'ours !

release date: Jan 07, 2025
L'ours ! L'ours !

Bear
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the celebrated author of Disappearing Earth comes a tale of family, obsession, and a mysterious creature in the woods—“a mesmerizing story about hope, sisterhood, and survival with a truly shocking twist at the end” (People, Book of the Week). NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE • A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BUZZ PICK! LONGLISTED FOR THE CAROL SHIELDS PRIZE FOR FICTION • A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR, Vulture, Chicago Public Library “Thrilling and propulsive, glorious and terrifying. Julia Phillips is a brilliant writer.”—Ann Patchett “Beautiful and haunting . . . this is brilliant.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) They were sisters and they would last past the end of time. Sam and Elena dream of another life. On the island off the coast of Washington where they were born and raised, they and their mother struggle to survive. Sam works on the ferry that delivers wealthy mainlanders to their vacation homes while Elena bartends at the local golf club, but even together they can’t earn enough to get by, stirring their frustration about the limits that shape their existence. Then one night on the boat, Sam spots a bear swimming the dark waters of the channel. Where is it going? What does it want? When the bear turns up by their home, Sam, terrified, is more convinced than ever that it’s time to leave the island. But Elena responds differently to the massive beast. Enchanted by its presence, she throws into doubt the desire to escape and puts their long-held dream in danger. A story about the bonds of sisterhood and the mysteries of the animals that live among us—and within us—Bear is a propulsive, mythical, richly imagined novel from one of the most acclaimed young writers in America.

Perché, come dice Alëna a Sofija: «Io ho te e tu hai me. Noi non siamo sole.»

Verdwijnende aarde

Verdwijnende aarde

Disappearing Earth
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • A propulsive, emotionally engaging debut novel about the intricate bonds of family and community, in a Russia unlike any we have seen before. “Superb.... Brilliant.... Phillips''s deep examination of loss and longing ... is a testament to the novel''s power.” —The New York Times Book Review One August afternoon, two sisters—Sophia, eight, and Alyona, eleven—go missing from a beach on the far-flung Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia. Taking us through the year that follows, Disappearing Earth enters the lives of women and girls in this tightly knit community who are connected by the crime: a witness, a neighbor, a detective, a mother. We are transported to vistas of rugged beauty—open expanses of tundra, soaring volcanoes, dense forests, the glassy seas that border Japan and Alaska—and into a region as complex as it is alluring, where social and ethnic tensions have long simmered, and where outsiders are often the first to be accused.

Maternal Personality Predicts Infant Regulation of Fear and Frustration

Maternal Personality Predicts Infant Regulation of Fear and Frustration
Difficulty with emotion regulation early in life can lead to poor developmental outcomes, such as childhood psychopathology. Therefore, it is important to identify factors associated with emotion regulation deficits earlier, rather than later. Research has indicated that infant emotion regulation develops within the context of the mother-infant attachment relationship, so factors, such as maternal personality that impact the security of this relationship may influence adaptive or maladaptive emotion regulation in infants. In light of this, the present study aimed to further explore how dysfunctional personality traits in mothers relates to infant regulation of fear and frustration. Participants were recruited from a large, ongoing longitudinal study. Four personality constructsnegative affect, neuroticism, psychoticism, and extraversionwere measured in mothers via self-reported questionnaire data. Infant emotion regulation was assessed by using respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during tasks designed to evoke fear and frustration when infants were 8-months- and 12-months-old. Results showed that infant RSA during fear-evoking tasks was positively associated with maternal irritability and psychoticism was augmented, suggesting poor regulation. Further, during fear-evoking tasks, infant RSA was negatively associated with maternal irritability and psychoticism, suggesting better regulation.

Happiness & Long-term Care

Happiness & Long-term Care
Although the vast majority of nursing home residents are 85 years old and over, recent advances in the medical treatment of traumatic brain injuries and other previous fatal illnesses have contributed to an increase of younger individuals being admitted to nursing homes. Younger individuals living in long-term care have differing needs from older adults because they seek control and flexibility with emphasis on living a productive and meaningful life. Younger residents report feeling "out of place" and without any age-appropriate services to utilize. Very little research has been done on the activities offered to younger residents in skilled nursing facilities. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of positive psychology activities with residents aged 45–79 living in a skilled nursing facility. Participants found the positive psychology group activities to be enjoyable and helpful for maintaining positive emotions. Participants found forgiveness and humor were found to be overall most helpful. This study provides some preliminary support for the use of positive psychology activities with younger residents in skilled nursing facilities to enrich the residents’ well-being.

You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again
“The Hollywood memoir that tells all . . . Sex. Drugs. Greed. Why, it sounds just like a movie.”—The New York Times Every memoir claims to bare it all, but Julia Phillips’s actually does. This is an addictive, gloves-off exposé from the producer of the classic films The Sting, Taxi Driver, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind—and the first woman ever to win an Academy Award for Best Picture—who made her name in Hollywood during the halcyon seventies and the yuppie-infested eighties and lived to tell the tale. Wickedly funny and surprisingly moving, You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again takes you on a trip through the dream-manufacturing capital of the world and into the vortex of drug addiction and rehab on the arm of one who saw it all, did it all, and took her leave. Praise for You''ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again “One of the most honest books ever written about one of the most dishonest towns ever created.”—The Boston Globe “Gossip too hot for even the National Enquirer . . . Julia Phillips is not so much Hollywood’s Boswell as its Dante.”—Los Angeles Magazine “A blistering look at La La Land.”—USA Today “One of the nastiest, tastiest tell-alls in showbiz history.”—People

Bound by Dragonsfyre
No one is safe when the dragon glides low over the Eighth Dominion. Not the high born who plot and spill blood. Not the low born who serve with one eye to the sky and the other glancing back. Young Scorpius is fetched from the estate nursery, once raised to live among the nobility--claimed finally not by his family, but by a falconer to serve as his apprentice. Teaching Jewish History
Inform your students'' lives with the richness of thousands of years of Jewish history, culture, and tradition. Teaching Jewish History tackles separately each of the key Jewish historical periods-Biblical, Rabbinic, Medieval, Early Modern, Enlightenment, and Modern, as well as the North American Jewish experience. The authors shift focus away from rote memorization of dates, names, and places, and instead examine each period through the lens of core historical concepts-the Diaspora, Covenant, acculturation, assimilation, and building community. History comes to life, helping students whether elementary, middle or high school, or adult develop a stronger Jewish identity. Teaching Jewish History gives teachers the tools to: Understand and explain the meaning of key concepts, terms, names, places, and events in each period of history. Identify and examine primary source documents and objects such as artifacts, diaries, sacred texts, photographs, and artwork. Conduct meaningful discussions of how the core concepts of Jewish history recur in and are relevant to each historical period. Develop a variety of activities including field trips, mock trials, oral histories, and role-playing activities. Place historical events on a timeline. Use additional historical and educational resources such as books, articles, videos, and Internet sites. Teaching Jewish History is an invaluable resource for the novice and the expert teacher of religious and day school children and for educators working with adults in synagogues, community centers, and family education programs.

The Phenomenon of Cyberstalking on the RIT Campus
"Stalking via the Internet (cyberstalking) occurs via technologies such as email, instant messaging, chat rooms, discussion groups, and social networking websites. Recent news reports indicate a growing concern about the ease with which personal information can be accessed on the Internet - a fact that is shaping new social norms for young adults and children who have grown up using the Internet. This thesis measured the prevalence and nature of cyberstalking among Rochester Institute of Technology students. A survey was conducted and the results were evaluated with SIDE theory and social conduct theory as guides to understand if cyberstalking behavior is becoming normalized among college students or if it is viewed as misbehavior"--Abstract.
