Persecuted from Within
Many Catholics have either left the Church or been scandalized by the errors and immorality that are rampant among her clergy. Moreover, we''ve watched aghast as faithful Catholics are punished without just cause, sometimes even for doing good. In this gripping book, the authors posit that the situation has become so absurd that the only people ever punished by the Church anymore are those least deserving. The combination of these two excesses has shaken the faith of millions. These fascinating pages aren''t another diatribe, however. You will be heartened amid current scandals and see how they are hardly unprecedented or unpredicted. Rather, they are a recurring feature of life in the Church throughout history and are even part of the divine plan. Most significantly, you will be able to clearly make sense out of and discover solutions to our present plight. You will learn about: The one place that the worst persecutions come from (Get ready!) Two false options in responding to the crisis of persecution in the Church Three fundamental features we learn from our Lord in persecution (Can you guess?) Practical ways that you can respond with in sharing the truth Two things that the saints compel us to do when experiencing persecution Achievable means to embolden your faith and remain obedient while correcting error You will see how ten of the greatest Catholics in history--the saints--suffered from undeserved persecution by the hierarchy and betrayal by clergy, and how this suffering was part of their sanctification and can serve as a heroic example to us today. You will be enthralled by the valor of priests from the earliest days of the Church to lay people from Saints Joan of Arc to Thomas More, and religious such as Saints Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Alphonsus Liguori, to modern day examples like St. Padre Pio and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. As you travel with them across twenty centuries and four continents, your devotion will increase, you will see the wisdom of the divine plan, and be encouraged to defend the Church through this present hour of darkness. Additionally, you will find a thorough and orthodox explanation of doctrine on Church authority, fraternal correction, and the virtue of obedience, as well as a practical plan to redeem this shameful chapter in Church history. This book stands as a valuable and lasting resource for pastors, catechists, and those who seek to "counsel the doubtful" and "comfort the afflicted."

The Tower

release date: Jan 01, 2023
The Tower
This is the beginning of a novel about a mixed-use development that is placed at the center of a city. The book follows the security updates that are put in place after a houseless man lives in one of the apartments for ten weeks before being caught. The book, when polished, will demonstrate the ways in which the built environment interacts with personal experience, highlight how we constantly trade privacy for protection in the digital age, and show that architecture leads (not follows).

A Literature Review of how Rehabilitation Programs and Education Decreases Recidivism Rate with a Scope to how Public Administrators Can Further Suppress the Recidivism Rate
The labor market inequalities within America are a community multi-faceted policy problem that unconsciously results in increasing the recidivism rate for previously incarcerated individuals. The status of being unemployed after being released from incarceration can either inspire a person to pursue a career or contribute to a person becoming economically unstable and at high risk of experiencing homelessness. Previously incarcerated individuals are subjected to recidivism within five years of being released, the individuals without financial assistance or available employment are likely within one month from being released to experience homelessness, and an increased potential of being arrested again. For an individual to be resentenced back to incarceration, it does not matriculate to cost-effective outcomes for their communities, families, or singular wellbeing. Some people deserve a second chance, sometimes even a 3rd, 4th, and 5th chance to turn their life around. Yet, majority of traditional punishment involves being convicted of a crime and sentenced, should individuals existing with mental conditions or neuropsychological disorders be given additional opportunities? Some will believe the 21st century society''s policy is against individuals redeveloping themselves in addition to having a criminal background post-incarceration. To resolve the type of changes required to suppress the recidivism rate, offer all individuals a chance to be integrated into their community, and resume an ordinary life Public Administrators need to address labor market policies, align rehabilitation programs to direct crimes, and provide educational resources for individuals recently released from incarceration. This graduate project will inform the reader how recidivism can continue to be decrease with new alternative programs; amendment legislations and policies regarding criminal history; identify how rehabilitation programs have a significant position on the ground level; the employment opportunities to implement; inform administrators about the work and education disparities for previous incarcerated individuals; the education effectiveness on inmates; and provide my findings of the literature study. The full study has been completed by reviewing databased literature including scholarly books, journal articles, dissertations, and government statistics all pertaining to the title. I will also define terms where needed and analyze the data to express research gaps discovered. I hope that the research would allow Public Administrators a view of how criminal history effects an individual livelihood, the benefits of decreasing jails/prisons population, and how to continuously decrease the recidivism rate.

Exertion (and What Follows)

Exertion (and What Follows)
Where do I even begin to discuss my process? As with all things artistic, it comes from experiences deep within, that manifest themselves over time. So, Exertion was several years, if not a lifetime, in the making. I had always been an anxious child all my life, but my experiences with mental illness didn''t truly begin until my freshman year of high school. From then on, it was a constant mixture of depression, anxiety, and obsessive thoughts, and how to navigate through adolescence with these in mind. They have become severe a couple of times, but fortunately I was able to receive professional help, and still continue to receive professional help as I navigate this journey. Depression is something that is so hard to put into words, and the imposter syndrome associated with it is incredibly frustrating. As I talk about it, sometimes I feel like I''m lying to people, or faking it, and that I don''t deserve the help and lenience I receive. It''s terrible. I wanted to show people what it is like.

Social and Academic Synergies in MIT's Mechanical Engineering Department for Empowering Twentieth-century Chinese Leaders

Social and Academic Synergies in MIT's Mechanical Engineering Department for Empowering Twentieth-century Chinese Leaders
Between 1854 and 1954, MIT awarded 734 degrees to students studying abroad from China, which is the third largest number among all American universities during this time period. Within the MIT Mechanical Engineering department, the number of students is well within the hundreds. While these students studied engineering topics uniquely influenced by the developments and needs of twentieth-century China, their courses of study were furthermore influenced by the tutelage they received from a small set of MIT professors willing to cross cultural gaps. These students also had support through affinity groups and made notable impacts on MIT''s social landscape during their time at the Institute. Finally, they went on to play significant roles in the subsequent industrialization of China. What, then, were the academic and social environments in the twentieth-century MIT Mechanical Engineering department that led to the successful graduation of students studying abroad from China, and what lessons can be applied to present-day MIT? Based on information from the 1931 MIT Chinese Students'' Directory, which provides data on Chinese students from 1877 to 1930, Chinese students'' social and academic presence at MIT was quantified, and efforts were made to identify their research advisors and academic mentors, and also to delineate what interpersonal relationships and connections existed between the faculty and the students. In the first decades of the twentieth century, several Mechanical Engineering professors took on more Chinese students than others, most notably, George B. Haven. From the analysis of 20+ theses written by these students between 1877 and 1931, the Mechanical Engineering faculty certainly rallied to support these students as they faced linguistic, cultural, and other challenges during their courses of study. This cohort of Chinese mechanical engineering students was responsible for inventing the first Chinese typewriter, doing the earliest mechanical tests on China-native materials such as ramie and bamboo, and was fundamental to the development of the Mechanical Engineering department at MIT''s sister school, Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The Foundations of a Nation
This paper explores the emerging integration of international relations theory with postcolonial scholarship and uses Pakistan''s state formation and history as a case study. It is argued that international relations theory privileges European experiences and history, which results in inaccurate assumptions about the outcomes of colonialism and origins of postcolonial independence. Pakistan''s unique development as a state founded on ideology and build out of an imperial/colonial system offers an opportunity for destabilizing Eurocentrism in international studies. Rather than favoring a singular outcome or conclusion, this paper demonstrates the plurality necessary for an inclusive historical analysis of state-power.

Coming Out and Losing Out

Coming Out and Losing Out
This thesis utilizes interviews completed on twenty homosexual, cisgender men who are in emerging adulthood to gain a better understanding of the ways in which family support functions, and can change at this lifestage. Unlike much of the previous research, this qualitative study argues that family support is not a question of simple acceptance or rejection, but is instead a complex combination of multiple forms of support, that can be lost or sustained for a multitude of reasons. Emerging adulthood is applied to show the benefits of family support during this life-stage, as well as to show the complexity of family support. This article identifies four main forms of family support: financial support, emotional support, romantic support, and social relationship support. Through analysis, this study shows that these forms of support can function independent of one another, and need to be studied in such a manner. Another aim is to show the need for taking the entire coming out process into analysis, and not to treat it as a single disclosure event. Examples are provided on how different steps of the coming out process affect different forms of support from these individual''s families. Many studies exist that show the effects that a lack of family support has for these individuals, but this work provides an understanding to the complex ways in which family support can be lost.

The Politics of Order: Ordo-liberalism from the Inter-war Period Through the Long 1970s

The Politics of Order: Ordo-liberalism from the Inter-war Period Through the Long 1970s
This dissertation examines the thought of the five principal thinkers of the distinctive German neo-liberal tradition of ordo-liberalism, a consistent and often prominent current in the intellectual life of the Bundesrepublik since the end of the Second World War. By way of intellectual profiles of these main figures, the dissertation shows that ordo-liberalism developed as a political rather than purely economic theory. Shaped by the double crisis of capitalism of the inter-war period - of inflation and global economic depression - it attempted a response to the failure of the liberalism of the time. From the 1920s, these thinkers sought institutional and social arrangements that would preserve the separation of economic and political spheres, which they believed to be the basic requirement of a functioning price mechanism. They achieved this by appeal to the state in its capacity to enforce this separation and regulate social life. The dissertation proceeds by close reading of the main texts of Walter Eucken (1891-1950) and Franz Bi hm (1895-1977), representatives of the Freiburg School who developed a method of political economy and constitutional legal theory that sought to isolate the economic responsibilities of the state from democratic pressure. The dissertation then turns to the sociological thinkers Wilhelm Ri pke (1899-1966) and Alexander Ri stow (1885-1963), and profiles their development of a theory of mass culture and the measures the state might take to reintroduce and preserve a politics of vitality to combat it. The concluding chapter, on Alfred Mi ller-Armack (1901-1978), theorist of capitalist crisis in the 1930s, economist of European integration within the Christian Democratic Union, and sociologist of religion, reconstructs his development of the social market economy and concludes with his response to the onset of the downturn of the 1970s. The dissertation shows that by various means, ordo-liberals of the first generation sought resolution to economic crisis directly through politics, and therefore were compelled to undertake comprehensive revision of liberal economics and political theory.

God, Israel, & You

God, Israel, & You
Issues like abortion, homosexuality, and old-young earth debate often drive wedges both between the church and the world. Another polarizing issue is the Arab-Israeli conflict. Evangelical support for Israel among the younger generation is dropping at an alarming rate. Why is there such division between the church and the world and even among believers themselves about this issue? God, Israel, and You attempts to bridge the gap by providing a courageous and honest look at Jesus, His involvement in the world, and how it relates to the issues of today. It makes the case for Israel by being pro-God and explaining His redemptive purposes for the Arabs to a new generation through scripture, history, and morality. Believers are called to be ready with an answer for the faith that is within us. God, Israel, and You is about answers; it''s about the knowledge of God, finding hope in this chaotic world, and recognizing the story where we find a faithful God who is intimately involved with the affairs of mankind. Rather than coming at the issues with an us-versus-them mentality, God, Israel, and You reveals a God who is involved, who gets His hands dirty, and embraces the paradoxes of the Bible: it is both straightforward and mysterious, accessible and infinite, supernatural and practical. When we can accept the supernatural, we can recognize that God is using both Jews and Arabs, and the next generation in a way that reflects the character of Jesus, and we can better understand God, Israel, and ourselves.

Causal Complexity and Comprehension of Evolution by Natural Selection

Causal Complexity and Comprehension of Evolution by Natural Selection
Learning the theory of evolution by natural selection has proven to be difficult for students and adults alike. This may be due, in part, to the finding that adults reject the existence of within-species variation. Within-species variation is a requirement if evolution is to occur. Individuals who reject within-species variation often times misconstrue the process of evolutionary change as not the survival of some members of the species at the expense of others, but rather as the gradual change of all members of the species simultaneously. In this manner, rejection of within-species variation leads to misconstruals and misunderstandings of the theory of evolution by natural selection. One proposal for this tendency to reject within-species variation is psychological essentialism, which proposes that individuals construe species as possessing an underlying essence, shared by all species members, determining the observable properties of that species. Here we propose an alternative explanation, which we term the causal complexity hypothesis. We posit that biases for single-cause explanations lead participants to reject within-species variation. We argue that these simpler causal structures make within-species variation probabilistically less likely. In Studies 1 and 2 we find evidence that not only are preferences for single-cause explanations correlated with decreased estimates of within-species variability, but that manipulating number of causes has a causal effect on variability judgments. In Study 3, we find that evolution comprehension also predicts performance on category identity tasks, and find some support for the proposal that this is also related to within-species variability and causal complexity. Overall, we find that our causal complexity hypothesis can account for individual differences in variability judgments, and may offer a target for interventions in the domain of evolution comprehension. However, whether a preference for single-cause explanations influences reasoning within intuitive biology beyond judgments of within-species variation remains an open question and direction for future studies.

Investigating Malt Inducing Premature Yeast Flocculation

Investigating Malt Inducing Premature Yeast Flocculation
Premature yeast flocculation (PYF) has proven to be troublesome for the malting and brewing industries. It causes production difficulties and quality issues characterized by poor attenuation and low yeast cell counts post-fermentation. These issues result in variability in fermentation and flavor profiles. For this reason it is critical for brewers to assess their malts for PYF potential. To test for PYF potential in malt, the industries rely on a variety of fermentation assays to indicate if a sample has PYF potential. This study used a modified miniature fermentation assay to determine if malt displays PYF potential and its associated threshold. In addition to traditional wort preparation methods, a wash technique was used to extract the PYF factor for use with synthetic wort. This modification to the assay eliminated the need for a controlled mashing device and reduced the amount of fine adjustments of the wort pre-fermentation to reach target start values. Control malt known to display no PYF attributes and PYF inducing malts were used in the study. To further our understanding of the PYF factor the "PYF Solution" extracted using the wash technique was subjected to various conditions pre-fermentation. The PYF Solution was mixed with the synthetic wort with varying ratios from 0-100% of the PYF solution (mixed with distilled water) to find the threshold at which PYF characteristics was displayed. The wort was treated with a combination of pre-fermentation boiling (60, 90, 120 minutes), chilling at 5°C and Freezing at - 30°C to further our understanding of the how these conditions affect the PYF factor. The trials were conducted using a 15 mL fermentation with a consistent temperature and pitch rate (21°C, 1.5 × 107 cells/mL). The change in absorbance and Plato was monitored throughout the fermentations. The control malt had no significant (Pu003e0.05) difference in absorbance and Plato measurements from PYF inducing malt when the synthetic wort had 70% PYF solution. Synthetic wort containing 70% PYF solution had significant (P0.05) differences from the control malt for both absorbance and Plato measurements. Boiling treatments alone did not produce significant (P0.05) differences in the trials. Boiling followed by chilling yielded the same results and did not have significant changes (Pu003e0.05) in fermentation characteristics. While most of the prefermentation treatments did not create differences in fermentation characteristics, boiling wort for u003e60 minutes and freezing before fermentation caused the u003e70% PYF solution to display the same fermentation characteristics as the control (Pu003e0.05). These findings show that the PYF inducing factor may be susceptible to further processing. This thesis established two further findings. First, that the factor causing PYF must meet a threshold before it affects fermentation characteristics. Second, mashing the PYF-inducing grain may not be absolutely crucial for testing PYF potential of malt.

Microfluidic Concentration Waveform Generator Based on Pulse Width Modulation

Microfluidic Concentration Waveform Generator Based on Pulse Width Modulation
Biological systems have complicated environmental conditions that can vary both spatially and temporally. This study presents a microfluidic platform that can generate concentration waveforms to further understand complex systems. A constant flow system using pulse width modulation (PWM) on a flow selection valve creates pulses of high concentration analyte which are passed through a first order low pass filter to remove undesired high frequency noise. The system is analogous to an electrical PWM digital to analog converter (DAC) where a digital signal is passed through a low pass filter to create the desired analog waveform by removing the high frequency components introduced by the higher frequency PWM. A glass to glass fabrication technique using an ultraviolet (UV) laser to cut channels was utilized to create different microfluidic modules consisting of filters, junctions, and mixers. The system is characterized by comparing numerous filters and mixers in terms of their transient and frequency responses. Finally, an application to melt a 26 base pair DNA into its individual single stranded sequences by modulating an ionic concentration waveform is introduced.

Landscape Change in the Great Gila Ecosystem

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Landscape Change in the Great Gila Ecosystem
In southwestern New Mexico, rural residential development is expanding within the Greater Gila Ecosystem (GGE), an ecologically and culturally vulnerable wilderness landscape that includes the Gila National Forest and adjacent privately owned lands. Thoughtful land management in the GGE is critical in order to maintain biodiversity, protect watersheds, and conserve working landscapes. However, the spatially explicit information needed to make informed management decisions is currently lacking. The objectives of this study were to 1) delineate a boundary for the GGE; 2) map development hotspots in the GGE with the aim of identifying study sites for land change research and 3) quantify land change rates and patterns for several sites within unprotected areas of the GGE. The GGE extent was delineated based on the ecological criteria of watersheds, historical fire, and contiguous habitat. Landsat imagery-based multi-date principal components analysis was used to identify land change hotspots (1984-2011) in the unprotected areas of the GGE. Multi-temporal (1945,1953,1976/1977, 1996/1997, 2011) high spatial resolution aerial photography was used to digitize detailed landscape data for three study sites. Land change intensity analysis was performed to detect the size and intensity of land changes, and landscape metrics were calculated to assess patterns over time. The extent of the GGE is 58% larger than the existing Gila National Forest. Three towns in the GGE were identified as hotspots: Pinos Altos, Mimbres-San Lorenzo, and Silver City. All three study sites exhibited a preponderance of natural (e.g. piñon-juniper woodland) to built-up (e.g. rural residential) land conversion, with the highest conversion rate between 1976 and 1996. Pinos Altos Largest patch index increased for Exurban lands 738% from 1945 to 2011, and decreased for piñon-juniper lands by 63% signaling a dramatic switch in land cover dominance. Mimbres-San Lorenzo number of patches nearly doubles from 1953 to 1996, and its Herbaceous Largest patch index dropped by 269% Silver city''s pinon-juniper woodland Edge Density Declined 47.7% from 1977 to 2011, with many of these changes occurring in the northern edges of the study site near the Gila National Forest. These changes in land patterns suggests that key species and ecological processes of the GGE are being compromised by habitat and landscape fragmentation. County planners, land managers, and conservation groups can use this critical information in order to help understand current, and prepare for future, landscape changes within the GGE.

The Origin of Genome Instability in Cancer
Under selective pressure, FHIT-deficient clones enabled by oncogenic mutations emerge with newly acquired precancerous phenotypes, suggesting that FHIT loss-induced genome instability facilitates tumorigenesis. Collectively, these findings support a model where loss of FHIT expression initiates genomic instability in dysplastic lesions, linking alterations at chromosome fragile sites to the origin of genome instability and cancer progression.

Quantum Jump Spectroscopy of a Single Electron in a New and Improved Apparatus
The 2008 measurement of the electron magnetic moment is the most precisely measured property of an elementary particle, with an astonishing precision of 0.28 parts per trillion. It makes possible the most precise determination of the fine structure constant and the most precise test of quantum electrodynamics and the Standard Model of particle physics. This thesis describes the installation of a new apparatus designed to have improved stability, more optimal control over the radiation field and inhibited spontaneous emission, and narrower resonance lines.

Family Environment and Adolescent Hopelessness in Low-income, Urban African American Families
Literature on the subject of adolescent development in high-risk, low-income neighborhoods has detailed negative consequences for mental health outcomes. These neighborhoods not only affect adolescents, but can increase stress and strain on families. Urban, African American families who reside in high-risk, low-income neighborhoods are not immune from the potential hazards of economic stress, strained familial relationships, social disorganization, and other negative consequences which impact optimal family functioning. Utilizing HLM techniques, this study examined the relationship between dimensions of the family environment and adolescent feelings of hopelessness. In general, a more supportive family environment resulted in lower scores of adolescent hopelessness. However, higher conflict in families also resulted in lower scores of adolescent hopelessness, indicating a need to further explore the nature of conflict in families who reside in high-risk neighborhoods. Directions for future research and implications for social work practice are outlined.

Spatial and Temporal Pricing Support for Consumer Services

Spatial and Temporal Pricing Support for Consumer Services
Consumer acceptance of buying goods and services online via the Internet is growing, although e-ecommerce has been mostly a mirror of traditional methods of pricing transactions -- fixed price or auctions. The proliferation of personal mobile devices with pervasive Internet access and localization capability means a richer set of pricing parameters can be used. Allowing buyers and sellers to more explicitly price requests and filter offers, including information about time and place, allows for better transaction results for both parties. This paper examines the impacts of including the time and place of performance of a service as part of the price. A system for implementation is proposed, a simulation of the system is evaluated, and the results presented.
