The Sermon on the Mount
John Wesley wrote this series of sermon commentaries to help people understand Jesus Sermon on the Mount. It took him over 15 years to complete this important work. Over time, changes within the English language caused some of these writings to be very difficult for the average person to read, and were really only suited for the most dedicated theologian. The Life of John Wesley Hardin

The Life of John Wesley Hardin
In an era and an area notable for badmen and gunslingers, John Wesley Hardin was perhaps the most notorious. Considered by many of his contemporaries to be almost illiterate, he nevertheless left for publication after his death in 1895 this autobiography, which, though biased, is remarkably accurate and readable. Hardin was born in 1853 in Bonham, Texas, the son of a Methodist preacher. His first brush with the law came at the age of fifteen when he killed a Negro during an altercation typical of the strife-torn Reconstruction era. In the ten years between his first killing in 1868 and his final capture and imprisonment, he killed more than a score of men in personal combat and became the "most wanted" fugitive of his time.

Politic Writings John Wesley

release date: Aug 15, 1998
Politic Writings John Wesley
The political writings of John Wesley (1703-1791) reveal a passionate campaigner engaged throughout his life with the care of the oppressed. His life was one of great paradox: as a high-churchman and Tory, living under the instruction of the Bible, tradition set him against radical change, yet few individuals could have been more responsible for upheaval in church and society. He believed scriptures set him against the cause of democracy, yet scarcely one other single person could have contributed more to its realization. His gospel religion inflamed in him an outrage at the social and political evils of his day that was barely matched by the more explicitly radical of his contemporaries. This volume collects addresses and pamphlets that capture Wesley''s views on a variety of political subjects including the nature of political power, his response to Richard Price''s Observations on Liberty, his views on slavery, on poverty, on the secession of the American colonies, and on the luxury of the rich. Together they make clear the relevance of Wesley to subsequent developments in the abolition of slavery and the evolution of labour politics. The book features an extensive new introduction by the editor. --includes extensive new introduction on the life of Wesley and the historical and intellectual context of the writings --all materials are reset --there are no modern publications of these texts apart from multi-volume collections of Wesley''s entire works --Wesley is an important figure in the study of the abolition of the slave trade

John Wesley's Sunday Service of the Methodists in North America

The Journal of John Wesley

release date: Jan 01, 1987
The Journal of John Wesley
Spanning some fifty-five years, John Wesley''s voluminous Journal records the daily tribulations experienced in traveling the length and breadth of the British Isles in the 18th century. These selections present an engrossing portrait of Wesley during the course of his travels and evangelical activities, illuminating the preacher''s views and opinions on a host of contemporary matters. Begun as a public vindication of his early spiritual and pastoral work in Oxford and America, Wesley''s journal became a means of keeping far-flung outposts of Methodism in touch with one another, a device for administering encouragement and rebukes, and a textbook of the experiential religion Wesley spent his life proclaiming. Wesley''s eclectic interests and passion for rational analysis also make the Journal a rich source for any reader interested in observing the conditions and values of Augustan society--particularly those of the lower classes--through the eyes of a well-educated and intelligent gentleman of the time.
