The Rolling Stones – Across The World

release date: Sep 10, 2021
The Rolling Stones – Across The World
If anyone tells you they saw the Rolling Stones on their first tour of America be prepared to either think they were very lucky or they may be confused. The Stones’ tour in June 1964 was a handful of gigs, watched by just a few fans. Yet, within less than a year, America became their second home, as the tours got longer and many of their iconic hits were recorded there. The Stones’ huge US tour in 1969 culminated in the fiasco of the Altamont Festival that could have finished a lesser band, yet it galvanized them into becoming a touring machine. Their 1970s shows became ever more lavish, decadent even, and their increasingly long tours of North America in the last three decades have taken touring to an industrial scale. Today, “The greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world” has been watched in concert by more people than any band in history…

Thirteen Going on Eighteen

release date: Aug 31, 2021
Thirteen Going on Eighteen
In the early to mid-1960s, John Stanley turned his attention to drawing and writing his own series rather than working with the already established licensed characters he is most well known for, such as Little Lulu. D+Qhas embarked on an archival series of Stanley''s comics, including Melvin Monster, Around the Block with Dunc and Loo, Kookie, and Thirteen Going on Eighteen. Thirteen Going on Eighteen focuses on the friendship and rivalry of two teenage girls, Val and Judy. Each comic is a darkly hilarious look at the socialmaneuverings and betrayals of the teen set.Stanley''s strippeddown approach perfectly captures the fever pitch of the teenage years. He creates a teenage sitcom and turns it into an anguished character study.

Tubby

release date: Jul 07, 2021
Tubby
The companion seriest to Stanley''s career defining Little Lulu Meet Tubby Tomkins, a mischievous gourmand, rabble rouser and schemer who, along with neighborhood buddies The Fellers, is continually at odds with the belligerent and thwarting West Side Boys headed by Wilbur Van Snobbe, the rich trickster who always gets the girl Tubby likes, Gloria Darling. From clubhouse standoffs to pogo stick time machines, the day is rarely long enough for the hilarious escapades and witty shenanigans that divert and preoccupy the epicurean Tubby and his pals. Consistently humorous and engaging, Tubby is a spirited voyage through the prototypal works of a preeminent storyteller. Tubby is the latest title in Drawn & Quarterly''s extensive reprinting of the work of 1960s cartoonist John Stanley, and it is elegantly designed by Canadian cartoonist Seth. Tubby collects issues 9 through 12 of the classic strip chronicling the tales of its namesake protagonist and is an offshoot from the wildly popular Little Lulu, Stanley''s career-defining work.

Cognition and Comprehension in Translational Hermeneutics

release date: Jun 01, 2021
Cognition and Comprehension in Translational Hermeneutics
The fundamental aim of translation studies in general is to better understand the practice of translation. Insofar as hermeneutics can be regarded as an approach to understanding the nature of understanding itself (and in this it finds alliances with phenomenology), the task of this volume is to demonstrate that hermeneutics can accordingly provide a means to better apprehend the subtle complexities of translation. At issue are translators’ myriad decisions, reactions, negotiations and compromises as they practice their craft. At stake is translation knowledge – what translators must know, how they know what they know, and how such savoir faire is deployed in specific instances of translation. Essays in this volume address the somatic and the cognitive, questions of experience and expertise, empirical practice, methodological protocols and suitable philosophical models in order to gain better insight into the challenging task of the translator. An additional highlight of this volume is the sustained assessment of Fritz Paepcke, one of the pioneers of what, today, is called translational hermeneutics, Paepcke being a scholar who proposed new ways to consider the delicate, but necessary negotiation between translation theory and translation practice. How Great Cities Happen

Project Planning and Management for Ecological Restoration

release date: Aug 21, 2014
Project Planning and Management for Ecological Restoration
Concern over climate change and the ongoing challenges of managing degraded ecosystems have made the field of ecological restoration a growing focus in the agendas of national and international conservation organizations, including the United Nations. The problems facing us are both complex and urgent, and effective solutions are needed. Project Planning and Management for Ecological Restoration presents principles of sound planning and management that will greatly increase the likelihood that completed projects will meet stakeholder expectations. John Rieger, John Stanley, and Ray Traynor have been involved in restoration activities for over thirty years and were part of the small group of restorationists who recognized the need for a professional organization and in 1987 founded the Society for Ecological Restoration. This book comes out of their experiences practicing restoration, conducting research, and developing and refining new techniques and methods. In the book, the authors describe a process for planning and managing an ecological restoration project using a simple, four-faceted approach: planning, design, implementation, and aftercare. Throughout, the authors show how to incorporate principles of landscape ecology, hydrology, soil science, wildlife biology, genetics, and other scientific disciplines into project design and implementation. Illustrations, checklists, and tables are included to help practitioners recognize and avoid potential problems that may arise. Project Planning and Management for Ecological Restoration provides a straightforward framework for developing and carrying out an ecological restoration project that has the highest potential for success. Professional and volunteer practitioners, land managers, and property owners can apply these guidelines to the wide variety of conditions and locations where restoration is needed. Long overdue, this book will inform and advance the effective practice of this rapidly expanding field.

Boundary Conditions for Bridge Scour Analysis

release date: Jan 01, 1999
Boundary Conditions for Bridge Scour Analysis
The purpose of this study is to determine surge hydrographs which may be used in the analysis of proposed and existing highway structures along Albemarle-Pamlico Sounds. Historical data for tropical storms over the period 1886-1996 were collected and analyzed to identify storms proximate to the project study area. Application of the process models (CE Wind Model and ADCIRC Model) and statistical models (EST) resulted in predicted surge values at 25, 50 and 100 year return periods. These peaks were then incorporated into synthetic time series used to characterize the shape of the design hydrograph. The results of the surge modeling suggest that the simple exponential form of the hydrograph, recommended by the FHWA pooled fund study ''Development of Hydraulic Computer Models to Analyze Tidal and Coastal Stream Hydraulic Conditions and Highway Structures'', may be inadequate to characterize stations which experience periods of negative surge. An empirical approach based on a damped sine wave was developed as an alternative. The recommended procedure for implementing the results of the study suggests that both types of hydrographs be modeled, with design parameters based on the worst-case conditions.
