The Beatitudes: Believer Happiness in a Postmodern Age

release date: May 23, 2019
The Beatitudes: Believer Happiness in a Postmodern Age
I had been accused by church leadership of preaching a more psychological rather than theological message but was this not what Jesus did the day He taught His disciples the secret to being happy? (Matthew 5:1-10 ?blessed? means ?happy?) The Beatitudes, as we called them are not attributes of God, nor do they represent the 10 commandments, nor are they fruit of the Spirit. The Beatitudes are no theology. They profile the heart of a follower of Christ whose focus is on following Him. A true follower stripped of all other passions is possessed of no other interest. There is no scripture more psychologically revealing of a true follower of Christ than here.

Understanding God: The Problem With Grace

release date: May 11, 2019
Understanding God: The Problem With Grace
This is a study in Grace. The language of the Scriptures had the added burden of speaking for God, representing His thoughts in some elementary form that would aid faith in seeking after Him. The culture of heaven, we can say with a prima facie reasonableness, is beyond the scope of the text. To explain the coming age in the language of this age is not the burden of Scripture. The Bible was written to promote the message of grace and our salvation, not in such terms that would make sense out of all that God purposes for us, His people, but the basic message to germinate faith in our hearts and give us the insight of hope for that world to come.

Challenged: Living Our Faith in a Post Modern Age

release date: Dec 03, 2019
Challenged: Living Our Faith in a Post Modern Age
My wife and I love our sons unconditionally and equally. Talking with one of them about his atheism has brought me to a new dimension in my relationship with him, to a review of my own christian beliefs, to a more critical examination of the church, and to a different understanding of ministry in today''s world. As personal as I make this all sound, my family represents a thousand families, a hundred thousand and more, who have sat in painful silence because religious differences have taken away their voice. They tire of confrontation, angry discussions, verse hurling and jabbing one another with theories over every conceivable divisive issue. It is a powerful idea that those who do not share our faith should know that we do, not so much in our argument as in our love. It is time to listen.

The Devil's picture-books

release date: Aug 21, 2022
The Devil's picture-books
In "The Devil''s Picture-Books," John King Mrs. Van Rensselaer delves into the murky waters of superstition and the occult, weaving a compelling narrative that explores the intersection of folklore and morality. The text is characterized by its rich, vivid prose that evokes a sense of eerie realism, situating itself within the Victorian literary context where fears of the supernatural often served as reflections of societal anxieties. Through a series of interconnected tales, Van Rensselaer challenges the reader to confront the darkness underlying human nature, employing allegory and symbolism to deepen the thematic content of his work. John King Mrs. Van Rensselaer was influenced by his diverse background as a historian, ethnographer, and novelist, which allowed him to approach the themes of superstition and belief systems with a critical yet empathetic lens. His experiences exploring rural America and its cultural practices helped him to frame these narratives in a way that is both accessible and thought-provoking. It is this unique blend of scholarship and storytelling that anchors his literary contributions, inviting readers to question their understandings of folklore and morality. This work is highly recommended for scholars and readers interested in the intricate relationships between folklore, morality, and cultural critique. Van Rensselaer''s deft handling of these themes, along with his innovative narrative style, promises to captivate those who seek deeper insight into the human experience and the shadows that dwell within it.

Tribal Leadership (Summary)

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Tribal Leadership (Summary)
getAbstract Summary: Get the key points from this book in less than 10 minutes.Tribes naturally form within organizations. Wherever people gather to live and work, groups of between 20 and 150 members coalesce - parallel to villages within nations - and go through five stages of development. Culture consultants David Logan and John King, writing with physician Halee Fischer-Wright, teach you how tribes and proficient tribal leadership can help you work and play well with others and bolster your career. The authors conducted extensive research on corporate tribes and interviewed many business leaders about the five-stage evolution of tribes within their organizations. Though the report seems somewhat less concrete in identifying exactly how people coalesce to form tribes, it is accessible reading, certainly compared to most organizational sociology. getAbstract finds that this exploration of tribes and teams can open readers'' eyes to the way people function within groups. Managers will find it revelatory, as will all those who can succeed only by working and playing well with others.Book Publisher:Copyright 2008 by David Logan and John King. Published by arrangement with HarperBusiness, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.
