For 15-year-old Joe Martin, growing up on the outskirts of West London, the summer of 1977 means punk rock, disco girls, stolen cars, social-club lager, Teddy Boys and a job with gypsies. Life is sweet - until he is attacked by a gang and thrown into the Grand Union Canal with his best friend Smiles. Fast forward to 1988, and Joe is travelling home after three years away, coming to terms with tragedy. Fast forward to 2000, and life is sweet once more. Human Punk is the story of punk, common bonds and a shared culture - sticking the boot in, sticking together.

My best poems, a few other matters I wished to share which includes a tribute to Daisy, someone who attended a church I pastored and who in a new way revealed God to me. Many of my poems are recently written but some date during my college years. I also included a concern to my book on "The Cross" which was not included in that work. It fits here because it is a personal thought on a most cherished event: Jesus'' crucifixion.

I had been accused by church leadership of preaching a more psychological rather than theological message but was this not what Jesus did the day He taught His disciples the secret to being happy? (Matthew 5:1-10 ?blessed? means ?happy?) The Beatitudes, as we called them are not attributes of God, nor do they represent the 10 commandments, nor are they fruit of the Spirit. The Beatitudes are no theology. They profile the heart of a follower of Christ whose focus is on following Him. A true follower stripped of all other passions is possessed of no other interest. There is no scripture more psychologically revealing of a true follower of Christ than here.

This is a study in Grace. The language of the Scriptures had the added burden of speaking for God, representing His thoughts in some elementary form that would aid faith in seeking after Him. The culture of heaven, we can say with a prima facie reasonableness, is beyond the scope of the text. To explain the coming age in the language of this age is not the burden of Scripture. The Bible was written to promote the message of grace and our salvation, not in such terms that would make sense out of all that God purposes for us, His people, but the basic message to germinate faith in our hearts and give us the insight of hope for that world to come.

My wife and I love our sons unconditionally and equally. Talking with one of them about his atheism has brought me to a new dimension in my relationship with him, to a review of my own christian beliefs, to a more critical examination of the church, and to a different understanding of ministry in today''s world. As personal as I make this all sound, my family represents a thousand families, a hundred thousand and more, who have sat in painful silence because religious differences have taken away their voice. They tire of confrontation, angry discussions, verse hurling and jabbing one another with theories over every conceivable divisive issue. It is a powerful idea that those who do not share our faith should know that we do, not so much in our argument as in our love. It is time to listen.
