Portal: San Francisco's Ferry Building and the Reinvention of American Cities

release date: Nov 07, 2023
Portal: San Francisco's Ferry Building and the Reinvention of American Cities
A New York Times Book Review Editors'' Choice “A window to the soul of a great city.” —Inga Saffron, Pulitzer Prize–winning architecture critic A two-time Pulitzer finalist explores the story of American urban design through San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building. Conceived in the Gilded Age, the Ferry Building opened in 1898 as San Francisco’s portal to the world—the terminus of the transcontinental railway and a showcase of civic ambition. In silent films and World’s Fair postcards, nothing said “San Francisco” more than its soaring clocktower. But as acclaimed architectural critic John King recounts in Portal, the rise of the automobile and double-deck freeways severed the city from its beloved structure and its waterfront—a connection that required generations to restore. King’s narrative spans the rise and fall and rebirth of the Ferry Building. Rich with feats of engineering and civic imagination, his story introduces colorful figures who fought to preserve the Ferry Building’s character (and the city’s soul)—from architect Arthur Page Brown and legendary columnist Herb Caen to poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Senator Dianne Feinstein. In King’s hands, the saga of the Ferry Building is a microcosm of a larger evolution along the waterfronts of cities everywhere. Portal traces the damage inflicted on historic neighborhoods and working dockyards by cars, highways, and top-down planning and “urban renewal.” But when an earthquake destroyed the Embarcadero Freeway, city residents seized the chance to reclaim their connection to the bay. Transporting readers across 125 years of history, this tour de force explores the tensions impacting urban infrastructure and public spaces, among them tourism, deindustrialization, development, and globalization. Portal culminates with a rich portrait of San Francisco’s vibrant esplanade today, visited by millions, even as sea level rise and earthquakes threaten a landmark that remains as vital as ever. A book for city lovers and visitors, architecture fans and pedestrians, Portal is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of San Francisco and the future of American cities.

H.B. Morse, Customs Commissioner and Historian of China

H.B. Morse, Customs Commissioner and Historian of China
Hosea Ballou Morse (1855-1934) sailed to China in 1874, and for the next thirty-five years he labored loyally in the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs Service, becoming one of its most able commissioners and acquiring a deep knowledge of China''s economy and foreign relations. After his retirement in 1909, Morse devoted himself to scholarship. He pioneered in the Western study of China''s foreign relations, weaving from the tangled threads of the Ch''ing dynasty''s foreign affairs several seminal interpretive histories, most notably his three-volume magnum opus, The International Relations of the Chinese Empire (1910-18). At the time of his death, Morse was considered the major historian of modern China in the English-speaking world, and his works played a profound role in shaping the contours of Western scholarship on China. Begun as a labor of love by his protégé, John King Fairbank, this lively biography based primarily on Morse''s vast collection of personal papers sheds light on many crucial events in modern Chinese history, as well as on the multifaceted Western role in late imperial China, and provides new insights into the beginnings of modern China studies in this country. Half-finished when Fairbank died, the project was completed by his colleagues, Martha Henderson Coolidge and Richard J. Smith.

Challenged: Living Our Faith in a Post Modern Age

release date: Dec 03, 2019
Challenged: Living Our Faith in a Post Modern Age
My wife and I love our sons unconditionally and equally. Talking with one of them about his atheism has brought me to a new dimension in my relationship with him, to a review of my own christian beliefs, to a more critical examination of the church, and to a different understanding of ministry in today''s world. As personal as I make this all sound, my family represents a thousand families, a hundred thousand and more, who have sat in painful silence because religious differences have taken away their voice. They tire of confrontation, angry discussions, verse hurling and jabbing one another with theories over every conceivable divisive issue. It is a powerful idea that those who do not share our faith should know that we do, not so much in our argument as in our love. It is time to listen.

The Beatitudes: Believer Happiness in a Postmodern Age

release date: May 23, 2019
The Beatitudes: Believer Happiness in a Postmodern Age
I had been accused by church leadership of preaching a more psychological rather than theological message but was this not what Jesus did the day He taught His disciples the secret to being happy? (Matthew 5:1-10 ?blessed? means ?happy?) The Beatitudes, as we called them are not attributes of God, nor do they represent the 10 commandments, nor are they fruit of the Spirit. The Beatitudes are no theology. They profile the heart of a follower of Christ whose focus is on following Him. A true follower stripped of all other passions is possessed of no other interest. There is no scripture more psychologically revealing of a true follower of Christ than here.

Understanding God: The Problem With Grace

release date: May 11, 2019
Understanding God: The Problem With Grace
This is a study in Grace. The language of the Scriptures had the added burden of speaking for God, representing His thoughts in some elementary form that would aid faith in seeking after Him. The culture of heaven, we can say with a prima facie reasonableness, is beyond the scope of the text. To explain the coming age in the language of this age is not the burden of Scripture. The Bible was written to promote the message of grace and our salvation, not in such terms that would make sense out of all that God purposes for us, His people, but the basic message to germinate faith in our hearts and give us the insight of hope for that world to come.

Poems & Things
My best poems, a few other matters I wished to share which includes a tribute to Daisy, someone who attended a church I pastored and who in a new way revealed God to me. Many of my poems are recently written but some date during my college years. I also included a concern to my book on "The Cross" which was not included in that work. It fits here because it is a personal thought on a most cherished event: Jesus'' crucifixion.

Prophetical, Educational and Playing Cards

release date: Mar 10, 2015
Prophetical, Educational and Playing Cards
"[...]the wishes of the gods be made known to mortals, through the medium of the priests of Mercury, Thoth, or Nebo. The intimate connection of the triple god is no fanciful suggestion, but is acknowledged by all students. Nebo, of the Babylonians (mentioned in the Bible), Thoth, of the Egyptians, and Hermes, of the Greeks, were all worshipped as gods of speech and inventors of transmitted ideas. It is not credible that in Asia or Africa, even as early as the twelfth dynasty, that voice language or speech was a gift newly granted to mankind, so there must have been some reason for the belief that “these gods gave speech to mankind.” This is one of the superstitions puzzling many modern students who have tried to investigate the mysteries of the Temple of Thoth. It is now believed that one of the priests who was connected with the cult conceived the bright idea of communicating[...]".

Tribal Leadership (Summary)

Tribal Leadership (Summary)
getAbstract Summary: Get the key points from this book in less than 10 minutes.Tribes naturally form within organizations. Wherever people gather to live and work, groups of between 20 and 150 members coalesce - parallel to villages within nations - and go through five stages of development. Culture consultants David Logan and John King, writing with physician Halee Fischer-Wright, teach you how tribes and proficient tribal leadership can help you work and play well with others and bolster your career. The authors conducted extensive research on corporate tribes and interviewed many business leaders about the five-stage evolution of tribes within their organizations. Though the report seems somewhat less concrete in identifying exactly how people coalesce to form tribes, it is accessible reading, certainly compared to most organizational sociology. getAbstract finds that this exploration of tribes and teams can open readers'' eyes to the way people function within groups. Managers will find it revelatory, as will all those who can succeed only by working and playing well with others.Book Publisher:Copyright 2008 by David Logan and John King. Published by arrangement with HarperBusiness, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

The ‘Ukulele

release date: May 31, 2012
The ‘Ukulele
Since its introduction to Hawai‘i in 1879, the ‘ukulele has been many things: a symbol of an island paradise; a tool of political protest; an instrument central to a rich musical culture; a musical joke; a highly sought-after collectible; a cheap airport souvenir; a lucrative industry; and the product of a remarkable synthesis of western and Pacific cultures. The ‘Ukulele: A History explores all of these facets, placing the instrument for the first time in a broad historical, cultural, and musical context. Drawing on a wealth of previously untapped sources, Jim Tranquada and John King tell the surprising story of how an obscure four-string folk guitar from Portugal became the national instrument of Hawai’i, of its subsequent rise and fall from international cultural phenomenon to “the Dangerfield of instruments,” and of the resurgence in popularity (and respect) it is currently enjoying among musicians from Thailand to Finland. The book shows how the technologies of successive generations (recorded music, radio, television, the Internet) have played critical roles in popularizing the ‘ukulele. Famous composers and entertainers (Queen Liliuokalani, Irving Berlin, Arthur Godfrey, Paul McCartney, SpongeBob SquarePants) and writers (Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, P. G. Wodehouse, Agatha Christie) wind their way through its history—as well as a host of outstanding Hawaiian musicians (Ernest Kaai, George Kia Nahaolelua, Samuel K. Kamakaia, Henry A. Peelua Bishaw). In telling the story of the ‘ukulele, Tranquada and King also present a sweeping history of modern Hawaiian music that spans more than two centuries, beginning with the introduction of western melody and harmony by missionaries to the Hawaiian music renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s.

Tribal Leadership Revised Edition

Tribal Leadership Revised Edition
It’s a fact of life: birds flock, fish school, people “tribe.” Malcolm Gladwell and other authors have written about how the fact that humans are genetically programmed to form “tribes” of 20-150 people has proven true throughout our species’ history. Every company in the word consists of an interconnected network of tribes (A tribe is defined as a group of between 20 and 150 people in which everyone knows everyone else, or at least knows of everyone else). In Tribal Leadership, Dave Logan, John King, and Halee Fischer-Wright show corporate leaders how to first assess their company’s tribal culture and then raise their companies’ tribes to unprecedented heights of success. In a rigorous eight-year study of approximately 24,000 people in over two dozen corporations, Logan, King, and Fischer-Wright discovered a common theme: the success of a company depends on its tribes, the strength of its tribes is determined by the tribal culture, and a thriving corporate culture can be established by an effective tribal leader. Tribal Leadership will show leaders how to employ their companies’ tribes to maximize productivity and profit: the author’s research, backed up with interviews ranging from Brian France (CEO of NASCAR) to “Dilbert” creator Scott Adams, shows that over three quarters of the organizations they’ve studied have tribal cultures that are adequate at best.

Headhunters

release date: Sep 30, 2011
Headhunters
Following on from his bestselling study of violence, The Football Factory, John King considers Britain''s other obsession - sex. Formed in the chemical mists of New Year''s Eve, The Sex Division sees the once sacred act of procreation at its most material, as five men devise a system based on the sexual act. In this lager-soaked league, the most that women can offer a man is 4 points - unless, that is, she leaves her handbag unattended... From its base in the asset-stripped, emotionally castrated 90s, Headhunters shows the dreams of The Sex Division members breaking through the heavy media cloud of anorexic pin-ups and paedophile fashion. A missing brother, prophetic visions, a love affair, and tit-for-tat confrontation draw the characters out into the open - revealing the men behind the machismo, their need for mutual respect, and their recognition of the hidden or suppressed affinities.

The United States and China, 4th Revised and Enlarged Edition
For generations scholars and the general public have looked to John King Fairbank for knowledge and insights about China. In four editions of this work he has provided these. Reviews of this book: "An indispensable book for thoughtful people." DD--New York Times Book Review "Fairbank provides a miraculously concise account of Chinese civilization from its foundations to the present day...Maps, photographs, and an 80-page bibliography make this an invaluable reference work." DD--New Republic "As useful and timely as when it first appeared in 1948. Written by America''s foremost China scholar, John Fairbank, the book addresses a popular, not the academic, audience. It offers a sweeping view of the Chinese polity from ancient times up to the recent, convoluted period of Western contact, spiced by the wit and insight into detail of a geographer who drew the maps himself...Yet the book offers much to the specialist as well as the layman. To the historian, a state-of-the-art review of the latest historical analysis of modern china...To the student, a cogent guide to the field...For the diplomat and businessman, the work explores that most intangible but also most influential area of human feeling between the two countries that has launched ventures and derailed them." DD--China Business Review "The best general introduction to the Chinese political system...A book of love and great learning." DD--Kirkus Reviews "Still flashes with brilliance in its latest (fourth) incarnation...With this latest edition of what is arguably the best guide to China in any language, American and other non-Chinese readers may finally catch a glimpse of the ''very complex'' Chinese way of life." DD--Asiaweek Literary Review "[Fairbank''s] ability to transcend the academic to write a highly readable, authoritative, information-packed, perceptive and analytical account of the Chinese is unsurpassed. This is must reading for all Asiaphiles." DD--Asia Mail

Presidents from Eisenhower through Johnson, 1953-1969

release date: Dec 30, 2005
Presidents from Eisenhower through Johnson, 1953-1969
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Communism and the Cold War pervaded almost every aspect of American policy and concern. Eisenhower''s Highway Act sought to strengthen America with the sort of roads system and military advantage Germany''s Autobahn provided in World War II; Kennedy looked to space, the Peace Corps, and the schools to improve America''s actual and perceived status in the eyes of the world; LBJ continually found concerns about Southeast Asia pressing in upon him notwithstanding his desire to found a new Great Society in the United States. However, despite the Cold War and demands of international politics, these three presidents were continually involved in critical debates about the domestic future of America, and their roles and victories in these debates have left deep impressions upon American society. This volume provides readers with access to the primary documents—both foreign and domestic—that reflect the debates that have had such a strong influence in shaping the United States. This resource covers thirty-two key issues and initiatives of the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson presidencies. An introductory overview of each president''s administration provides a useful window through which to assess the specific debates and documents addressed, and each of these individual issues is also supplemented by a brief introductory discussion. Among the issues covered are: Eisenhower''s attempt to establish a new look for national defense, the Eisenhower doctrine, and the National Defense Education Act; Kennedy''s Alliance for Progress and Peace Corps programs, his role in Cuba, his plans for America in space, and his work on arms control and the Limited Test Ban Treaty; and Johnson''s Civil Rights Act, Model Cities Program, war on poverty, and role in the ground and air wars in Vietnam. A timeline provides a chronological backdrop for the subject, and recommended readings following each section offer helpful direction for further study.

The novel works on three levels - past, present and future - as pensioner Bill Farrell remembers his war experiences in a London pub, Tommy Johnson fights his way through Holland and Germany for an England football match in Berlin, and Harry considers the future fuelled by doses of Dutch skunk and German speed. John King''s powerful new novel looks at notions of what it means to be English. Exploring stereotypes of language and nationalism, the primal pulls of lust and aggression, ENGLAND AWAY culminates in a unity of the tribes and a blitzkreig in the streets of Berlin.
