Vietnam Veterans Against the War Statement
The following is a transcript of a speech made by John Kerry delivered on Thursday, April 22, 1971 in front of the U.S. senate. It was part of the set of U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on Vietnam collectively referred to as the Fulbright Hearings, conducted between 1966 and 1971. Kerry was speaking on behalf of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, an American tax-exempt non-profit organization and corporation founded in 1967 to oppose the United States policy and participation in the Vietnam War.

A Network-based Analysis of Student Learning Trajectories and Andragogical Design

release date: Jan 01, 2022
A Network-based Analysis of Student Learning Trajectories and Andragogical Design
The core goal of this thesis project is to formalize the complex system that exists naturally in a formal classroom environment. The three factors that are considered in this study are the roles of the student, the roles of the teacher, and the respective environments from which these members arise and how these act as determinants of curriculum development and design. At the curricular scale, educational practices should be treated as a complex system composed of various inherently connected concepts and exchanges of ideas and ways of knowing. This synthesis of previous work and ongoing research efforts employs a network theory mediated analysis to investigate the affordances of curriculum and, in particular, its alignment with student learning processes. Via the utilization of various lenses of network theory, connected curriculum design, and modern learning curve theory, this body of research generates the postulate that education is inherently a complex system at various scales and stages of the learning process. Therefore, the task of a proper educator lies in elucidating these connections and helping students make their own connections. A network theoretic perspective of the precalculus curriculum proves to be helpful in identifying and motivating key features of the subject as they appear in course texts. Of these, hubs and time-series developments of relevant computed metrics have been particularly useful in mapping the alignment between the preset goals of the precalculus course, as identified in previous literature and execution of taxonomic principles. At the same time, this analysis has also been valuable in identifying the trajectory of the textbook curricula to adequately prepare precalculus students for success in calculus and beyond. Highly successful texts retain inherent commonalities, including the display of a power law with respect to frequency distribution of connected topics (a = 0.05). The most well-connected topics (hubs) are regarded as necessary markers of classroom discourse, and the extent to which they are considered in taxonomical goals is measured with respect to the empirical distributions of both the intended curriculum and enacted curriculum. Moreover, the implications of this work seek to assist in the optimization of the complex system synthesizing various feedback-based designs within educator roles, student response, and the interactions between the two as they pertain to various stages of the curriculum development process. This allows both students and educators alike to personalize learning through standardized exhaustive procedure and provide an equity-based environment conducive towards ''meaning making'' or assigning new meaning from the foundation of old ideas. The results of this study aim to not only provide a deeper understanding of how intended and enacted curriculums interact with each other, but also considers to what extent the components of an andragogical system can be refined via the magnitude of their presence in both course materials and feedback provided directly by active participants in the learning environment.

Every Day Is Extra

release date: Nov 12, 2019
Every Day Is Extra
An instant New York Times bestseller, John Kerry’s revealing memoir offers “a detailed record of an important life…frank, thoughtful, and clearly written…A bittersweet reminder of what the country once demanded of its leaders” (The New York Times Book Review). Every Day Is Extra is John Kerry’s candid personal story. A Yale graduate, Kerry enlisted in the US Navy in 1966, and served in Vietnam. He returned home highly decorated but disillusioned, and he testified powerfully before Congress as a young veteran opposed to the war. Kerry was elected to the Senate in 1984, eventually serving five terms. In 2004 he was the Democratic presidential nominee and came within one state—Ohio—of winning. He succeeded Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State in 2013. In that position he tried to find peace in the Middle East; dealt with the Syrian civil war while combatting ISIS; and negotiated the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate agreement. “In these pages Kerry shows remarkable honesty, depth, even spirituality…There is remarkable poignancy—not the usual currency of the career politician and the country’s top diplomat” (The Boston Globe). A witness to some of the most important events of our recent history, Kerry tells wonderful stories about colleagues Ted Kennedy and John McCain, as well as President Obama and other major figures. He writes movingly of recovering his faith while in the Senate, and how he deplores the hyper-partisanship that has infected Washington. Every Day Is Extra “draws back the curtain on a life you thought you knew, but turns out to be a bit different…A surprisingly personal book” (The Washington Post) that shows Kerry for the dedicated, witty, and authentic man that he is and provides forceful testimony for the importance of diplomacy and American leadership to address the increasingly complex challenges of a more globalized world.

The BCCI Affair: A Report to the Committee on Foreign Relations

The BCCI Affair: A Report to the Committee on Foreign Relations
"The Bank of Credit and Commerce International remains today, 30 years after its founding, a byword for corruption, influence peddling, bribery, crony capitalism, phony audits, money laundering, and worse. It managed to stave off crises with "too big to fail" arguments and friends in high places. Here, in full documentary splendor, we see the genesis of the term "bankster" and the stunning failure of the same roster of government agencies caught napping before the panic of 2008. This December 1992 document is the final draft of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee report. It was released by Congress but co-author Sen. Hank Brown, reportedly acting at the behest of Henry Kissinger, pressed for the deletion of a few passages, particularly re: Kissinger Associates. As a result, the final hardcopy version of the report, as published originally by the Government Printing Office, is less complete than the version you now hold in your hands. Long out of print and available only electronically, this report is here presented in a new edition designed for readability and easy reference." -- Page [4] of cover.

A Call to Service

release date: Jul 06, 2004
A Call to Service
In more than three decades of public service, from the battlefields of Vietnam to the floor of the U.S. Senate, John Kerry has proven himself to be one of our country’s great statesmen. A leader noted as much for his independence as for his integrity, he has always been inspired by the principles of democracy to fight to hold the political system accountable, to make it a government that is truly of its people and for its people. A Call to Service is Senator Kerry’s vision for America, reaching across partisan and ideological divides to identify the common ground of our ideals, values, and experiences, and in that common ground finding the inspiration to address the six critical challenges that face us all. Those challenges—a multilateral policy for defining a role for America on the world stage, a productive economy that benefits everyone, an education system that prepares our young for the future, a health-care system that is both affordable and of the highest quality, an energy plan that protects the environment and enables us to achieve energy independence, and the revival of committed citizenship—are united by the common element of service. The call to service is nothing less than a call to rebuild the commonwealth, a call upon the greatest resource we have, our people, to fulfill its vast potential for achievement and to make our great country even greater.
