Lamia (Annotated)

Lamia (Annotated)
Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-John Keats (London, October 31, 1795-Rome, February 23, 1821) was one of the leading British poets of Romanticism. During his short life his work was the object of constant attacks and it was not until much later that it was completely claimed. Keats''s lyrics are characterized by an exuberant and imaginative language, tempered by melancholy. Keats often had the feeling of working in the shadow of the great poets of the past and only towards the end of his short-lived life, when he felt the darkness of death near, was he able to produce his most authentic and memorable poems. He was born in the Finsbury Pavement, on the outskirts of London; his father owned a stable and died from the fall of a horse in 1803, when the poet was only seven years old.Her mother remarried immediately, but this second marriage was unhappy and the mother soon abandoned her second husband and moved to live at Keats'' grandmother''s house in Enfield with John, her sister, and three other brothers, of whom one soon died. There the poet went to a good school and before the age of fifteen he was already steeped in classics and translated Virgil; however, the mother died in 1810 of tuberculosis.

John Keats - Endymion
Keats. The name is synonymous with great romantic poetry and great romantic poets. A short life but a legacy of works that few if any can rival. And of course his end was to be tragically romantic. Keats was returning one night to his home in Hampstead when he coughed. He coughed a single drop of blue blood upon his hand and said ''I know the colour of that blood, it is arterial blood, it is my death warrant, I must die. And so it was that tuberculosis took its slow devastating hold. He moved to Rome hoping the warmer climate would help but died at age 25 in 1821.

It soon became one of his 1819 odes and was first published in Annals of the Fine Arts the following July. "Ode to a Nightingale" is a personal poem that describes Keats''s journey into the state of Negative Capability. The tone of the poem rejects the optimistic pursuit of pleasure found within Keats''s earlier poems and explores the themes of nature, transience and mortality, the latter being particularly personal to Keats. The nightingale described within the poem experiences a type of death but does not actually die. Instead, the songbird is capable of living through its song, which is a fate that humans cannot expect. John Keats (1795-1821) was an English Romantic poet. They Fought Alone

release date: Nov 06, 2015
They Fought Alone
The time: 1942. The place: The Japanese-occupied island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The Story: A stirring true account of a man who refused to be defeated. When the American forces in the Philippines surrendered in May, 1942, a mining engineer named Wendell Fertig chose to take his chances in the jungle. What happened to him during nearly three years far behind enemy lines is the amazing story that John Keats tells in They Fought Alone. For Fertig, with the aid of a handful of Americans who also refused to surrender, led thousands of Filipinos in a seemingly hopeless war against the Japanese. They made bullets from curtain rods; telegraph wire from iron fence. They fought off sickness, despair and rebellion within their own forces. Their homemade communications were MacArthur’s eyes and ears in the Philippines. When the Americans finally returned to Mindanao, they found Fertig virtually in control of one of the world’s largest islands, commanding an army of 35,000 men, and at the head of a civil government with its own post office, law courts, currency, factories, and hospitals. John Keats, who also served in the Philippines, has captured all the pain, brutality, and courage of this incredible drama, in which many memorable men and women play their parts. But They Fought Alone is essentially the story of one man—a testament to the ingenuity and sheer guts of an authentic American hero. “This remarkable story of guerrilla fighting in the Philippines during WWII...it is absorbing reading. . . . More remarkable still, though it contains death, torture, and desolation, it bubbles with humor.” —S. L. A. Marshall, The NY Times Book Review “A true and admirably researched account of an American hero who refused to accept defeat. His courage was incredible and his resourcefulness equally so. . . . I have read scores of books in this genre and Keats’ is one of the best.” —Chicago Tribune

Endymion A Poetic Romance - Keats John

Endymion A Poetic Romance - Keats John
A passage from the book... Knowing within myself the manner in which this Poem has been produced, it is not without a feeling of regret that I make it public. What manner I mean, will be quite clear to the reader, who must soon perceive great inexperience, immaturity, and every error denoting a feverish attempt, rather than a deed accomplished. The two first books, and indeed the two last, I feel sensible are not of such completion as to warrant their passing the press; nor should they if I thought a year''s castigation would do them any good;-it will not: the foundations are too sandy. It is just that this youngster should die away: a sad thought for me, if I had not some hope that while it is dwindling I may be plotting, and fitting myself for verses fit to live. This may be speaking too presumptuously, and may deserve a punishment: but no feeling man will be forward to inflict it: he will leave me alone, with the conviction that there is not a fiercer hell than the failure in a great object. This is not written with the least atom of purpose to forestall criticisms of course, but from the desire I have to conciliate men who are competent to look, and who do look with a zealous eye, to the honour of English literature. The imagination of a boy is healthy, and the mature imagination of a man is healthy; but there is a space of life between, in which the soul is in a ferment, the character undecided, the way of life uncertain, the ambition thick-sighted: thence proceeds mawkishness, and all the thousand bitters which those men I speak of must necessarily taste in going over the following pages.I hope I have not in too late a day touched the beautiful mythology of Greece, and dulled its brightness: for I wish to try once more, before I bid it farewel.

Complete Poems and Selected Letters of John Keats

Complete Poems and Selected Letters of John Keats
''I think I shall be among the English Poets after my death,'' John Keats soberly prophesied in 1818 as he started writing the blankverse epic Hyperion. Today he endures as the archetypal Romantic genius who explored the limits of the imagination and celebrated the pleasures of the senses but suffered a tragic early death. Edmund Wilson counted him as ''one of the half dozen greatest English writers,'' and T. S. Eliot has paid tribute to the Shakespearean quality of Keats''s greatness. Indeed, his work has survived better than that of any of his contemporaries the devaluation of Romantic poetry that began early in this century. This Modern Library edition contains all of Keats''s magnificent verse: ''Lamia,'' ''Isabella,'' and ''The Eve of St. Agnes''; his sonnets and odes; the allegorical romance Endymion; and the five-act poetic tragedy Otho the Great. Presented as well are the famous posthumous and fugitive poems, including the fragmentary ''The Eve of Saint Mark'' and the great ''La Belle Dame sans Merci,'' perhaps the most distinguished literary ballad in the language. ''No one else in English poetry, save Shakespeare, has in expression quite the fascinating felicity of Keats, his perception of loveliness,'' said Matthew Arnold. ''In the faculty of naturalistic interpretation, in what we call natural magic, he ranks with Shakespeare.''

The Complete Poetical Works and Letters of John Keats
In the few short years of his life John Keats created lasting images of beauty. He wrote with a firm touch, with rich yet controlled imagination, with a joyous delight in nature. He possessed an instant alchemy by which he transmuted all sights and sounds into poetry. Voracious reading set him standards rather than furnished him models, and he strove to perfect his poetry through constant creative revision. He pleaded for freedom of imagination as opposed to the constraints of the school of Pope. He traveled widely in a futile search for health. Finally, in Rome, at the age of twenty-five, John Keats died of consumption. -- From publisher''s description.
