America's Best, Britain's Finest

release date: Mar 01, 2006
America's Best, Britain's Finest
What is a mixed movie? A film to which artists of various nationalities contribute. Popular examples are "Land of the Pharaohs," "The Bridge on the River Kwai," "Casino Royale" and "The Sundowners." British players like Errol Flynn, Stewart Granger, Rex Harrison and James Mason have always been welcome in Hollywood. Not so well known are the numerous examples of American actors who lent their talents to British films, such as Robert Ayres, Phyllis Kirk, Mona Freeman, Frank Sinatra, Carol Lynley, William Bendix, Russ Tamblyn, William Holden, Raquel Welch, Joan Crawford, Gene Tierney, Van Johnson, Vincent Price, Tab Hunter, Alex Nicol, Zachary Scott, and Wayne Morris, to mention but a few such appearances that are detailed in this book.

Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality

Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality
When on May 15, 1918 a French lieutenant warned Henry Johnson of the 369th to move back because of a possible enemy raid, Johnson reportedly replied: "I''m an American, and I never retreat." The story, even if apocryphal, captures the mythic status of the Harlem Rattlers, the AfricanAmerican combat unit that grew out of the 15th New York National Guard, who were said to have never lost a man to capture or a foot of ground that had been taken. It also, in its insistence on American identity, points to a truth at the heart of this book--more than fighting to make the world safe for democracy, the black men of the 369th fought to convince America to live up to its democratic promise. It is this aspect of the storied regiment''s history--its place within the larger movement of African Americans for full citizenship in the face of virulent racism--that Harlem''s Rattlers and the Great War brings to the fore. With sweeping vision, historical precision, and unparalleled research, this book will stand as the definitive study of the 369th. Though discussed in numerous histories and featured in popular culture (most famously the film Stormy Weather and the novel Jazz), the 369th has become more a matter of mythology than grounded, factually accurate history--a situation that authors Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr. set out to right. Their book--which eschews the regiment''s famous nickname, the "Harlem Hellfighters," a name never embraced by the unit itself--tells the full story of the self-proclaimed Harlem Rattlers. Combining the "fighting focus" of military history with the insights of social commentary, Harlem''s Rattlers and the Great War reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th. The authors take up the internal dynamics of the regiment as well as external pressures, paying particular attention to the environment created by the presence of both black and white officers in the unit. They also explore the role of women--in particular, the Women''s Auxiliary of the 369th--as partners in the struggle for full citizenship. From its beginnings in the 15th New York National Guard through its training in the explosive atmosphere in the South, its singular performance in the French army during World War I, and the pathos of postwar adjustment--this book reveals as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers'' experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equality--and its full importance in our understanding of American history.

The World Trading System

release date: Jan 01, 1997
The World Trading System
Since the first edition of The World Trading System was published in 1989, the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations has been completed, and most governments have ratified and are in the process of implementing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). In the Uruguay Round, more than 120 nations negotiated for over eight years, to produce a document of some 26,000 pages. This new edition of The World Trading System takes account of these and other developments. Like the first edition, however, its treatment of topical issues is grounded in the fundamental legal, constitutional, institutional, and political realities that mold trade policy. Thus the book continues to serve as an introduction to the study of trade law and policy. Two basic premises of The World Trading System are that economic concerns are central to foreign affairs, and that national economies are growing more interdependent. The author presents the economic principles of international trade policy and then examines how they operate under real- world constraints. In particular, he examines the extremely elaborate system of rules that governs international economic relations. Until now, the bulk of international trade policy has addressed trade in goods; issues inadequately addressed by policy include trade in services, intellectual property rights, certain investment measures, and agriculture. The author highlights the tension between legal rules, designed to create predictability and stability, and the governments need to make exceptions to solve short-term problems. He also looks at weaknesses of international trade policy, especially as it applies to developing countries and economies in transition. He concludes with a look at issues that will shape international trade policy well into the twenty-first century.

The Menzies Era

The Menzies Era
An assessment of Australia''s longest-serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, by John Howard, Australia''s second-longest serving Prime Minister, this is a significant, unique and fascinating history of the Menzies era - a time that laid the foundations for modern Australia. ''Engaging and revealing ... like a torchlight shone from an unexpected angle'' Geoffrey Blainey, Weekend Australian Fresh from the success of his phenomenal bestselling memoir, LAZARUS RISING, which has sold over 100,000 copies, John Howard now turns his attention to one of the most extraordinary periods in Australian history, the Menzies era, canvassing the longest unbroken period of government for one side of politics in Australia''s history. The monumental Sir Robert Menzies held power for a total of over 18 years, making him the longest-serving Australian Prime Minister. During his second term as Prime Minister, a term of over sixteen years - by far the longest unbroken tenure in that office - Menzies dominated Australian politics like no one else has ever done before or since, and these years laid the foundations for modern Australia. The Menzies era saw huge economic growth, social change and considerable political turmoil. Covering the impact of the great Labor split of 1955 as well as the recovery of the Labor Party under Whitlam''s leadership in the late 1960s and the impact of the Vietnam War on Australian politics, this magisterial book offers a comprehensive assessment of the importance of the Menzies era in Australian life, history and politics. John Howard, only ten when Menzies rose to power, and in young adulthood when the Menzies era came to an end, saw Menzies as an inspiration and a role model. His unique insights and thoughtful analysis into Menzies the man, the politician, and his legacy make this a fascinating, highly significant book. The Politics of Jesus

The Politics of Jesus
Tradition has painted a portrait of a Savior who stands aloof from governmental concerns and who calls his disciples to an apolitical life. But such a picture of Jesus is far from accurate, according to John Howard Yoder. This watershed work in New Testament ethics leads us to a Savior who was deeply concerned with the agenda of politics and the related issues of power, status, and right relations. By canvassing Luke''s Gospel, Yoder argues convincingly that the true impact of Jesus'' life and ministry on his disciples'' social behavior points to a specific kind of Christian pacifism in which "the cross of Christ is the model of Christian social efficacy." This second edition of The Politics of Jesus provides up-to-date interaction with recent publications that touch on Yoder''s timely topic. Following most of the chapters are new "epilogues" summarizing research conducted during the last two decades - research that continues to support the outstanding insights set forth in Yoder''s original work.

The Death Penalty Debate

release date: Jan 01, 1991
The Death Penalty Debate
After several decades of judicial and legislative rulings outlawing capital punishment, American sentiment in recent times has swung in favor of the death penalty. Candidates in major political races across the land now expect to win votes by bragging about how many criminals they have sent to death row. Opponents of capital punishment, however, are far from silent. They insist that the death penalty violates the Christian''s high view of life. How, they ask, can a person who believes in the forgiveness of sins and the grace of God advocate another human being''s death? In The Death of Penalty Debate two respected authors, H. Wayne House and John Howard Yoder, lay before us the pro and con arguments on the validity of capital punishment. Beginning with Genesis 9:6, both men trace the historical and scriptural ideas for and against the death penalty. In the course of their discussion, they raise compelling questions: Does the death penalty work? Is it immoral? Who should be put to death and for what crimes? Does a crime-threatened society need the death penalty for its own protection? What do Moses and Jesus and the apostles say to guide us in forming our own ideas on this matter? Addressing these questions and many others. House and Yoder in this carefully documented volume capably present the strongest arguments on both sides of the capital punishment issue. The Death Penalty Debate is a valuable guide which will aid readers in making up their minds on this timely and crucial issue. A helpful annotated bibliography is included. -- from back cover.

Success in the Cinema MoneyMaking Movies

release date: Jun 01, 2006
Success in the Cinema MoneyMaking Movies
Basically, there are three measures of success in the cinema. First off are pictures like "The Crowd" and "Applause" that achieve rave reviews and even go on to win awards, but don''t recover their negative costs. Then there are the movies the critics hate, but the public enjoys. All three versions of "Back Street", for instance. Finally come the pictures everyone loves, like "From Here To Eternity" or "Sunset Boulevard". In the annals of success in Hollywood''s Golden Age, one name stands out above all others: Cecil B. DeMille. His famous pictures reviewed here include both versions of "The Buccaneer", "The Crusades", "Sign of the Cross", "The Story of Dr Wassell" and "Union Pacific". But the book also notes a DeMille "B" movie that tied up a fair amount of money but proved so unpopular it was released in some territories as a support. The book also covers some of Hollywood''s other disastrous failures, including the M-G-M movie that cost over $4 million to make and returned virtually nothing.

Felling & Pining

Felling & Pining
‘Felling & Pining’ depicts life, death, faith, and doubt in the poorest and most pious parts of the United States. With 430 original color images, John Howard looks back to 19th and 20th century southern communities, examines present-day legacies, and “pines forward”—not toward a heavenly afterlife but a near future rife with progressive possibility. The photobook contrasts nature’s beauty with bleak histories of Native American expulsion, African American slavery, pernicious labor exploitation, and persistent environmental degradation, insisting that we can and must do better. Punctuated with warm portraits of the Deep South’s diverse peoples, it honors their forebears and holds out hope for their heirs. ‘Felling & Pining’ is an unusual and impassioned visual plea for social and economic justice.

Coming of Age in Ancient Greece

Coming of Age in Ancient Greece
What was childhood like in ancient Greece? What activities and games did Greek children embrace? How were they schooled and what religious and ceremonial rites of passage were key to their development? These fascinating questions and many more are answered in this groundbreaking book--the first English-language study to feature and discuss imagery and artifacts relating to childhood in ancient Greece.Coming of Age in Ancient Greece shows that the Greeks were the first culture to represent children and their activities naturalistically in their art. Here we learn about depictions of children in myth as well as life, from infancy to adolescence. This beautifully illustrated book features such archaeological artifacts as toys and gaming pieces alongside images of them in use by children on ancient vases, coins, terracotta figurines, bronze and stone sculpture, and marble grave monuments. Essays by eminent scholars in the fields of Greek social history, literature, archaeology, anthropology, and art history discuss a wide range of topics, including the burgeoning role of childhood studies in interdisciplinary studies; the status of children in Greek culture; the evolution of attitudes toward children from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period as documented by literature and art; the relationships of fathers and sons and mothers and daughters; and the roles of cult practice and death in a child''s existence. This delightful book illuminates what is most universal and specific about childhood in ancient Greece and examines childhood''s effects on Greek life and culture, the foundation on which Western civilization has been based.

Black Like Me

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Black Like Me
Studs Terkel tells us in his Foreword to the definitive Griffin Estate Edition of Black Like Me: "This is a contemporary book, you bet." Indeed, Black Like Me remains required reading in thousands of high schools and colleges for this very reason. Regardless of how much progress has been made in eliminating outright racism from American life, Black Like Me endures as a great human and humanitarian document. In our era, when "international" terrorism is most often defined in terms of a single ethnic designation and a single religion, we need to be reminded that America has been blinded by fear and racial intolerance before. As John Lennon wrote, "Living is easy with eyes closed." Black Like Me is the story of a man who opened his eyes, and helped an entire nation to do likewise.--Publisher information.
