War Year

release date: Dec 02, 2014
War Year
A tour of duty through the worst that the world has to offer Before his time as a professor of writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before penning multiple Nebula and Hugo Award–winning novels and stories, Joe Haldeman was a soldier in Vietnam, an experience that changed him and colored much of what he has written. War Year is Haldeman’s first novel and his first attempt to describe what he saw in Vietnam and give insight into what happened for the benefit of those who weren’t there. The minimalist War Year follows the life of John Farmer, a combat engineer, over the course of a year in Vietnam. John undergoes training, and then, along with his fellow soldiers, does whatever it takes to survive in unforgiving conditions. Powerful and affecting, War Year reaches its highest peaks as it describes with enduring truth the sights and experiences of what it was like to be in the humid jungles of Vietnam in 1968. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joe Haldeman including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

1968

release date: Dec 02, 2014
1968
“So many tensions and so much emotion . . . A powerful novel” of the Vietnam era by the award-winning author of The Forever War (Booklist). John “Spider” Spiedel is a college dropout who is drafted into the war as a combat engineer. Scared, he tries to keep his head down and stay safe, a plan that works until the Tet Offensive, when he is wounded and sent stateside—and receives a devastating diagnosis. And while he’s been away fighting, his girlfriend, Beverly, has fallen in with the hippie movement in an attempt to rebel against the repressive values of American society and the injustice of the war that took her boyfriend overseas. Vietnam was the conflict that changed America’s relationship with war forever, and this novel by Nebula and Hugo Award–winning author Joe Haldeman, inspired by his own experience in the military, is a look at this turbulent time in US history as seen through the eyes of the people most affected: the soldiers and their loved ones. 1968 is not just a story of two young people attempting to find themselves in a tumultuous world—it’s the account of a country trying to find itself as well. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joe Haldeman including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

Worlds Apart

release date: Dec 02, 2014
Worlds Apart
By the author of The Forever War: The classic Worlds trilogy continues as a survivor of a destructive conflict must work to prevent humanity’s extinction. The war that destroyed everything lasted a single day. After an initial nuclear strike, the Earth’s population was further devastated by an insidious bioweapon targeting anyone above the age of puberty. Now most of what’s left of human civilization gathers on New New York, one of the few orbiting Worlds that remain. Monitoring the Earth below from the floating habitat, Marianne O’Hara searches for signs of life—and, in particular, for Jeff Hawking, her former lover, who survived the viral nightmare thanks to a biological anomaly that rendered him immune. But Jeff is not the sole surviving adult in this landscape of death, ruin, and feral children, and those who fled to safety underground are being seduced by a terrible new religion preaching blood and vengeance. The last war, it seems, is not over—and the last hope for preventing the final holocaust may be Marianne O’Hara. The second enthralling volume in Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Joe Haldeman’s acclaimed Worlds trilogy, Worlds Apart is a thought-provoking tale of human frailty and lethal folly, and of the courage essential for the survival of the race. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joe Haldeman including rare images from the author’s personal collection

Infinite Dreams

release date: Dec 02, 2014
Infinite Dreams
Short stories, including a Hugo Award winner, from the author of The Forever War. Joe Haldeman burst onto the science fiction scene with The Forever War, an unforgettable novel that marked the arrival of an exciting, original new voice. Smart, creative, and acutely socially aware, Haldeman is an author whose work has all of the greatest qualities associated with the genre. Infinite Dreams collects Haldeman’s short stories from the early days of his career. There’s the poignant “26 Days, On Earth,” which follows a boy from the moon as he writes a journal about his time on Earth and falls for a local girl. Then there’s the humorous “All The Universe in a Mason Jar,” chronicling the experience aliens have with a moonshine-drunk farm boy. In the satirical “A Time to Live,” a frozen billionaire wakes up in the future, only to get returned to his own time in a different body. Also included is the Hugo Award–winning “Tricentennial,” about a trip to gather antimatter from a mysterious binary system. Haldeman’s whip-smart tales prove to be as much a treat now as they were when they were written. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joe Haldeman including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

All My Sins Remembered

release date: Dec 02, 2014
All My Sins Remembered
In this powerful, provocative SF classic from the award-winning author of The Forever War, a young man of peace is transformed into an intergalactic killer. Once Otto McGavin was a kind and gentle soul; then he was recruited by the all-powerful Confederación. An ultrasecretive, government-linked organization, the Confederación’s stated mission of protecting threatened life, both human and alien, throughout the galaxy greatly appeals to the Anglo-Buddhist McGavin as he eagerly prepares to embark on a career of diplomacy and selfless works. But Otto’s new masters have other plans for the idealistic young recruit. Through a process of immersion therapy and hypnosis, and by encasing him in temporary bodies of plastiflesh, scientists can overlay Otto’s true persona with other ones, transforming him completely—body, mind, and soul—into the ruthlessly effective prime operator the Confederación wants him to be. But decades of interstellar subterfuge and violence, and years spent wearing the personae of spies and cold-blooded killers, must ultimately take their toll—and before he leaves behind the lives that have been cruelly thrust upon him, Otto McGavin will have to somehow come to terms with who he really is and the monstrous things he has done. One of the most powerful and thought-provoking stories from the Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author of Worlds and The Forever War, Joe Haldeman’s All My Sins Remembered is a stunning work of speculative fiction. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joe Haldeman including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

Vietnam and Other Alien Worlds

release date: Dec 02, 2014
Vietnam and Other Alien Worlds
The author of The Forever War presents a collection of writings ranging from our past in Southeast Asia to our future among the stars. Nebula and Hugo Award–winning author Joe Haldeman burst onto the literary scene with the hugely popular novel The Forever War, but his career also took off on the strength of his short fiction. This brilliant collection brings together examples of his science fiction as well as his writing on Vietnam—and reveals the inexorable connections between the two. The works included in Vietnam and Other Alien Worlds are united by its title essay, in which Haldeman explains how his past informs his envisioned futures. One of these futures is a grouping of four stories from the Confederación universe, which includes his novels All My Sins Remembered and There Is No Darkness. An anthropological expedition goes awry as a research team’s subjects become murderous, and trade negotiations fall apart, comically lost in translation. The collection closes with one of Haldeman’s most affective works about Vietnam—the moving narrative poem “DX.” Vietnam and Other Alien Worlds proves to be an anthology as versatile and multifaceted as the author who wrote it. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joe Haldeman including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

Cold Calling Early Customers
"I''m a timid engineer by training, so I was skeptical that I''d ever beinterested in a book about cold calling, but Robert''s book is amazing. It turns a smarmy field that I''d hate to enter into an analyticalapproach to getting customer leads while simultaneously creatingactual value for the people you''re talking to. I was particularlyinterested by his suggestion to pre-validate the market for a newproduct by cold-calling prospects, interviewing them for a writeup onyour industry blog, and doing market research in the context of theinterview. That''s brilliant: it provides easy and obvious value forthe guy on the other end of the phone while also getting you theirundivided attention to discover how their life sucks and how you cancreate a product to make it better. Every business selling tobusinesses can learn something from this book."- Patrick McKenzie, Kalzumeus Software"Robert has ventured into (and conquered) an arena where few startup founders are willing to tread...cold calling. I''ve recommended this ebook to numerous colleagues looking for concrete advice on how to validate, launch or grow their startup over the telephone."- Rob Walling, Author of Start Small Stay Small: A Developer''s Guide to Launching a Startup

War Stories

release date: Nov 01, 2005
War Stories
Hugo and Nebula Award winner Joe Haldeman is one of the most compelling writers to emerge from the Vietnam War. War Stories collects together two novels, several short stories, and two long poems that deal explicitly with Haldeman’s Vietnam and post-Vietnam experiences. The novel War Year was one of the first books written by Haldeman upon his return from Vietnam, and the novel 1968 (which chronicles time in country, as well as a soldiers return “home”) was not published until 1994. These two novels form compelling bookends to a career’s worth of writing that has been passionately engaged with the questions raised by the Vietnam War. War Stories includes the Forever War novella, “A Separate War,” as well as three new author introductions which give some historical, personal, and bibliographic background to the fiction herein. The novels and stories in this book have never been as potent, nor as terribly relevant as they are today.
