The Rise and Fall of Poetry

release date: Jul 23, 2024
The Rise and Fall of Poetry
If you''re looking for an informed, scholarly discussion of poetry, don''t buy this book. Jim Nelson is literally an amateur. He loves poetry and he shares his opinions, oblivious of their validity. Jim is what you might call an eclectic writer, or more accurately, one unable to focus his attention. He has written two novels followed by a book on insects and now here comes a book on poetry. No telling what his next masterpiece might be. (He insisted on us using the adjective "masterpiece." Since he paid to have this book printed, who are we to argue?) Jim has the temerity to suggest that the great Walt Whitman is not a poet. Ditto, Carl Sandburg, William Carlos Williams and the majority of contemporary poets. At the same time, he admits to greatly admiring these and other "non-poets." As an excuse for "having his cake and eating it too," he takes refuge in Emerson''s reassuring safety net: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." There''s a "freebie" in this book: a second book! Jim shamelessly slipped in quite a few of his own poems at the back, just when you thought the book was finished. If you''d rather not read poems about cockroaches or a python, at least you might enjoy a few pretty pictures.

Ten Insects That Changed the World

release date: May 26, 2024
Ten Insects That Changed the World
Did you know that the mosquito played an important role in the Louisiana Purchase? Or that dung beetles saved the cattle industry in Australia? That honeybees pollinate about one third of the food we eat? Or that the deadliest animal on earth is an insect? There’s an ant colony some 3,700 miles long! Morgan’s sphinx moth has a tongue more than 13 inches long. A locust plague stopped trains as the tracks became slippery with their crushed bodies. There’s a grasshopper in Africa that eats mice. Jim Nelson’s latest book is a treasure house of fascinating facts, stunning photographs and shocking historical events. One moment you might cringe reading about billions of locusts descending on farmland. The next you may laugh out loud at anecdotes and original poetry. Read about the wasp that turns a cockroach into a zombie or the historic 2024 hatch of a trillion cicadas. Trivia buffs will love the “Insect Book of Records” and chefs can add several insect recipes to their repertoire.

Trygve Lindstrom

release date: Apr 17, 2024
Trygve Lindstrom
Libby, the “City of Eagles.” A town in extreme northwest Montana surrounded by more than two million acres of wilderness. It lies along the turquoise waters of the Kootenai River surrounded by pristine streams and lakes. When Doc Conrad Lindstrom brings his family to Libby, the lumber mill and the vermiculite mine are thriving industries. His wife Anna plays the small pump organ at church. His older son, Nicholas, builds model ships and makes his own exquisite fishing flies. Younger son, Trygve, debates his future: he’s struggling to decide: poet laureate, or maybe an entomologist. At age six, Tryg races into the family cabin, pursued by a horde of angry wasps. His mother screams. Sherlock, the family basset howls and hides under the bed. Conrad starts swinging a broom. Chaos reigns. Or as Conrad says, “Just a typical Saturday night.” Tryg age 10, catches (and loses) a monster brown trout on the Madison River. He goes on his first (and last) elk hunt at age 12 and officially becomes a man after completing Libby’s unique rite of passage. At 18 he and best friend Otto challenge Jennings Rapids in the family’s tiny 12-foot boat. Meet a few of Libby’s “dear hearts and gentle people” in Trygve Lindstrom: Tales from Libby, Montana.

And maybe, land that is hiding a secret elixir, the Fountain of Youth. Harvard entomologist, Trygve Lindstrom, has accepted Morton’s generous six-month sabbatical to a remote village in Madagascar. For centuries, mariner’s reports and missionary accounts claim that these reclusive villagers, the Rock People, may have found the secret to youth and longevity. Lindstrom scoffs at the tales, but leaps at a chance to collect and study rare bugs. In time, he is accepted by the villagers, especially the children who joyfully accompany him on his collecting journeys. Then the unthinkable happens. Morton sends two armed commandoes to Madagascar. The Book
Its in the book. Jim Nelson Did you know? Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades - King David, Clubs - Alexander the Great, Hearts - Charlemagne, and Diamonds - Julius Caesar. "When possums are playingpossium, they are not playing. They actually pass out from sheer terror. "In the 1940s, the FCC assigned televisions channel 1 to mobile services, two-way radios in taxicabs, etc. They never did assign any other channels. Thats why our TVs today start with channel 2. "Hersheys Kisses are called that because the machine that makes them looks like its kissing the conveyor belt. "The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the days when horses pulled the fire engines. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight stairways. "The only two days of the year that do not have any professional sports games, MLB, NBA, NHL, or the NFL are the day before and the day after the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Freefall of the American University

release date: Dec 03, 2012
Freefall of the American University
It''s happening in colleges all across the country. Instead of being educational institutions designed to encourage the free discussion of ideas, universities have become prisons of propaganda, indoctrinating students with politically correct (and often morally repugnant) ideas about American life and culture. This book exposes the liberal bias in today''s universities, providing hard evidence, in clear and unimpeachable terms, that shows how today''s colleges are covertly and overtly proselytizing with leftist slants on sexuality, politics, and lifestyles. By naming names and providing specific and credible insights from faculty members, administrators, professional observers, and analysts who have witnessed and chronicled the intellectual and ethical collapse taking place within the academy, this book offers a broad overview of the issues, the history of the problems, analysis from a broad range of academics and professionals, and also observations of the university students themselves, in their own words, from schools all across the nation.
