In this thesis, we explore the problem of training end-to-end neural network models for automatic speech recognition (ASR) when limited training data are available. End-to-end models are theoretically well-suited to low-resource languages because they do not rely on expert linguistic resources, but they are difficult to train without large amounts of transcribed speech. This amount of training data is prohibitively expensive to acquire in most of the world’s languages. We present several methods for improving end-to-end neural network-based ASR in low-resource scenarios. First, we explore two methods for creating a shared embedding space for speech and text. In doing so, we learn representations of speech that contain only linguistic content and not, for example, the speaker or noise characteristics in the speech signal. These linguistic-only representations allow the ASR model to generalize better to unseen speech by discouraging the model from learning spurious correlations between the text transcripts and extra-linguistic factors in speech. This shared embedding space also enables semi-supervised training of some parameters of the ASR model with additional text. Next, we experiment with two techniques for probabilistically segmenting text into subword units during training. We introduce the n-gram maximum likelihood loss, which allows the ASR model to learn an inventory of acoustically-inspired subword units as part of the training process. We show that this technique combines well with the embedding space alignment techniques in the previous section, leading to a 44% relative improvement in word error rate in the lowest resource condition tested.

This qualitative study fills a void in the research on collegiate student government elections by examining the experiences of 10 candidates for president and vice president at large, public, four-year universities in Texas. Participation in student government has been shown to support students'' learning and lead to future political engagement. However, until this study, little has been understood about the experiences of candidates in the student government elections process. Using political efficacy (Campbell et al., 1954) as a theoretical framework for the coding and analysis of the data, several themes emerged, including the students'' motivations for running for president or vice president, the nature of the campaigning process, lessons learned throughout the election, and the candidates'' perceptions of future political participation. Each of the participants perceived their experience as a candidate in student government elections to be a valuable learning experience, which helped them gain an understanding of how politics works and their valued role in the American democracy. However, the campaigning process brought many challenges including feelings of vulnerability from public scrutiny, which had a physical and emotional toll on the participants. Overall, their candidacy influenced their perceptions of political efficacy and inspired their continued involvement in politics, whether highly engaged or more pragmatic. Implications for practice include the need for student affairs practitioners to offer guidance and resources for candidates to provide them the support needed to meet the challenges of the election. In addition, the creation of an ombudsman position to oversee campaign behavior would be helpful to ensure the integrity of the election. In regard to theory, this is the first known study to apply the theory of political efficacy to student government elections at the university-level. Through adapting the assumptions of the theory to match the student government realm, political efficacy was able to help explain why students may choose to run for student leadership positions and how they perceive the power of their student government organization.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems have become hugely successful in recent years - we have become accustomed to speech interfaces across all kinds of devices. However, despite the huge impact ASR has had on the way we interact with technology, it is out of reach for a significant portion of the world''s population. This is because these systems rely on a variety of manually-generated resources - like transcripts and pronunciation dictionaries - that can be both expensive and difficult to acquire. In this thesis, we explore techniques for learning about speech directly from speech, with no manually generated transcriptions. Such techniques have the potential to revolutionize speech technologies for the vast majority of the world''s population. The cognitive science and computer science communities have both been investing increasing time and resources into exploring this problem. However, a full unsupervised speech recognition system is a hugely complicated undertaking and is still a long ways away. As in previous work, we focus on the lower-level tasks which will underlie an eventual unsupervised speech recognizer. We specifically focus on two tasks: developing linguistically meaningful representations of speech and segmenting speech into phonetic units. This thesis approaches these tasks from a new direction: deep learning. While modern deep learning methods have their roots in ideas from the 1960s and even earlier, deep learning techniques have recently seen a resurgence, thanks to huge increases in computational power and new efficient learning algorithms. Deep learning algorithms have been instrumental in the recent progress of traditional supervised speech recognition; here, we extend that work to unsupervised learning from speech.
