Literární dráhu zahájil jako autor a spoluautor sci-fi povídek, ale proslavil se cyklem románů o sériovém vrahovi Dexteru Morganovi, který zabíjí jen zlé lidi. Všech osm svazků již vyšlo česky, naposledy Dexter je mrtvý. Na motivy Lindsayho knižního cyklu natočila televizní stanice Showtime osm řad seriálu Dexter. Autorovou románovou prvotinou však byla v roce 1994 detektivka Tropická deprese. Po dokončení série o Dexterovi se rozhodl k psaní příběhů o Billym Knightovi vrátit knihou Rudý příliv.
