Ethics and the Good Soldier

release date: Nov 01, 2023
Ethics and the Good Soldier
Building on extensive, internationally leading empirical research conducted by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, this book explores the soldier as a virtuous professional through a close examination of soldiers’ character and ethical reasoning. Starting from the view that virtues such as courage, honesty, loyalty and integrity are core to being a professional soldier, the book draws on insights from British soldiers at three stages of their career – officer cadets (at Sandhurst), junior lieutenants/captains (attending the Junior Officer Tactical Awareness Course), and senior captains (participating in the Captain’s Warfare Course). Drawing upon the Jubilee Centre’s Soldiers of Character study, the book explores soldiers’ character in the professional domain. Including clear implications for practice and research, this is essential reading for all those interested in the character of soldiers in both a professional and academic setting.

Jewish Theology Unbound

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Jewish Theology Unbound
Jewish Theology Unbound challenges the widespread misinterpretation of Judaism as a religion of law as opposed to theology. James A. Diamond provides close readings of the Bible, classical rabbinic texts, Jewish philosophers, and mystics from the ancient, medieval, and modern period, which communicate a profound Jewish philosophical theology on human nature, God, and the relationship between the two. The study begins with an examination of questioning in the Hebrew Bible, demonstrating that what the Bible encourages is independent philosophical inquiry into how to situate oneself in the world ethically, spiritually, and teleologically. It explores such themes as the nature of God through the various names by which God is known in the Jewish intellectual tradition, love of others and of God, death, martyrdom, freedom, angels, the philosophical quest, the Holocaust, and the state of Israel, all in light of the Hebrew Bible and the way it is filtered through the rabbinic, philosophical, and mystical traditions.

Subject Mentoring in the Secondary School

release date: Nov 01, 2002
Subject Mentoring in the Secondary School
Student teachers have always worked with professionals during their teaching practice, but as teacher training becomes more school based, the role of the mentor has become much more important. Even newer is the emergence of the subject mentor. This book is an examination of the nature of effective mentoring and its contribution to student teacher development. Part One of the book has a broad perspective and looks at policy developments and the differing approaches to teacher education. Part Two explores central issues which have emerged in the author''s research with mentors. It identifies tendencies in subject mentoring which characterise the work of subject mentors in schools, and key aspects of mentoring are examined, such as collaborative teaching, observation and the practice of discursive mentoring.

Simple Algebras, Base Change, and the Advanced Theory of the Trace Formula. (AM-120), Volume 120

release date: Mar 02, 2016
Simple Algebras, Base Change, and the Advanced Theory of the Trace Formula. (AM-120), Volume 120
A general principle, discovered by Robert Langlands and named by him the "functoriality principle," predicts relations between automorphic forms on arithmetic subgroups of different reductive groups. Langlands functoriality relates the eigenvalues of Hecke operators acting on the automorphic forms on two groups (or the local factors of the "automorphic representations" generated by them). In the few instances where such relations have been probed, they have led to deep arithmetic consequences. This book studies one of the simplest general problems in the theory, that of relating automorphic forms on arithmetic subgroups of GL(n,E) and GL(n,F) when E/F is a cyclic extension of number fields. (This is known as the base change problem for GL(n).) The problem is attacked and solved by means of the trace formula. The book relies on deep and technical results obtained by several authors during the last twenty years. It could not serve as an introduction to them, but, by giving complete references to the published literature, the authors have made the work useful to a reader who does not know all the aspects of the theory of automorphic forms.

Soil and Water Conservation

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Soil and Water Conservation
Written from an agronomic rather than an engineering perspective, this introduction to soil and water conservation explores a full range of topics and environmental issues, including some ignored or overlooked in other books on the subject. Comprehensive, up-to-date, and accessible, it considers the hazards posed by erosion, sedimentation, and pollution, and describes the techniques needed to conserve soil and maintain environmental quality. Situations and examples are drawn from many places to represent a cross-section of the soils, climates and cultures of the world, as well as the full scope of agricultural, engineering, mining, and other uses of the land. The volume covers conserving soil and water, soil erosion and civilization, geologic erosion and sedimentation, water erosion and sedimentation, wind erosion and deposition, predicting soil loss, soil surveys as a basis for land use planning, cropping systems, tillage practices for conservation, conservation structures, vegetating drastically disturbed areas, pastureland, rangeland, and forestland management, water conservation, soil drainage, irrigation and reclamation, soil pollution, water quality and pollution, economics of soil and water conservation, soil and water conservation agencies in the United States, and soil and water conservation around the world. Philosophies of Catholic Education

release date: May 31, 2024
Philosophies of Catholic Education
This seminal volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to presenting an authoritative account of contemporary philosophies of Catholic education, intersecting the substantive boundaries of education, religious studies, philosophy, and theology to ultimately re-examine these philosophies and reinvigorate the authentic aspects of the Catholic educational endeavour. Against the backdrop of an increasingly volatile debate between liberal and conservative values within Catholic educational and theological settings, chapters provide a thorough and judicious blending of historical accuracy with contemporary urgency. Combining a diversity of knowledge and historical account – including discussion on Thomism, Christian existentialism, and ideologically oppositional philosophies – the book argues that philosophies of Catholic education are in a new process of evolution necessary in order to justify the aims and priorities of Catholic education. This book will be of value to academics, scholars, teachers, and researchers with an interest in Roman Catholicism and the philosophy of education. Those more broadly interested in exploring the intersection between education, philosophy, and religion will also find the volume of use. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
