Professor of dramatic literature at Columbia University from 1892 to 1924, scholar, critic, essayist, playwright, and fiction writer, Brander Matthews (1852-1929) was one of the most prominent and influential American "culture brokers" during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book, the first full-length study of his career, explores the literary politics through which Matthews--often in league with his lifelong friend and ally, Theodore Roosevelt--worked to promote literary and cultural "progressivism" within and beyond the scholarly community. This study also reveals how Matthews, long ignored by scholars of American literary and cultural history, fell into undeserved oblivion. From 1880 to 1920, Matthews wielded enormous power from within the center of the New York literary establishment. Publisher''s advisor, New York Times book reviewer, and MLS president, he counted W.D. Howells, Mark Twain, and James Weldon Johnson among his intimate friends. Later Matthews was attacked by the Young Intellectuals as a representative "genteel"--Despite such un-"genteel" behavior as championing Twain and literary realism, denouncing provincialism, and fighting to establish American literature in the academy. Matthews'' "progressive" responses to such issues as the "Negro problem" and the "woman question" reveal an ideological conservatism. His career is a vivid reminder that academe was as "political" in 1890 as in 1990.

Oppression is often mentioned in multicultural literature as a cognate to racial identity development and multicultural competence. However, to this point, no studies have empirically examined the oppression construct in terms of relevant characteristics, processes, or relationships to other multicultural constructs. Background. The purpose of this study is the evaluation and follow-up of the left ventricular function in patients with Chronic Aortic Regurgitation in all degrees of its severity, utilizing a current available echocardiographic technique consisting in Doppler color flow mapping continuous and pulsed ware Doppler and basic 2-D echocardiography. Patients with Chronic Aortic Regurgitation were selected, with a minimum of 6 months of follow-up, in order to avoid those patients with Acute Aortic Regurgitation.

While the politics of the institutional location and physical environment of the writing center is not a new issue, the majority of this scholarship does not adequately consider tutors'' and tutees'' perceptions regarding these issues. The purpose of this study, then, was to understand if and how the institutional location and/or physical environment within a writing center affects the tutors'' and tutees'' perception of the writing center and/or affects the dynamic of a peer tutoring session. Given the low number of participants involved, the results do not provide sufficient evidence to make specific claims regarding research questions contained herein; however, the results do have implications for future research on the institutional location and/or physical environment of the writing center.

Substance-use disorders (SUDs) are a significant societal burden. Like many other conditions, SUDs are characterized by chronic relapse after periods without symptoms. Alterations in synaptic plasticity have been documented after acute and addiction-related behavioral exposures to drugs of abuse. These synaptic alterations are persistent and similar to the chronic relapse state of patients with SUDs, suggesting that reversing these synaptic alterations may prevent relapse. Additionally, many of these synaptic features of addiction mirror those found in other forms of learning and memory. These features suggest that the etiology of this disorder stems from persistent modifications in corticolimbic synaptic plasticity mediated by drug-induced alterations in addiction-related gene (ARG) expression. Understanding the regulation of addiction-related genes and their impact on synaptic plasticity and behavior may inform new pharmacological treatments that reverse these aberrant drug-evoked forms of plasticity in favor of remission.
