The World's Worst Bet

release date: Sep 09, 2025
The World's Worst Bet
“A singularly—thrillingly—persuasive chronicle of globalization’s spectacular rise and fall.” ―Evan Osnos, National Book Award–winning author of Age of Ambition The triumphant globalization that began in the 1990s has given way to a world riven by conflict, populism, and economic nationalism. In The World’s Worst Bet, David J. Lynch offers a trenchant, fast-paced narrative of the rise and fall of the greatest engine of prosperity the world has ever known. Lynch explains what went right, what went wrong, and what needs to change to preserve the benefits of global integration and to build prosperity for all Americans. Lynch brings a deep understanding of the forces affecting Americans’ lives to his portrayal of a fascinating cast of characters: presidents and policymakers; factory workers whose anger over lost jobs reshaped a nation’s politics; and the anti-globalization warriors of the right and left. Their stories show how the United States made a bad bet on globalization, gambling that it could enjoy its benefits while ignoring its costs: dislocated workers, vulnerable supply chains, and the rise of a powerful rival. With trillions of dollars now at stake, The World’s Worst Bet explains the failings of the past and offers an insightful guide to the opportunities of the future.

Permutation Statistical Methods for Criminology and Criminal Justice

release date: Aug 11, 2025
Permutation Statistical Methods for Criminology and Criminal Justice
This book takes a unique approach to explaining permutation statistical methods for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, researchers, and other professionals interested in the areas of criminology or criminal justice. The book integrates permutation statistical methods with a wide range of classical statistical methods. It opens with a comparison of two models of statistical inference: the classical population model espoused by J. Neyman and E. Pearson and the permutation model first introduced by R.A. Fisher and E.J.G. Pitman. Numerous comparisons of permutation and classical statistical methods are illustrated with examples from criminology and criminal justice and supplemented with a variety of R scripts for ease of computation. The text follows the general outline of an introductory textbook in statistics with chapters on central tendency, variability, one-sample tests, two-sample tests, matched-pairs tests, completely-randomized analysis of variance, randomized-blocks analysis of variance, simple linear regression and correlation, and the analysis of goodness of fit and contingency. Unlike classical statistical methods, permutation statistical methods do not rely on theoretical distributions, avoid the usual assumptions of normality and homogeneity, depend solely on the observed data, and do not require random sampling, making permutation statistical methods ideal for analyzing criminology and criminal justice databases. Permutation methods are relatively new in that it took modern computing power to make them available to those working in criminology and criminal justice research. The book contains detailed examples of permutation analyses. Each analysis is paired with a conventional analysis; for example, a permutation test of the difference between experimental and control groups is contrasted with Student''s two-sample $t$ test. An added feature is the inclusion of multiple historical notes on the origin and development of both parametric and conventional tests and measures. Designed for an audience with a basic statistical background and a strong interest in parametric and non-parametric statistics, the book can easily serve as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in criminology, criminal justice, or sociology, as well as serving as a research source for faculty, researchers, and other professionals in the area of criminology. No statistical training beyond a first course in statistics is required, but some knowledge of, or interest in, criminology or criminal justice is assumed.

A Field Guide to the Connecticut River

release date: Apr 02, 2024
A Field Guide to the Connecticut River
The first comprehensive natural history guide to the Connecticut River and its environs, with more than 750 illustrations The Connecticut River, New England''s longest and most historic river, originates in northern New Hampshire and wends more than four hundred miles to Long Island Sound. This indispensable guide not only brings the Connecticut River''s ecology and pivotal role in American history to life but instills a deeper appreciation for the river''s diverse and abundant beauty.

Applying Benford's Law for Assessing the Validity of Social Science Data

release date: Nov 23, 2023
Applying Benford's Law for Assessing the Validity of Social Science Data
Benford''s Law is a probability distribution for the likelihood of the leading digit in a set of numbers. This book seeks to improve and systematize the use of Benford''s Law in the social sciences to assess the validity of self-reported data. The authors first introduce a new measure of conformity to the Benford distribution that is created using permutation statistical methods and employs the concept of statistical agreement. In a switch from a typical Benford application, this book moves away from using Benford''s Law to test whether the data conform to the Benford distribution, to using it to draw conclusions about the validity of the data. The concept of ''Benford validity'' is developed, which indicates whether a dataset is valid based on comparisons with the Benford distribution and, in relation to this, diagnostic procedure that assesses the impact of not having Benford validity on data analysis is devised.

First Isaiah and the Disappearance of the Gods

release date: May 10, 2021
First Isaiah and the Disappearance of the Gods
Isaiah 1–39 uses the unique term אלילים—usually translated as “idols”— more than anywhere else in the Hebrew Bible. Using this linguistic phenomenon as a point of departure, Matthew J. Lynch reexamines the rhetorical strategies of First Isaiah, revealing a stronger monotheizing rhetoric than previously recognized. Standard accounts of Israelite religion frequently insist that monotheism reached its apex during the exile, and especially in Deutero-Isaiah. By contrast, Lynch’s study brings to light an equally potent mode of monotheizing in First Isaiah. Lynch identifies three related rhetorical tendencies that emphasize yhwh’s supreme uniqueness: a rhetoric of avoidance, referring to other deities as idols (אלילים) to avoid conferring on them the status of gods (אלוהים); a rhetoric of exaltation, emphasizing yhwh’s truly exalted status in opposition to all that which exalted itself; and a rhetoric of abasement, fully subjugating all other claimants to absolute power—whether human or divine—before the divine king. Succinctly and persuasively argued, Lynch’s book will change how biblical scholars understand the nature and development of Israelite monotheism.

John Davenant's Hypothetical Universalism

release date: Jan 01, 2021
John Davenant's Hypothetical Universalism
Michael Lynch argues that the hypothetical universalism of the English theologian and bishop John Davenant (1572-1641) has consistently been misinterpreted and misrepresented as a via media between Arminian and Reformed theology. This book examines Davenant''s hypothetical universalism in the context of early modern Reformed orthodoxy. It traces how Davenant and his fellow British delegates at the Synod of Dordt shaped the Canons of Dordt in such a way as to allow for their English hypothetical universalism. A careful exposition of the theses found in Davenant''s De Morte Christi makes up the central core of this study.

Portraying Violence in the Hebrew Bible

release date: Apr 30, 2020
Portraying Violence in the Hebrew Bible
Most studies on violence in the Hebrew Bible focus on the question of how modern readers should approach the problem. But they fail to ask how the Hebrew Bible thinks about that problem in the first place. In this work, Matthew J. Lynch examines four key ways that writers of the Hebrew Bible conceptualize and critique acts of violence: violence as an ecological problem; violence as a moral problem; violence as a judicial problem; violence as a purity problem. These four ''grammars of violence'' help us interpret crucial biblical texts where violence plays a lead role, like Genesis 4-9. Lynch''s volume also offers readers ways to examine cultural continuity and the distinctiveness of biblical conceptions of violence.

Arab Conquests and Early Islamic Historiography

release date: Nov 14, 2019
Arab Conquests and Early Islamic Historiography
Winner of the 2021 Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society Book Prize Of the available sources for Islamic history between the seventh and eighth centuries CE, few are of greater importance than al-Baladhuri''s Kitab Futuh al-buldan (The Book of the Conquest of Lands). Written in Arabic by a ninth-century Muslim scholar working at the court of the ''Abbasid caliphs, the Futuh''s content covers many important matters at the beginning of Islamic history. It informs its audience of the major events of the early Islamic conquests, the settlement of Muslims in the conquered territories and their experiences therein, and the origins and development of the early Islamic state. Questions over the text''s construction, purpose, and reception, however, have largely been ignored in current scholarship. This is despite both the text''s important historical material and its crucial early date of creation. It has become commonplace for researchers to turn to the Futuh for information on a specific location or topic, but to ignore the grander – and, in many ways, more straightforward – questions over the text''s creation and limitations. This book looks to correct these gaps in knowledge by investigating the context, form, construction, content, and early reception history of al-Baladhuri''s text.

Exploring Green Criminology

release date: Apr 22, 2016
Exploring Green Criminology
Few criminologists have drawn attention to the fact that widespread and significant forms of harm such as green or environmental crimes are neglected by criminology. Others have suggested that green crimes present the most important challenge to criminology as a discipline. This book argues that criminology needs to take green harms more seriously and to be revolutionized so that it forms part of the solution to the large environmental problems currently faced across the world. It asks how criminology should be redesigned to consider green/environmental harm as a key area of study in an era where destruction of the earth and the world’s ecosystem is a major concern and examines why this has remained unaccomplished so far. The chapters in this book apply an environmental frame of reference underlying a green approach to issues which can be addressed from within criminology and which can encourage criminologists and environmentalists to respond and react differently to environmental crime.

Eddie
Eddie Haskell was the bad kid who never went away. When child actor Ken Osmond stepped onto the set of Leave it to Beaver in 1957, he not only entered our living rooms, he homesteaded a permanant place in American pop culture. The poster child for sneaky, rotten kids everywhere, he was the reference point for cautious mothers to warn their children about. And every one in America knew an Eddie Haskell at some point in his or her life. The amazing phenomenon of Ken Osmond''s character is still going strong, over half a century after the show''s cancellation. Even today, the name Eddie Haskell remains firmly entrenched in the American lexicon. Political foes from both sides of the ideological spectrum love to accuse their opponents of ''acting like Eddie Haskell, '' and when Kobe Bryant argues a referee''s call, tweets go out labeling him and ''Eddie Haskell''. Psychology Today Magazine has published articles about recognizing and treatin the ''Eddie Haskell Syndrome'' and Matt Groening created Bart Simpson as his own version of the ''son of Eddie Haskell.'' Now it''s time to meet Ken Osmond, the man behind America''s preeminent bad boy. A man who, as co-star Jerry Mathers said, ''Was the best actor on the program, because he was so diametrically opposed to the character he played.'' A devoted husband, father, and patriot, he''s a man who''s been forever shadowed by Eddie Haskell, but whose own life, was even more amazing than the character he portrayed (from Amazon website)

The Tribulation Hand-Book
This Book is aimed at the people who will occupy the earth after people like me are raptured out of the earth into the presence of the Living God, Jesus Christ. You have left here with the Antichrist and his false prophet and the devil, who was kicked out of second heaven at the time we went up to meet our maker. Also the Holy Spirit was taken of the earth with us, that leaves you at the mercy of the Antichrist, who is raised back from the dead after being shot in the head. You will be forced to worship an image of the Antichrist or die. Who wants to worship a cartoon? There is still time while you are physically alive to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior (from your sins) and as your Lord God. You must understand that you are a sinner and need the forgiveness of God in order to have a relationship with him. In a way, you have more physical evidence that there is a God than the people that have been taken off the earth. You have seen him come for his church of believers at the rapture of the church of believers. You have seen him. You know he is real; thats more than the people that have been taken off the earth had. They had to believe in him by faith, but faith in God is what you did not have. Thats why you were left were you are. The reason you did not have any faith in God is that you have pride in the false religion that you could not be moved from by the people that have preached Jesus Christ to you. Read on. Now you must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ with your whole being because you are going to have to die for himbetter to die for Jesus Christ than to live for the devil.
